Once I'd gone public with my admiration for The Duchess , I knew it was just a matter of time before Cooper would submit a comment citing "The Story of Bo Diddley" by The Animals , wherein Eric Burdon does indeed recount the story of Bo Diddley, born Ellis McDaniel. And then: "Well, we been doin' this number 'Bo Diddley' for quite some time now Bo Diddley visited this country last year And we were playin' the Club A-Go-Go in Newcastle, our home town And the doors opened one night And to our surprise in walked the man himself, Bo Diddley ... The Chess Box When people discuss Bo Diddley's music, as many did after his death earler this year, they either talk about his influence on later artists or the influence on him of African and Cuban music. Bo Diddley's output, however, is wonderful in its own right; distinctive, with several all-time Rock and Roll songs such as I'm a Man and You Can't Judge a Book by it's Cover and some gems with which few casual Rock and Roll fans, tragically, are familiar. From the pre-soul period, and, therefore not much influenced by gospel, but not quite blues, all of his songs combine great guitar playing, clever and original song writing, and vastly under-rated vocals full of personality. That his songs are personality-driven may be why Bo Diddley isn't as well known as other Rock pioneers, for, like Otis Redding, few big, mainstream acts have dared to remake his songs (Please don't bring up the awful George Thorogood.). Or, maybe 60 years after first on the scene, the music is still too original for a mainstream audience. Here are some of my favorites: 1. Dearest Darling. His most impassioned and serious song.** 2. I'm a Man. What a lovely thought. Sort of my theme song. 3. Mona. Strait to the point. 4. Bring it to Jerome. Another blast of confident manhood. 5. Who do you Love? More sophisticated than people realize. "Hoodoo" or "Who do?" 6. Say Boss Man. I love the man's resignation, his matter-of-fact approach to his plight. Compare the famil ... Bo Diddley’s influence was not only musical, but sartorial (see also: Isaac Hayes , R.I.P.). Somebody has to represent the African-American inventors of rock’n’roll on the list, and while I have much respect for Little Richard, his singular vocal style and use of the piano as primary instrumentation place him outside the mainstream. Chuck Berry is the obvious choice, maybe even the smart one, but the late Ellas McDaniel (a.k.a. Bo Diddley) was arguably even more innovative. Rock’n’roll famously changed popular music by placing the emphasis on rhythm rather than melody; Diddley took it one step further and added an element of pure sound, pioneering the use of reverb and distortion that Jimi Hendrix would later take into outer space. But while Bo had one foot in the future, he also had one way back in the past. The rumbling drums found on most of his music are a direct link to rock’s African roots. He was most famous, of course, for the Bo Diddley beat , but even when he didn’t use it—as on “Who Do You Love”—he could lay down the tribal thunder with the best of them. ... CD Edition limited to 5000 non-numbered limited edition copies. Dedicated to the late lamented Ellas McDaniel a/k/a Bo Diddley, this second Hip-O Select volume of his classic Chess recordings stands as a reminder of how endlessly creative and groundbreaking "The Originator" was. The 52-track volume covers all of his 1959 home and Chess studio recordings, plus half of his first 1960 session. And it shows Mr. Diddley expanding his musical base far and wide, including adding a second guitarist, emphasizing melodies very different than his original blues base, and working on a number of intriguing guitar and rhythm-based instrumentals. There is only one major hit here, the title song, but this volume is a treasure trove of Diddley-ized rare gems - 20 previously unreleased songs or alternates - plus many tracks seeing life on CD for the first time in the U.S. (and sometimes anywhere). The double CD also includes insightful liner notes by Diddley biographer/discographer George R. White, plus complete track by track credits. Track listing:Disc 11. Mama Mia2.
