Why it might be a killer The service’s simplicity should appeal to people who are new to the world of list management on the internet. Some questions When will the premium service be set available? Will people opt to pay for something they can get for free? In their own words “Whether you use Excel or a database today, Blist is the best choice for easily creating and sharing lists on the web.” What it does If you are a user of databases, then you should consider seeing what Blist.com has to offer. With this site, you’ll be able to quickly import your databases with a drag and drop format. The thing that makes the site stick out is the simplicity of the process. You don’t even have to create an account to try out service. The service transcends the business realm. You can organize and share information that’s important to your non-business lifestyle. You can make anything from a grocery list to a client manager, so there really is no aspect of your life left untouched by this site. The client is really easy to use, so there should be no reason why you should not at least try it out to see what it has to offer. In the future, the site plans to have a premium version of the service that’ll be ad-free and have almost unlimited storage. OK, it’s taken me a few weeks, but I finally have a chance to highlight a couple of entries in a local blog I’ve been following. It’s from the guys at Blist, a Seattle startup that makes Web-based software that lets people manage large lists and databases as easily as a spreadsheet. That may not [...] ...

At Blist, we think about three core scenarios as relates to working with data: getting data in; analyzing, massaging, querying and generally working with data when it’s in Blist; and getting data out. We’re happy to introduce Blist PDF printing via this blog post. It’s a big help in the “getting data out” category. For those [...] ...

We submitted an important idea for a panel discussion at the South By Southwest Conference (SXSW) – this needs to happen – and you need to help by voting for it now. Part of the way that SXSW designs their program is from community voting through their Panel Picker, so we need your help. Blist is all [...] ...

Some of you know that one of my passions is wine. My wife and I try to visit one of the wine regions once or twice year for some relaxation and wine tasting. Lately that has meant visiting Oregon’s Willamette Valley or the Napa/Sonoma region of California. Some day when we have a little more [...] ...

Some people like to keep their data private. Others like to let it all hang out. Blist is a free online database and spreadsheet application designed mostly for people who like to display data in public. The publicly inclined might use this (somewhat buggy) beta service to display their favorite movies or recipes, their ratings of their classmates' looks or intelligence, or anything else that can appear in a spreadsheet-style format, including pictures, ratings, Web addresses, and more. Blist looks like a spreadsheet but can also act like a database, by letting you create "lenses" on your data. You could, for example, display all your recipes that include hot peppers, or all your friends who live in Canada. Databases are public by default, but can be set to be visible only to yourself or to friends whom you invite to view or edit the data.... Read "Blist beta"... ...

There are many applications on the web that are made for collecting and storing data. Today we’re taking a look at a bunch of different web-based databases that you might find useful for everything from client records to details about the vaccinations each of your thirteen dogs have had in the last few years. Whatever tickles your fancy. Blist Blist ’s goal is to fool you into forgetting that underneath the glossy interface, there’s a relational database that the average user doesn’t know much about. I’ve always though that a great interface with average features is better than an app with great features and an average interface. I’m not talking aesthetics, either—but if something is designed well enough that it saves me both time and stress, I’m happy. In terms of interface, Blist works somewhat like everyone’s favorite basic database, the spreadsheet. Displays are filtered using what’s called a lens —that and the form designer make it clear that Blist’s goal is to create “the database for the rest of us.” Wufoo Wufoo isn’t so much about a database that you populate: it’s a service that allows you to create quite attractive HTML forms so you can collect information from visitors to your site, without needing to learn a programming language to do it. The advantages of an easy-to-use form designer is obvious in business when you wish to collect as much information from customers and clients as possible. In your personal life, a vari ...

In my previous life at Microsoft we had a mandate to be customer focused and very few people knew what it meant. So, every dev, PM, GM and tester would focus on the usual suspects: Usability studies, customer surveys, customer feedback/support, etc.     The problem really occurred when they started using customer touch points to justify pet features. Kevin Merritt Jon Byrum from Blist does a good job of describing "confirmation bias" and why it's dangerous .     But I think Jon misses an even bigger point. Whenever you talk about customer you have to define "what a customer is". Let me be clear, is Kevin talking about "existing customers" or "prospect customers" ("desired customers")?.     The problem with listening to your existing customer base if you are a consumer startup is that you are not listening to the other tens of thousands of people that decided *not* to use your product. Or to the millions of people that are part of your target audience and that are not aware of your product yet.     The big issue with existing early stage consumer startup customers is that they are early adopters (ahead of the curve) and they are using a product that is likely to shift directions significantly over its initial 2-3 years of life. So why on Earth are their opinion so important?     Listening to existing customer base is only worth if you already have a established business and is shipping version 3 or later of your product. Ok, maybe ...

On Wednesday, Greg highlighted the provocative suggestion of Kevin Merritt, CEO of Seattle startup Blist, that Microsoft should return to its “risk taking, entrepreneurial roots…” by investing in early-stage startups along the lines of the Y Combinator model. We’ve been updating Blist pretty often lately. Most of the changes have been minor and subtle or subterranean. We haven’t called them out. When Quizno’s first became a true mass-market brand, they anchored their advertising message on the “MMMM…Toasty” slogan (the slogan has changed over the years).
