WASHINGTON - It was neoconservative pundit Charles Krauthammer who, in the wake of the Soviet Union’s collapse, inaugurated Washington’s unipolar moment. ‘America is no mere international citizen. It is the dominant power in the world, more dominant than any since Rome,’ he wrote then, before the Afghan and Iraq wars, before Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay, [...] ...

by Robert Weitzel “If I had a world of my own . . . nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn't. And contrary wise, what is, it wouldn't be. And what it wouldn't be, it would.” -Alice in Wonderland Alice: “You want democracy in the Middle East?” Uncle Sam: “I do.” Alice: “And Iran was a democracy?” Uncle Sam: “It was.” Alice: “With a constitution?” Uncle Sam: “Of course!” Alice: “But you replaced that democracy with a dictatorship?” Uncle Sam: “ I certainly did!” Alice: “I don’t understand you?” Uncle Sam: “My dear, how else will democracy flourish in the Middle East?” Alice: “It’s all so dreadfully confusing.” In Lewis Carroll’s “Through the Looking Glass,” the White Queen assured Alice that “it's a poor sort of memory that only works backwards.” A contemporary reader stepping into the “looking glass” world of U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East may well understand the Queen’s contrariness as “Blowback”—an event that appears to be without cause but is the unintended consequence of a past action. Blowback is a “sort of memory” that always works forward. In 1953, Uncle Sam, at the behest of his British ally, stepped through the looking glass to attack Iran. The CIA’s month-long covert war deposed the popularly elected Mohammad Mossadegh and ended the Middle East’s oldest constitutional democracy. To secure a foothold for democracy in the region — and keep oil flowing at an Anglo-American price — Uncle ...

My City Hall partner Dave Levinthal has ably covered surging plans to curb public smoking in Dallas . But as he's in the largely smoke-free land of the Canadian Arctic archipelago (lion seals and polar bears being non-smokers), I'll bring you an e-mail we received today from the owner of some local ciggy shops. Read his note after the jump and comment away. --Rudolph Bush ...

Uncle Sam's foreign policy in the Middle East has created Alice in Wonderland's contrary world where ''what is, it wouldn't be. And what it wouldn't be, it would.'' Obama is getting hit hard by McCain today, in a conference call , for an interview in which he appeared to go beyond supporting the recent Supreme Court decision granting habeas corpus rights to Guantanamo detainees (which McCain opposed) by suggesting that they may be entitled to criminal trials. It could be fertile ground for McCain, an opening to attack Obama where he's weakest on issues of strength, toughness on terrorism, and suggest that his juridical mindset will get in the way of doing what's necessary to protect the country. The Obama interview occurred yesterday with ABC. Transcript is here . Obama was arguing that, unlike Bush, he could secure national security without violating the Constitution: "....(L)et's take the example of Guantanamo. What we know is that, in previous terrorist attacks -- for example, the first attack against the World Trade Center, we were able to arrest those responsible, put them on trial. They are currently in U.S. prisons, incapacitated. "And the fact that the administration has not tried to do that has created a situation where not only have we never actually put many of these folks on trial, but we have destroyed our credibility when it comes to rule of law all around the world, and given a huge boost to terrorist recruitment in countries that say, "Look, this is how the United States treats Muslims." "So that, I think, is an example of something that was unnecessary. We could have done th ...

The hits just keeping on coming for Keith Olbermann, the discredited and widely disparaged tax deadbeat who poses as a "newsie" on something called MSNBC several nights each when he is not too busy helping his 24-year old live in girl-toy edit her freelance reports for Channel 11 News. Pulitizer-Prize winning TV critic Howard Rosenberg poses the age-old question: Is Olbermann's snide act on MSNBC the future of TV news? Rosenberg's conclusion: Is his ends-justifies-means credo good for the news biz? The answer is no The piece is a must-read for Olbermann Watch fans but let me tease a few of the best lines: Olbermann (and Matthews) spent the election season heckling Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton from deep inside Sen. Barack Obama's hip pocket and hammering Sen. John McCain since Day One. When Obama clinched the Democratic nomination this week...calming down these guys would have required a defibrillator Olbermann's homage to iconic Edward R. Murrow is like...a Cyclops saluting Brad Pitt Guffaw. ...
