This is a follow up to our post last month that listed some of the top tech Bloggers according to TechMeme. (((Via Treehugger.))) http://blogs.moneycentral.msn.com/topstocks/archive/2008/05/06/a-scary-thought-gasoline-at-7-50-a-gallon.aspx Link: A scary thought: Gasoline at $7.50 a gallon - Top Stocks . (...) If crude hits $150 a barrel, we could be looking at $5 a gallon or so for the retail price of gasoline. That's based on Tuesday's $3.61-a-gallon national average and the rule of thumb that, for every $1 increase in crude oil, the pump price rises 5 cents a gallon. If crude hits $200, the retail price of gas jumps to $7.52 a gallon. (Plus or minus a few cents) To fill the 10-gallon gas tank on my Honda Civic would cost $75.20, probably more because I live in Washington state, which has relatively high gasoline taxes. (...) Gasoline at $7.50 a gallon is something nobody should go into denial over because there are going to be big problems from prices at levels I've suggested, including: Will there be any U.S.-based auto manufacturers left? The answer depends entirely on how fast they can transform their product lines. Chrysler is in deep trouble already. That probably means more stress for the Midwest. Will there be any domestic airlines left? The so-called legacy airlines (American, United, Northwest, Delta and Continental) would either try to combine into one big carrier or simply disappear. They're having serious troubles surviving as it is. This means big troubles for cities where these airlines operate ...

In the wake of my previous post and Gina’s PR blacklist that sprang from it, it seems like a good chunk of the PR industry is blogging about the things they should and shouldn’t be doing, but I’m not seeing a lot of practical real-world solutions that would work for Bloggers getting pitched. The celebrities niche always had me curious. I am not a fan of celebrity gossip myself, but as a web publisher I do know that It is one of the most popular and most profitable niches on the Internet. While there are literally hundreds of blogs covering the traditional angle of it already (i.e. the Britney Spears got drunk again stuff), I just know one that is focused on web and tech celebrities: ValleyWag. Guess what, I will give it a shot and launch a blog covering that niche as well. ...

The former GM of the Dodgers, Paul DePodesta, snagged a job with the Padres front office after the Dodgers (naively, in my opinion) let him go two years ago. He recently started a blog, and I have to say that the more blogs we see from people in actual power in professional sports, the better the blogosphere will be. Leonsis and Cuban have blogs, but they mostly seem to be centered on things other than their team, except when they link to another blog that has nice things to say about their team. And neither seem to be particularly insightful from an insider point of view (yeah, you fans are awesome! Caps ruuule!). Our local teams don’t exactly do themselves proud either. Chris Brown is a paid blogger for the Bills, and he has by far the best “mainstream” blog, but we still have to take everything he chooses to address with a grain of salt. Still, his blog just shows how much more insight is available when you are connected with the team . Still, there is little chance of any dissension coming from there. I understand why, don’t get me wrong, but you need to balance that out with other views. For the Sabres, Brian Wheeler allegedly writes a blog . But it sucks, and I think he’s a dick for never sending me an e-mail when I sent him numerous messages welcoming him to the blogosphere. Yes, I can be a bitter, bitter man. Still, no great insight coming from here. The question becomes, can DePo, or any other front- ...

"I have not encountered this problem, but I know from other Bloggers that following a big story can be time consuming." Its name is reminiscent of something out of a 1950s horror movie. "Try a company like HP or Dell. It's all relative. I think one thing that Apple does well is replace stuff at the Apple store. My friend Rick Calvert of Blogworld Expo posted a note last night asking Should Bloggers blacklist PR firms? His starting point for his article is an earlier note by Stowe Boyd, The Growing Backlash against PR, Spam and the Rationale for MicroPR . He in turn points to Gina Trapani, who has created a PR Spammers Wiki , where "she and others can publicly 'out' PR firms that are spamming Bloggers or using other unsavory spammish practices." I find this entire sequence of vigilante justice, as embodied in the concept of "outing" being applied to this situation, ridiculous. On the one hand, I constantly hear Bloggers and other so-called new media journalists complaining that corporations and public relations firms aren't taking them seriously and then we get this sort of daft misbegotten idea where if a PR firm doesn't meet the ideal of interaction with a blogger, they can be digitally tarred and feathered. I also get a lot of email from PR agencies, some of which is lame and poorly targeted, but much of which is interesting and worth receiving. When I get something I don't like, I send a one line note akin to "Not my beat, please drop me from this list" and it's done, no problem, no foul, no tar, no feathers. When I get a query that attracts my attention, I appreciate the ability to type in a quick reply without having to dig up a contact person (they've already sent the message) and engage in a dialog with the pr agent o ...
