Now that Myrtle Beach's planned Boardwalk has the Community Appearance Board's approval, discussions are turning green - meaning landscaping and money. At today's Downtown Redevelopment Corp. meeting, Executive Director David Sebok will update his group on the appearance board's conditional OK. On Oct. 21 he will talk to the Myrtle Beach City Council about funding the project. The appearance board last week gave Boardwalk plans a thumbs up but reserved the right to further examine the Downtown Redevelopment Corp.'s plans for landscaping the milelong shorefront walkway, because board members said they hadn't spent sufficient time discussing that aspect of the plans. ... The Myrtle Beach Community Appearance Board gave the thumbs up to plans for a mile-long Boardwalk between First and 14th avenues north, with some slight conditions. The board wants a last look at landscaping plans, which will likely be presented in two weeks, said Downtown Redevelopment Corporation Executive Director David Sebok. The CAB also wants to see the lighting on the Boardwalk's "shade sails," or fabric shades that will be at street ends and overlooks. Sebok said the lighting is meant to provide a colorful glow, but not to affect nearby properties, and the CAB said if it can see the lighting at the time it is installed, board members can make a better decision and any adjustments can be made with the contractor. ...

The dune climb is back and easier than ever. Ottawa County park officials said Mount Pisgah in Park Township will reopen beginning Saturday morning, Oct. 11. Instead of the familiar open dune to scale, residents can use the new set of stairs and Boardwalk constructed by the county parks department. Getting to the dune Mount Pisgah can be accessed off Ottawa Beach Road near Third Avenue in Park Township. Public parking is available at an Ottawa County parking lot near Black Lake Avenue and Ottawa Beach Road. Construction on the structures began earlier this summer. They were designed to protect the fragile dune environment, park officials said. The structures were expected to open in mid-October, but officials said they picked up the pace when good weather was predicted for the weekend. “We want to get people up there,” said John Scholtz, county parks director. He said his office has received a number of calls and e-mails expressing excitement about the project. Scholtz said work will continue through the fall to put the finishing touches on the landscaping of the area. “We don’t have any interpretive signing or permanent signing,” he said. ...
