CNet calls it a long-shot bid for the geek vote : Speaking [in Las Vegas] at a political conference on Friday, Barr focused almost exclusively on privacy and eavesdropping–and argued that both major parties are far too surveillance-happy. “Both of them will continue down the same track,” Barr said, noting that both McCain and Obama supported last week’s bill to immunize telecommunications companies that illegally opened their networks to government snoops. Congress’ legislative rewrite of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act is “not about surveilling Al Qaeda,” Barr said. “It’s about surveilling U.S. citizens in America.” He added, for good measure: “This administration is the most anti-privacy, the most anti-individual freedom, in our nation’s history, certainly in my lifetime.” This is hardly a Bush-McCain species of Republican speaking. It underlines Barr’s appeal: If you’re a traditional conservative who disagrees with the big-government policies, the surveillance, the inflation, the deficit spending, and the unnecessary wars of the Bush administration, vote for me. I was one of you, once. It might work. More precisely, it might work well enough–think a Republican equivalent of Ralph Nader–to make a difference in states that would have tilted toward McCain otherwise. It’s certainly a more attractive message than the Libertarians’ 2004 candidate , a telemarketer-turned-programmer, had to offer. Barr has an arch-conservativ ...

Libertarian Party candidate Bob Barr managed a little airtime and a little ink this weekend. Michael Whitney ran into Libertarian Party presidential candidate Bob Barr and found out that the former Georgia lawmaker writes his own entries on the social networking site Twitter. Whitney has some fun with the discovery, noting that a few of Barr's entries are semantically challenged . A couple of other interesting things I noticed while looking at Barr's Twitter account: He's following far more people (4,795) than he has followers (767). That can't be a good sign when you're a candidate for federal office. Especially when his closest ideological counterpart is Ron Paul, a true Internet phenomenon. However, he's also only posted 24 entries so far. So, maybe the number of followers will spike in the coming days/months. Barr is using the account mainly as a promotional device, but you have question some of the content he's putting out there. Out of those 24 "updates," 7 are requests to follow his website and/or Twitter account. 5 updates are links to Bob Barr You Tube videos and the rest are links to articles about/by Barr. ...

According to Zogby's first general election poll of the season, Bob Barr is polling at 6% nationally. This is virtually unheard of for 3rd party candidates. The last competitive 3rd party candidate, Ross Perot, was polling at 7% nationally at this time in 1992. Our two party system is designed to keep out 3rd party candidates, so very few even get noticed. Bob Barr's excellent start is a good sign that Americans want more choices and are getting tired of voting for who they consider to be the lesser of two evils. Shakopee Ron Paul Revolution ...

Several of us got the chance to talk to Bob Barr today on a conference call. I found the candidate to be highly engaging and ready to reach out to bloggers and the new media in any way that he can. Below are a few of the topics covered and the answers given. Q. What does it mean to you to run as a 3rd party candidate? Barr hopes to accomplish three things. He feels that the political climate is sour, people are sour on government and their choices in candidates and that the two party system is not serving them well. He recognizes that he’s a long shot, but still believes he can win in a three way race. Second, he would like to “ open the electorates eyes ” to the fact that they do not need to be “ bound to the artificial constraints of a two party system “. And last, he would like the opportunity to discuss the issues in a more fundamentally constitutional way with the voters. Q. How would you make substantive cuts in the size of the government? Barr would lead by example, ordering an immediate 10% cut in the Executive office for personnel and spending. Further, he would ask Congress, (both parties) to start cutting costs or “ they will be next “. Any bill that increases the national debt will be vetoed. No increases in appropriations for any office will be tolerated. He would immediately put a freeze on all federal spending. He would also eliminate the Dept. of Education, reduce the size and scope of the Dept. of Energy, and est ...
