With almost 50 years of songs in his back pocket, Bob Dylan certainly has the ability to mix it up from night to night. Sure, you’ll get a decent serving of classic songs at most shows, like “Highway 61 Revisited” or “Like a Rolling Stone.” And you’ll always get tracks off his recent, critically acclaimed [...] ...

I did a Jivamukti workshop last week and it was so cool to do a class where music is used well. I don’t mean playing frenetic drumming on a tinny boombox until the teacher realizes it’s driving people crazy and turns it off, but really used to manage the energy of the class. Lots of teachers, [...] ...

Why it's significant: With a story practically tailor-made for NPR, Rodriguez, a laborer/musician from Detroit discovers that while virtually unknown in the US, he has achieved platinum status in Australia and South Africa, where his many fans believe that he died mysteriously years ago. However, still alive and well, Rodriguez and his lost, brilliant, psychedelic ‘60s classic Cold Fact finally get a proper reissue in the United States. Sometimes I hear a song and know immediately it belongs in my selfish lexicon of song treasures. The music comes on and I instantly sense future mixtapes, playlists, and memories gathering around it like leaves in fall, or beer bottles at a good party. Upon my first spin of Rodriguez’s Cold Fact , I knew that this album was one of those rare, special records that my musical obsessions are made of. From the first strums and wandering strings of the stellar lead-off track “ Sugar Man ,” it’s obvious that Rodriguez takes much inspiration from the tasteful, if not off-kilter psychedelic sonic experimentation of fellow ‘60s artists like Love and Jefferson Airplane , all while giving a knowing wink and nod to folk-god Bob Dylan . However, as the album progresses, Cold Fact reveals a more subtle, deeper instrumentation missing from many of its ‘60s contemporaries. It’s these well placed horns, clarinets, flutes, vibraphones, and percussion that keep me coming back for more on tracks like the delicate, ad ...

"The Times They Are A-Changin'" is one of Bob Dylan's most famous songs, a bellwether of the tumult that would engulf the late '60s. John Mellencamp gives it an updated context with a cover he recorded and posted on his website in the News column on the right-hand rail. Like Dylan, Mellencamp sings it alone with an acoustic guitar in the black-and-white video shot with a stationary camera. It's timely: as Jim Bessman points out in the essay accompanying the video, change is the leitmotif of both presidential campaigns this year, with Obama and the Democrats promising "change we can believe in" and McCain and the Republicans hailing their vice-presidential pick, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, as an "agent of change." Bessman gets a little carried away when he writes, "this veritable battle-cry for a generation ('Come senators, congressmen, please heed the call') has never seemed more timely than now," but the song still resonates deeply 44 years later. ...

Songs With Vision - Cover Songs to Promote Social Awareness Deadline: Dec 8, 2008 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time Songs With Vision is looking for cover songs in all genres that raise social awareness. All songs must be unique versions of familiar songs and will be considered for licensing in advertisements, as well as a compilation CD. Compensation for advertisement licensing is a 50/50 split on the master license and a minimum $150 for master rights for the compilation. The tendency of the world to win' by a show of force should be a central focus of songs. Although that songs that feature a show of solidarity for a more global state and personal support or loss due to those showings of force are also accepted. Submitted songs do not need to be overtly about war itself. An example of a song on the social side would be Bryan Ferry's version of Bob Dylan's "Hard Rain's Gonna Fall." Other examples of artists include Jackson Browne, Bob Dylan and others whose words are admonitions to the causes of war. Beyond the obvious protest and politically charged themes, songs like "Stand By Me", "Home" by Daughtry, and Blind Faith's "Can't Find My Way Home" are other good examples of accepted songs. Words by: Bobby Coleman | Images by: Rod Snyder The Allman Brothers Band and Bob Weir & RatDog 08.23.08 :: Susquehanna Bank Center :: Camden, NJ Gregg Allman :: 08.23 :: New Jersey There were about 11,000 fans out on a hot summer night in a sea of tie-dye shirts blending in with the evening light on the open field next to the Delaware River. Bob Weir & RatDog was the opening act for the Allman Brothers Band and fans of all ages had funneled into the grounds. Weir, looking like a jolly rock & roll Santa Claus, and RatDog started the show slowly with a nice jam. As the reefer smoke ascended to the ceiling along with the balloons that fans were batting around, everyone around me began dancing and cheering as they went into "Shakedown Street." Abandoning the structures of conventional music, the band - Weir (vocals, guitar), Mark Karan (guitar), Kenny Brooks (sax), Jeff Chimenti (keys), Jay Lane (drums) and Robin Sylvester (bass) improvised the jams by rearranging pitches, harmonies, frequencies, resonance and duration in a creative chaos. As these guys "noodled" with their instruments, easing into a wandering cosmic exploration, it was somewhat like being dropped into the middle of a new galaxy where things look familiar but nothing is in the same place and we are left to ponder the relationship of their meaning. In short, music for music's sake. Dylan's "Queen Jane Approximately" was performed very peacefully and melodically with a ...

This 22-year-old Swede says her burbling electro-pop is inspired by Madonna and Bob Dylan. After listening to her debut, I’m also hearing Missing Persons, PJ Harvey and the guy who designs those big honkin’ IKEA catalogues. This is a hip, mellow affair, the kind of clean, sleek heartbreak you’d hear at a dinner party thrown by young Chicago architects. Not sure if that's a good thing or not. Whattaya think? ...

Until Jack Weil created his shirts, there was no distinctively western look in American couture. His shirts though became extremely famous. The Premium Blue Flannel Plaid was worn by Ronald Reagan, and the Pink Gabardine by Bob Dylan. They defined what it was to be a "western cowboy", even if you actually lived in a city. ...

The people of the working and underclass found a voice in the 40s music of singer-songwriters such as Woody Guthrie and Lead Belly, in music appropriately termed “folk music.” It was a genre that gained in popularity in the 60s and 70s, when musicians such as Joan Baez and Bob Dylan led the folk music revival. The voice of the singer-songwriter peaked as Dylan evolved into a more political and acerbic musician and Johnny Cash and Neil Young became stars. The movement had escalated to new heights. Then came The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and the whole British Invasion. Rock and roll, and bands in general took over. Greats like Dylan, Cash, and Young never burned out, and they still inspire countless musicians, but the singer-songwriter faded from the airwaves. The 70s were dominated by disco, the 80s ruled by new wave, and the 90s taken over by alternative rock. Rock, pop, and hip-hop rule the mainstream, but the turn of the century has brought the birth of a new crop of singer-songwriters — Bright Eyes (Conor Oberst), Iron and Wine (Samuel Beam), and recently Bon Iver (Justin Vernon) and Devendra Banhart. Plymouth singer-songwriter Stephen MacDonald is part of the reemergence. “I really don’t know what spawned this whole folk movement around here,” said MacDonald. “I think people were finally getting fed up with hearing the same stuff all the time. There’s something comforting about a person with one instrument pouring their heart o ...

Hurricane Hanna is fast approaching the U.S. East Coast with another hurricane, Ike, hot on her heels. To be sure, the 2008 hurricane season, covering the Atlantic basin and the Eastern and mid-Pacific areas, is in full swing. To help keep track of these storms, we've added a "Hurricane Season 2008" folder under "Weather" in Google Earth. In this folder, you'll find layers for each of the currently active storms of the 2008 Hurricane Season, including hurricanes, cyclones, and tropical storms. These layers, courtesy of the National Hurricane Center , include 72-hour forecasted storm center positions, potential 72-hour storm track areas, and associated advisories (to paraphrase the words of fellow Minnesotan Bob Dylan, they tell you the story of the hurricane). The forecasted center positions are represented by the hurricane-like icons and correspond in size and shape to the intensity and type of storm. As these are estimated positions, potential storm track areas are also included, represented by the red polygons. These polygons encapsulate the relative uncertaintly of the forecasted center point, so that two-thirds of historical forecast errors for a given timestep fall within this boundary. So in other words, these areas represent the areas most likely to be affected by the storm at a given time. You might also want to take a look at Weather's "Clouds" and "Radar" layers as well. In the "Clouds" layer, derived from hourly-updated, sat ...
