LEROY Residents in the community of LeRoy have been advised to Boil Water used for drinking and cooking. The advisory was issued by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources late last week after a second Water sample drawn from the municipal well indicated the presence of coliform and E. coli bacteria, said DNR Water supply engineer David Barkhahn. No illnesses have been reported. The cause of the problem could be an illegal connection in the system known as a cross connection or some type of breach in the elevated storage tank, said Barkhahn, who ruled out groundwater contamination from area farms. The Water in our well has always been safe. Barkhahn said municipal employees drew a sample from the 1,099-foot deep well on July 14 that detected coliform bacteria. Three subsequent samples drawn by staff were safe. However, a sample drawn on July 30 tested positive for both coliform and E. coli bacteria. Since this was the second sample in one month that was positive for coliform bacteria, it was considered a violation, Barkhahn said. A Boil Water advisory was issued for residents living in the 130 homes served by the LeRoy Sanitary District on July 31. Barkhahn said the advisory will continue until two rounds of safe Water samples are reported. We expect to hear the results of the Tuesday samples this Thursday, said Barkhahn.
