Review by Fo PAUL SHAPIRO: Essen Tzadik, 2008 Vintage "borscht belt" Jewish comedy meets a jumping brew of hot jazz, wailing klezmer, and down 'n' dirty blues. Reviving swing-era novelties from hipsters like Slim Gaillard and Cab Calloway, the band cuts loose in madcap abandon. Vocalist Babi Floyd goes miles over the top in #3, while counterpart Cilla Owens adds equal measures of class and sass to the bluesy numbers. Great fun, especially #1 and 8. The sun still shines on the Lucksmiths . And they're working on their muscles. Three years after their last album, the story-filled Warmer Corners , and just a year after odds-and-ends compilation Spring a Leak , the modestly cult-adored Australian indie-poppers are set to return with their ninth proper full-length, First Frost . The new album's "A Sobering Thought (Just When One Was Needed)" shows how time has changed the long-running trio (plus Mid-State Orange's Louis Richter on lead guitar), as well as how-- happily-- it hasn't. Longtime listeners will note how the Lucksmiths' familiar jangle has given way to glam-Rock Boogie, punchy horns, a smattering of piano, and a Thin Lizzy-esque guitar solo (sobering thought indeed!) on this new song, but that's all territory already made safe by Scottish contemporaries Belle and Sebastian, to wonderful effect, on The Life Pursuit . Singer and stand-up drummer Tali White is still punning elegantly, dropping words like "demimonde" as he croons about beautiful breezes, swimming pools, and beer. "When we fled from the scene/ Drunk and giddy with chlorine/ God, I almost felt 15/ Slinking down the street at night," White reminisces, joined by backing harmonies. It's all a fitting maturation for a band that once sang of "T-Shirt Weather" and "Happy Secret"s. And it keeps going for another minute more. Lucinda Williams asks in "Little Rock Star," a cautionary song swathed in guitar noise that someone should instant-message to Pete Doherty, Ryan Adams and Amy Winehouse. While it shows that the 55-year-old barbed-wire country singer is wary of Rock's trappings, Little Honey proves she's still crushed out on the music. The good news is that AC/DC has finally booked a Tampa gig on their upcoming world tour. (It's Dec. 21 at the St. Pete Times Forum. The better news? Chances are that no matter how good or bad their new album Black Ice is, the concert will basically be a greatest-hits show. Word out there on the fan blogs is that concertgoers should expect one or two new songs and then a slew of the classics. Even in the MP3 age, there are CDs worth searching out—and that require the search. "O.O.P., We Did It Again" is dedicated to great albums that are criminally out of print, and that aren't necessarily likely to become available anytime soon. The album: This Is... Huey "Piano" Smith (1998), one of a handful of superb early-Rock compilations brought to us by the fondly remembered, albeit short-lived, reissue label Music Club. Classic material: Huey "Piano" Smith wasn't a singer, but a session player and bandleader with just about the strongest reputation on his instrument in New Orleans—which is saying a lot, given the number of piano prodigies from that city. The Clowns were a vocal group led by a drag queen named Bobby Marchan. Together they created a small but potent body of work, and Music Club chose 18 tracks for this reissue; it also delivered smart best-ofs on the Everly Brothers, Lee Dorsey, Freddy Fender, Los Van Van, Augustus Pablo, King Tubby, and Del Shannon, as well as a number of excellent African collections. Highlights: "Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu" is, of course, one of the all-time classic New Orleans Rock and roll records: a number of the tracks here, such as "Little Chickie Wah Wah," basically rewrite it. "Don't You Just Know It" is famous to younger folks for its appearance in Snatch . But the one that owns my heart is "Little Liza Jane," one of the hardest-rocking songs ever recorded. Why it's ...
