EgyptAir and Turkey's Pegasus Airlines are buying 15 new jetliners from Boeing in transactions announced today. EgyptAir has ordered two Boeing 777-300ER long-range twin-engine Jets worth $529 million at book prices. The airline is to receive the first of the new planes in 2010, Boeing said. Meanwhile, Pegasus Airlines, a low-cost airline in Turkey, announced it will double a previous order for Boeing 737-800 jetliners. The airline had ordered 12 of the twin-engine, mid-range Jets from Boeing in 2005. It now says it wants to buy 12 more. The two dozen new planes will make Pegasus the biggest private airline Boeing customer in Turkey. ... Source: www.enn.com --- 18 days ago

New airline V Australia cancels some flights because it doesn't expect to get the Jets it had ordered any time soon. Layoffs loom at local aircraft parts suppliers that aren't receiving new orders. A strike by Boeing Co. factory workers in the Seattle area has begun to hit Southern California travelers and local aerospace companies as the walkout has left at least one airline without the new planes it needs and aircraft parts makers facing layoffs. ... The Boeing Co. and its striking machinists union have agreed to return to the bargaining table. Both sides said Wednesday night that a federal mediator will help hammer out details of the resumed negotiations. Union members walked out Sept. 6 in a contract dispute. "We've been keeping the lines of communication open since the strike, and we've agreed to pursue additional talks through a federal mediator," company spokesman Tim Healy said. "We're interested in exploring whether there's a path forward to resolve the strike." The International Association of Machinists, which represents about 27,000 workers in Washington, Oregon and Kansas, walked out after rejecting a contract offer over concerns about job security, pay, health care and retirement benefits. The electricians, mechanics, painters and other hourly workers represented by the union assemble Boeing commercial Jets. "We hope this meeting marks a major step forward," the union said in a statement to its members. It urged them to "stay strong on the picket lines. That's how we're going to secure a contract that will settle this strike." On Monday, an analyst said the strike is expected to cost Boeing about 21 aircraft deliveries and up to 15 cents per share in earnings for every two weeks it continues. Boeing reported last week that deliveries are way off, largely due to the strike. The company delivered 84 737s, 747s, 767s and 777s in the third quarter, down from a pre-stri ... Horizon Air has announced it wants to start service from Snohomish County's Paine Field sometime before next summer. The SeaTac-based regional airline said Thursday it is considering initial service to Spokane and Portland. The airline would use 76-seat Bombardier Q400 turboprops for the new service. The airline's announcement came after the Everett City Council voted last month 6-0 in favor of scheduled operations at the field. While the city is encouraging new service, Snohomish County, which owns the airport, is doing the opposite. The county has told airline operators that while it can't stop them from flying from the airport, it doesn't intend to expand or modernize its old terminal at county expense to support the service. Allegiant Airlines earlier this year announced that it too wants to begin service from Paine. Allegiant would fly MD-80 Jets to vacation destinations such as Las Vegas. Neighborhood opposition is strong against airline service at the former Air Force base that is home to the world's largest aircraft factory, Boeing's Everett assembly plant, and to major aircraft overhaul facilities. Having airline service to Paine would save Everett residents what can be a nearly two-hour auto trip to Sea-Tac Airport during rush hour traffic. ... Source: chicagobusiness.com --- 12 days ago
