Bobby Jenks Will Avoid the DL

Bobby Jenks , missing slider and all, earned his first 5-out save since 2005, using just 10 pitches to turn two key double plays and help the White Sox avoid a sweep at the hands of the Indians. It was only the 8th time in his career that Jenks has earned a save while entering in the 8th, and over two years since he was last recorded a save of more than 3 outs. I missed most of the game, supposedly golfing , and didn't even realize there was an early start until I got in the car and turned on the radio to find the Sox up 2-0. Which brings up a feeling I've had for essentially the entire road trip. I don't know if it's just me--judging by the site's recent stats, I don't think it is--but I've been questioning my own lack of enthusiasm for the Sox lately. I don't even think that's the right way to put it, but I'm lacking any hope of concise eloquence tonight. I'm still a huge White Sox fan, obviously, but there are things that I would normally be able to rattle off at will--the upcoming schedule, for instance, or the rotation probables for the next week--that I just don't feel like keeping on top of. So, when you didn't have a gamethread this morning, it was because I just plain didn't know that the game was at 11 in the freakin' morning. I hadn't bothered to check. I don't watch the scoreboard religiously, and don't have any idea who Twins are facing on any given night. I don't care. The White Sox control their own destiny, and that ...

Inspired by the discussion on whether or not to trade Bobby Jenks--a discussion I rather leave for another day, say, after the season is officially over--because of his decline in velocity and dwindling strikeout rate, I decided to take a look into the Pitch F/X data to see if we could learn anything. If I had chimed in on that discussion, which seemed to center on Jenks' fastball, I would have espoused that it was Jenks' curveball, or lack thereof, that is most responsible for his decline in strikeouts. After examining the data, however, it appears that neither the fastball nor the curveball is the missing pitch; it's his slider. Here's another link to the data , culled from Josh Kalk's Pitch F/X tool. There are some serious caveats to apply to said data. For example, Kalk's tool only seemed to capture about 1/2 of all pitches last season (the top group in the linked table), and while we know Bobby did throw a cutter last season, Kalk's system either did not recognize them as such or chose to hide them under the greater fastball umbrella. With that in mind, you can take what you wish from the following information. Jenks' strikes swining numbers are down almost across the board, with his fastball only missing bats on a surprisingly low 3.9% of pitches thrown, down from 7% last season. Those numbers can perhaps be explained by the bottom row of the spreadsheet which combines all types of fastball Jenks has thrown this season, resul ...

ST. PETERSBURG - White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen announced he will go with Javier Vazquez, Mark Buehrle and John Danks in the first three games of the ALDS series against the Tampa Bay Rays. Guillen also said that if there's a Game 4 he will start right-hander Gavin Floyd. Guillen said it was a "tough decision" leaving Floyd out of the mix for the first three, but he felt he wanted the lefties in the rotation to offset Tampa Bay's tough left-handed hitters (Carlos Pena, Cliff Floyd, Akinori Iwamura, Carl Crawford and Gabe Gross). Guillen would not reveal his playoff roster, but said he had to make tough decisions but that "it's about winning not about feelings." Guillen posted a lineup in his clubhouse that did not include Carlos Quentin listed in the lineup or as a reserve and therefore the assumption is Quentin isn't quite ready to play. Here's what Guillen's lineup looked like: 1. Orlando Cabrera-SS 2. Dewayne Wise-LF 3. Jermaine Dye-RF 4. Jim Thome-DH 5. Paul Konerko-1B 6. Ken Griffey-CF 7. Alexei Ramirez-2B 8. A.J.Pierzynski-C 9. Juan Uribe-3B SP- Javier Vazquez Listed as reserves were: OF Jerry Owens, OF Nick Swisher, OF Brian Anderson, C Toby Hall, INF Josh Fields. Listed in the bullpen were: LHP Clayton Richard, LHP Matt Thornton, RHP Adam Russell, RHP D.J. Carrasco, RHP Octavio Dotel, RHP Scott Linebrink, RHP Bobby Jenks. ...

Eight will be enough in White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen's world. As in the eighth inning. Get to the eighth with a lead -- or at least keep the opponent in check in the eighth -- and the Sox figure to do well in the ninth inning most of the time behind Bobby Jenks. It's Guillen's formula, one he and general manager Ken Williams were thinking about as far back as last season, when bullpen breakdowns told the tale of a lost season. ...

CHICAGO — Thanks to John Danks and the White Sox, Chicago still has one team standing. Danks pitched another big game to save the season and well-traveled DeWayne Wise delivered a two-run double as the White Sox beat Tampa Bay 5-3 Sunday, trimming the Rays' lead in their AL playoff series to 2-1. Game 4 in the best-of-five matchup is Monday in Chicago, with Gavin Floyd facing Tampa Bay's Andy Sonnanstine. Less than 24 hours after the Cubs were swept out of the playoffs by the Dodgers, dashing Chicago's hopes for a crosstown World Series, the White Sox avoided elimination before a black-shirted, white towel-waving crowd of 40,142 in their home park. "At least we play tomorrow," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. "Like I say, we played against the wall before and came out of it." As for that other team in Chicago? "I could care less about the Cubs," he said. Danks, who beat Minnesota 1-0 last Tuesday in the tiebreaker for the AL Central title, shut down the Rays for 6 2-3 innings. "I was more nervous going into the Minnesota game than this game," he said. "Guys try to approach it like a game in June. I think that helps take pressure off us." The 23-year-old lefty gave up five hits and a run before B.J. Upton hit a long, two-run homer with two outs in the seventh that made it 5-3. After a single by Carlos Pena, Octavio Dotel threw a third strike past Evan Longoria. Bobby Jenks pitched the ninth, striking out Pena with a nasty cur ...

Baseball's playoffs begin this afternoon in Philadelphia with Game One of the National League Division Series between the East champion Phillies and wild-card Milwaukee Brewers. The Phillies are hoping Pat Burrell is at full strength for the opener. The left fielder left yesterday's workout with discomfort in his lower back, exiting after taking a swing in batting practice. Burrell hit .250 with 33 homers and 86 RBIs. The Phils-Brewers game will be followed by the NLDS opener in Chicago, where the Central-winning Cubs entertain the West champion Dodgers. The wild-card Boston Red Sox and West champion L.A. Angels cap things off with Game One of their ALDS under the lights in Anaheim. Last night, the Chicago White Sox became the American League Central champs, thanks to a pair of 38-year-old veterans and a 23-year-old pitcher. Jim Thome launched a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh as the White Sox knocked off the Minnesota Twins 1-0 in a one-game playoff at Chicago. Twins starter Nick Blackburn had a two-hit shutout until Thome smacked his 34th home run of the season. That was enough offense for John Danks, who scattered two hits while firing only 89 pitches in eight innings. Danks had a no-hitter until Michael Cuddyer led off the fifth with a double. Cuddyer almost scored the game's first run later in the fifth, but he was cut down at the plate by Ken Griffey Jr. to keep the game scoreless. Bobby Jenks worked a perfect ninth ...
