It will be the Blues New England style at Battis Field this weekend, with a full roster of musicians and all proceeds helping veterans and the homeless. The event is the brainchild of Karen Blair, and it’s her way of giving back to the veterans, the homeless and the hungry. “I don’t have a lot of money, I’m a regular person. I work, I own my own business. I’m a busy woman, but I have time,” said the owner and editor of the Freebird Times. “I believe in giving. If you give you get.” Blair has been organizing the Festival all year, and when it’s over, all the proceeds will be donated to charities, including the Middleboro Veterans Outreach Center, the Nathan Hale Foundation and the Conway House. The theme this year is veterans, and Blair said despite a tough economy sponsors “dug deep.” The veterans will open the Festival with a formal flag raising ceremony, and close it by retiring the flag at the end of the night, Blair said. “I’ve always donated to veterans,” said the daughter of retired Army Master Sgt. Edgar C. Britt. “Send me the envelope and I’m the person that will send the money.” Her father spent 32 years in the military. He was with the Special Forces and did tours in Korea, Vietnam and during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Blair said men like her father deserve to be remembered. For her, she said, it’s God, country and family. And that’s what it’s all about at “The New England Red, White and Blues Festival,” which will primar ...

Over the past few Augusts, I've been lamenting the fact that I'm not in Edinburgh, soaking up the Festival. For several years in the early 2000s, I went every year and hurtled around for the month writing reviews and features for a variety of media organizations from The Economist and The Scotsman to the BBC and The San Francisco Bay Guardian. Today, though, I'm not feeling quite so bad about being on the other side of the world. A friend of mine (and former Edinburgh Festival employee) who lives in the city sent me a hilarious email this afternoon lamenting the money she's wasted this summer catching bum shows at the Edinburgh International Festival . With her permission, I thought I'd share her experiences with you: "Oh boy - how much tripe can one girl take?" Her email begins. "The one good thing we saw was the dance company Rosas doing a night to some live performance of Steve Reich's music. Apart from the dodgy eighties' number with the synthesizers and maracas, which did eventually do my head in, it was really exciting stuff." "The rest was just bollocks." "We saw the world premiere of Heiner Goebbels' new show with the Hilliard Ensemble on Thursday - and I fell asleep only to wake and raise an eyebrow just at the moment when one of the singers intoned "I was asleep, I wish I were dead" (or something similar) and K [my friend's partner] got the giggles bad. Think we may have disgraced ourselves. We left in the interval. A t ...

When Calvin Cooke was a teenager, he had a dream about a new way to tune his steel guitar. He was somewhere in Georgia, on tour with a bishop from his Cleveland-based Pentecostal church. “I kept hearing that tuning, and I tuned my guitar to it,” Cooke said, pronouncing it “GI-tar.” The bishop told Cooke to play the guitar that way that night in church. “‘Then you’ll know if that was for you,’” Cooke recalled the bishop saying. “We went to church that night, and people really got very emotional about how we were playing,” Cooke recalled. “The bishop said, ‘Well that’s your tuning, that’s something God gave it to you, so you play that way from now on.’ OLD CAPITOL Blues & BBQS featuring Calvin Cooke *  When: Noon to midnight Saturday; live music schedule: Dave Herrero feat. Felix Reyes — 4 p.m.; Tarbox Ramblers — 6 p.m.; Calvin Cooke — 8 p.m.; and Howard and the White Boys — 10 p.m. *  Where: Old State Capitol Plaza, northwest corner *  Tickets: $5; children 12 and younger get in free “And I’ve been playing that particular tuning ever since.” Cooke is headlining the Old Capitol Blues and BBQs at 8 p.m. Saturday. The annual Festival, in its fifth year, goes from noon to midnight on the Old State Capitol Plaza and, as its name suggests, features live music and barbecue competitions. Cooke grew up in a church in which the steel guitar — not a piano or organ — was the main instrument. It’s a style that came to be known as “sacred steel ...
