KIRKSVILLE — Banjo and fiddle players will be jamming all weekend at the NEMO Fairgrounds for the 35th annual Bluegrass America Showcase of Bands. The four-day festival began last night and will run until Sunday afternoon. Organizer Chuck Stearman understands his favorite genre of music isn’t the most popular, but is adored by many fans. “Bluegrass is not a commercial form of music,” Stearman said. “The people that understand it really support it.” Bluegrass lovers from all over the country have traveled to the Kirksville area to take part in the event. Stearman says the camping aspect brings another element to the festival. “We have people from as far as Minnesota come this weekend,” Stearman said. “They come from all over and a lot of them stay in hotels or they bring their campers. It’s a nation-wide thing and we draw from a wide area.” Festival organizers expect to bring nearly 600 people for this weekend’s festivities. While bands are scheduled to play throughout each day, Stearman believes some of the best Bluesgrass will be heard away from the main stage. “There will be jam sessions at various locations,” Stearman added. “And after-hours, there will be a lot of all-night jamming.” He noted the Bluegrass music brings the people out to these festivals, but the people also bond together around their favorite music. “We have a lot of fans that come for the music and a lot of them are musicians themselves,” Stearman added. ...
