Every time I read this bio-blurb at the end of a Bob Beckel pontification, it makes me laugh. I don’t know why, but he personifies Wile E. Coyote, somehow. You know, the ACME “Do-it-yourself Tornado Kit,” and all that. I never cease to be amazed at what some people get paid to [...] ...

The Times' Bob Pool went out to Walter Reed Middle School to ask students why a 50-foot-wide image of the front of their school was projected Thursday night behind Sen. John McCain as he accepted the Republican Party's presidential nomination. He got some good guesses: Sixth-grader Joshua Popue offered the explanation most commonly being floated Friday both at the Irvine Avenue campus and in political circles: Somebody in the McCain campaign mistook Walter Reed Middle School for the military's troubled Walter Reed Army Medical Center when preparing the Republicans' high-tech video background wall. "McCain messed up. He was talking about Walter Reed hospital, and he used our picture by mistake," said 11-year-old Joshua. Skyla Swafford, 12, took a more charitable view. "They picked us because our school is one of the nicer schools in the city. They keep it clean and sanitary," the seventh-grader suggested. For the record,  McCain's campaign is characterizing the use of the photo as a way of illustrating the candidate's call "for public education reforms that empower parents and students before bureaucrats and labor unions," as spokesman Tucker Bounds put it. INDIANAPOLIS — Chicago rediscovered its winning formula Sunday night. Play tough defense, control the ball and make no major mistakes. No, it wasn't enough to win a Super Bowl 19 months ago against Indianapolis, but it was the perfect scenario to ruin the Colts' grand reopening of the new Lucas Oil Stadium 29-13. Chicago's win ended Indy's remarkable streak of 21 consecutive victories in September and October, the league's longest run since the Green Bay Packers won 23 pre-November games from 1928-32. It's also the first time since 2004 the Colts won't start at least 7-0. How did the Bears do it? With an old style and a new look. Matt Forte, the first Chicago rookie to start at running back since Walter Payton in 1975, ran for 123 yards _ 50 on a first-quarter TD run in which he broke one tackle and then outran Bob Sanders, last season's defensive player of the year, to the end zone. Kyle Orton, who wrested the starting job from Rex Grossman, was 13-of-21 for 150 yards and had no turnovers. Meanwhile, two-time league MVP Peyton Manning wasn't himself. He burned timeouts to save the play clock and didn't have that precision timing with his receivers after missing six weeks of practice. It was Manning's first game action since having surgery to remove an infected bursa sac from his left knee in mid-July. And the Colts' defense, which allowed the fewest points in the NFL last season, couldn't get off the field. Heck, coach Tony Dungy ...

Why does the republican party often give us such disastrous picks for Vice President? Ike gave us Nixon, twice. As President, Nixon twice chose Spiro Agnew. George H W Bush, who was a reasonable choice for VP picked by Reagan to reassure us, returned the favor by twice choosing Dan Quayle. In 1996, Bob Dole, who had been picked as a VP candidate earlier by Jerry Ford, picked Jack Kemp, the former football quarterback and proponent of fringe economic policy views. George W Bush has twice given us Dick Cheney. Now John McCain has picked Sarah Palin. There is nothing that Democrats have done that compares to Nixon, Agnew, Quayle, Kemp, Cheney and Palin. These are the Democrat VP candidates, since 1952 1952 - Alabama Senator John Sparkman 1956 - Tennessee Senator Estes Kefauver 1960 - Texas Senator Lyndon B. Johnson 1964 - Minnesota Senator Hubert Humphrey 1968 - Maine Senator Edmund Muskie 1972 - Former Ambassador Sargent Shriver 1976 - Minnesota Senator Walter Mondale 1980 - Minnesota Senator Walter Mondale 1984 - New York Congresswoman Geraldine A. Ferraro 1988 - Texas Senator Lloyd Bentsen 1992 - Tennessee Senator Al Gore 1996 - Tennessee Senator Al Gore 2000 - Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman 2004 - North Carolina Senator John Edwards 2008 - Delaware Senator Joe Biden These are the Republican VP candidates, since 1952 1952 - California Senator Richard Nixon 1956 - California Senator Richard Nixon 1960 - Ambassador Henry Cabot Lo ...

Graydon Carter and his team at Vanity Fair wisely, and not inappropriately, added Matt Drudge to their "New Establishment" list of important people readers should shamelessly imitate and pander to. The internet gossip ranks at 74, just above Donatella Versace and just below Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto. More importantly, he posted the magazine's full list to his highly-trafficked website, thus encouraging his readers to go buy the magazine and figure out why, say, Vogue Anna Wintour has suddenly been added (mysterious) and why Russian strongman Vladimir Putin is entering the rankings this year at number (gimmick to generate buzz and boost sales). Other strange additions, and the full list, after the jump. Marc Jacobs is "returning?" Well, if the designer can leverage his sex life into a New Yorker profile, he's probably a decent fit here, in the pages of the New Yorker 's more fashion-conscious corporate sibling. Movie moguls Harvey and Bob Weinstein plummet to 87 from 41. But they're so used to sinking feelings they probably barely notice them anymore. Venture capitalist (and godfather to Google and Yahoo ) Michael Moritz fell to 88 from 56. Is the shine off Google that badly? What an odd time to add Walter Mossberg to the list. The grossly overpaid Wall Street Journal technology columnist was recently replaced on CNBC by the Times ' David Pogue, whose theater background and hammy stage personality make him by far the ...

She may have been Lost , but it looks like the redheaded Rebecca Mader has found a path and a sexy on-screen husband. The Hollywood Reporter posts that Mader is in final negotiations to play the lead female role in the super-wacky sounding Men Who Stare at Goats . That means she gets to play wife to Ewan McGregor's Bob Wilton -- a reporter in Iraq who meets a man ( George Clooney ) who says he's a "former secret U.S. military psychic soldier who was reactivated after 9/11." The plot is so very strange, and most likely destined to be awesome. But that's not all -- the film is also getting Stephen Lang , fresh off Avatar and Public Enemies . In the what-if area of cinematic news: With a Ghostbusters sequel on the way, Bill Murray told MTV that he thinks a woman should be in on the action. That's not a bad idea at all, so the big question is: What funny woman out there can bring on the laughs AND kick ghostly ass? ( Editor's interjection: Jenna Fischer .) Meanwhile, the Fame cast has now come together, according to THR . Unlike star Thomas Dekker, who has made a name for himself through Terminators and Heroes, this is a big cast of unknowns -- Kristy Flores, Paul Iacono, Paul McGill, Naturi Naughton, Kay Panabaker, Kherington Payne, Collins Pennie, Walter Perez and Anna Maria Perez de Tagle. You can hit the link to find out who they're going to play, and in the meantime, wonder who Debbie Allen will be this time around. Rumor has i ...
