Indian-American Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, in spotlight as attention focuses on his state's response to Hurricane Gustav, has said thousands of people who had left their homes following evacuation orders may be able to return in the next few days."People should be able to return home over the next several days. Within 24 hours of telling us they're ready, we can reverse the trains and buses and planes that took them out of harm's way," Jindal said. ...

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, once considered a potential running mate of Republican Presidential nominee John McCain, is in spotlight again as attention is focused on his state's response to Hurricane Gustav, which may make or break his political future. His predecessor Kathleen Blanco was severely criticised for her slow response to cope with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, which smashed the Gulf Coast, leading to the flooding of New Orleans three years ago. ...

As horrible as Hurricane Ike was to Texas, and it was, one can't help noticing the disparity in death tolls between Ike and Katrina. It is dispositive, I think, as to the difference between even the nastiest of hurricanes (the Ike event) and the breaching in more than fifty places of federally-built levees (the Katrina event). Louisiana's Republican Governor Bobby Jindal has noticed another disparity , that between the federal government's willingness to lift a recovery burden off the state of Texas and its refusal to do the same for Louisiana. Bush decided Tuesday to have FEMA pick up 100 percent of the costs for debris removal and emergency measures that Texas governments incurred when Hurricane Ike blasted ashore at Galveston last week. When Jindal saw that, he decided to renew his call for eliminating the 25 percent share Louisiana must pay for the public costs from both Ike and Hurricane Gustav, which hit the state 12 days earlier. "Singularly, each was a major disaster; combined, these storms amount to a catastrophic event for the state," Jindal wrote . Even electing a Republican Governor can't help Louisiana keep this President's thumb off the scale. More on Bobby Jindal ...

Like hundreds of thousands of people, my folks down in south Louisiana spent more than a week without electricity after Hurricane Gustav barreled through. When New Orleans escaped without much damage, the national media blew out of town. Largely off camera, just short of a million people in Baton Rouge and central Louisiana suffered in the sweltering heat, unable to participate in the modern world. You think I exaggerate? When my folks just north of Baton Rouge were able to get through on the phone – this was rare – they told me that if you didn't have cash on... ...

In a recent New Orlean Times-Picayune Story, professor Pitney weighs in on Bobby Jindal’s handling of Hurricane Gustav and his future Presidential chances. Pitney believes the future looks bright for Jindal: “Managing a crisis confidently matters a whole lot more than giving a speech,” said political scientist John Pitney Jr., a professor at Claremont McKenna College [...] ...

This Wednesday, t 6 PM, Dino Rossi is bringing arch-conservative Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal to town for a fundraiser at the Bellevue Hilton. I have heard a little whining that Obama should have put Hillary Clinton on the ticket. Had this happened, I believe McCain would have put "rising star" Jindal on the ticket instead of Palin. It would have been no different - a pick that would likely have been just as popular with his "base." In either case, it would be a social conservative who was younger and who could be said to represent a new demographic. In the case of Jindal, he recently signed into law a "chemical castration" bill, which can be seen on video here . He is also an off-shore drilling enthusiast. Although conservatives think nothing of spreading rumors that Obama is a Muslim, Jindal was born a Hindu (to immigrant parents) and converted to Catholicism. Like Palin, Jindal opposes abortion without exception. He opposes stem cell research. He has an A rating from Gun Owners of America. He has voted 97% with the Republican caucus. Since the Palin choice seems to represent an appeal to the base, I can only imagine that Rossi is taking McCain's lead in trying to use a right wing governor to increase his conservative support while simultaneously trying to play to biconceptuals. ...

Similar to Sarah Palin, Bobby Jindal was heralded by conservatives as offering the belief credentials to be Vice President. Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal was interviewed by the Sunday NY Times magazine. Here's what he said about his support for teaching creationism in public schools: Did you always want to be in politics? It was not something I anticipated doing. I always thought I'd go to medical school. I got accepted into medical school and did not end up going. Where were you accepted? At Harvard. Wow. Why would someone with so much knowledge of biology sign a bill allowing the biblical story of Creation to be taught in science class? I don't think that schools should be run by bureaucrats. I think these decisions need to be made by local school boards. In terms of teaching my own kids at home, I do believe there is a Creator. Catholicism doesn't teach authoritatively on evolution or the origins of life, but we do believe that God is our Creator. Read the comments on this post... ...
