The Current Discussion: A London publishing house was firebombed for agreeing to publish 'The Jewel of Medina', a controversial novel about Muhammad's wife, which Random House dropped earlier this year because it feared terrorist threats. In hindsight, was Random House in the right? Does this justify censorship of this kind in the future? I am totally for free speech and have always spoken for it, and yet there are times when I have to use my conscience as a humanist to question when free speech is deliberately aimed at offending the sensitivities of communities and religious people. I would agree that religious people should be calm and not be too offended, especially by attacks that are clearly inconsequential to the essence of their faith, there must still be a measure of responsibility when we deal with historical elements and facts and their subsequent treatment into literary fiction. To argue that only Muslims are offended by Blasphemy would be wrong, considering that even Christian nations have banned so-called literary works that have offended their faith. The recent controversy over the book on Aisha the favorite wife of Prophet Muhammad is a case in point. I have not read the book, so I have to rely on what various commentators who have read it has said thus far. When Prof Denise Spellberg made the point that the book is distorting historical fact to the point of creating soft pornography, I am tempted then to argue tha ...

Good heavens, has poll-fuelled Tory triumphalism inspired reckless disrespect for liberal institutions? Are Catholic traditionalists preparing a Saint Bartholomew's Day for their atheist opponents? Iain Martin, in his blog, and Damian Thompson, in The Catholic Herald, have launched an attack on one of Britain's national treasures - Polly Toynbee - that can only be described, in the ultimate terminology of liberal censure, as unhelpful. There is no precedent ... ...

I recently finished an interesting book: "Blasphemy:How the Religious Right is Hijacking Our Declaration of Independence" by Alan Dershowitz. That is, he refutes, point by point, attempts by Christian fundamentalists to rewrite the history of our nation's founding by claiming that the Founding Fathers were all orthodox Christians who never intended the separation of church and state, but rather founded the USA as a "Christian Nation". This short book contains three long chapters. The first chapter examines the beliefs of the Founding Fathers, focusing on the decidedly not Christian Thomas Jefferson, quoting extensively from his writings. The views of John Adams, George Washington, Ben Franklin, Thomas Paine, and others are also covered in lesser detail. The first chapter also looks at the God-language that was used by the Founders though the lens of Deism, which many of the Founding Fathers, including Jefferson, believed in. Dershowitz shows that the "Nature's God" that is referred to is not the Judeo-Christian God of the Bible, but rather, a "Blind Watchmaker" Creator, who created the universe then stepped back and let nature take its course. He goes into more detail as to how Deism and Universalism differs from today's conservative evangelical Christianity. The second chapter covers the Religious Right's strategy for making the Founding Fathers over in their image and their plans to turn the US into a theocracy. He asserts that thei ...

As web developers we do a lot of browser testing. It would be nice if everyone used the same browser (Firefox 3, for example) but they don’t. Believe it or not, there are still people out there who are using Firefox 2, which is why we need a way to install and run this now outdated web browser. Unfortunately, Firefox does not make this easy. read more ...

When two of your favorite artists endorse a fellow musician, you take notice. Scott Avett (of the Avett Bros) and Dan Auerbach (of The Black Keys) sing the praises of this singer (the ladder produced her debut which comes out 9-16). Not only do Scott and Dan dig them, two of my favorite bloggers Heather and Bruce have also giving Jess two thumbs up. Jessica Lea Mayfield has a haunting voice that uses reverb as well as Jim James. With Blasphemy, So Heartfelt (which is the perfect title for the album) is a melancholy collection of songs that would be perfect for a touching moment on a television drama. Sonically, Jess doesn’t get too far away from the sound of the song below. Which is why I think Mayfield should become a hit in the music blogoweb.
