OK, so Oliver Stone called it W . But he could have named his new movie Father Knows Best. You can see for yourself starting Oct. 17 when Stone's biopic of U. S. President George W. Bush opens in theatres just as the Yank presidential election gets into the crucial stages of the pick-me contest. Stone's two-hour-and-seven-minute profile won't have much of an impact on the selection process but you can expect your fellow Americans to have many and varied opinions as Bush is depicted from his under-achieving college days to the more news-worthy White House engineered Iraq invasion. Through all of those wide-ranging activities which vary in tone from comedy to drama and back again, it makes you wonder. Lots of wonder as we travel through the thrill of W. victories and the agony of W. defeats. Recurring like a bad dream, there are the appearances of disapproving dad George Sr. admonishing his not-so-inspired son. Remember Stone's Nixon ? The director allows us behind the scenes here too, so we are witnesses to W.'s early reckless phase of drinking and driving and messing up just as some self-entitled good ol' boy Texans would. We also get full view of W.'s born-again conversion and his commitment to making himself a better, albeit still guileless, person. At the forefront of all this is Josh Brolin, another Texan, who slips into the boots of W. James Cromwell plays father figure George H. W. Bush, looming over each and every scene ... Anirban Basu made a stink at a recent city school board meeting over the renaming of Benjamin Franklin Middle School to Masonville Cove Community Academy, saying he thought it was appropriate for city students to attend a school honoring one of the nation's founding fathers. In voting to rename the school as the community requested, other board members vowed to keep Ben Franklin under consideration in determining future school titles. Now, Basu has a second dignitary on his list of people whose names belong on Baltimore school buildings: Buzzy Hettleman. As Basu and Bob Heck were reappointed to the school board yesterday and David Stone was named as Hettleman's replacement, Basu had high praise for his departing colleague. "I've never met an individual so dedicated to children as him, even perhaps the current superintendent," he said. Director Oliver Stone spoke to a star-studded audience last night at a special screening of "W.," his controversial and much-anticipated biopic of President George W. Bush . Before the screening in West Los Angeles, Stone spoke to the glitterati about the journalistic sources for the film's story and why he felt compelled to make this film. In the audience were the film's star, Josh Brolin, his father, James Brolin , and stepmom Barbra Streisand, as well as Richard Dreyfus, Al Pacino, Noah Wiley , Jodie Foster, James Woods, Paul Haggis, Sid Ganis, Brett Ratner, Bill Maher, Ellen Barkin, Casey Affleck, Ed Zwick, James Mangold and Maria Bello . "First, let me tell you that this is based on a true story, despite what many of you may believe," Stone said. "We did a lot of research to bring to light some of that murky stuff that has taken a long time to come out. In that vein, I have to thank all the investigative journalists, the dozen or so that really broke the ice, including Bob Woodward, David Corn, Michael Isikoff, Ron Suskind, Jane Mayer, Barton Gelman, Frank Rich. So many of them worked very hard, and that raw body of work was the basis from which to simplify and condense into our movie."
