Hi All, I have three different clusters, one based on HP BL465c Servers, another is based on HP DL385 G1 Servers and a DR one based on HP BL460c Servers The BL465c and BL460s's are running ESX 3.5 U2, build 110268, the DL385s are still on U1, build 110181. On the BL465c's I'm getting no Health Status information (under Configuration). For the DL385s I'm getting some very basic info and for the BL460c Servers I'm getting a lot of detail, termperature etc. Checking a bit more, the BL465c and BL460c Servers are running the hp-openIPMI driver as part of the HP Agents suite, the DL385's are not. All are running the same version of the HP Agents (8.1) but I'm not sure if this is used by the Health status. Anyone any ideas why the Health data should be so inconsistent between the different Servers? Any way of getting the BL465c Servers to show up in the Health Configuration or is this an AMD vs Intel Issue as regards data available? Does the amount of information returned change between ESX 3.5 U1 and U2? TIA Rob. ...

AMD today announced that Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors exclusively power the innovation behind the worlds first Blade server designed specifically to eliminate performance bottlenecks for virtual server hosting, the HP ProLiant BL495c virtualization Blade. Businesses requiring the flexibility to support more virtual machines per server can now choose from a broad suite of Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor-based Servers from HP, ranging from blades to high-performance multi-processor platforms. With todays launch of the HP ProLiant BL495c, 35 systems based on Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors are now shipping from global OEMs. Businesses continue to face memory and I/O constraints as they implement virtualization solutions across more mission-critical workloads, said Patrick Patla, general manager, Server and Workstation Business, AMD. The Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor has once again proved to be the processor of choice in helping alleviate these demands. With Direct Connect Architecture and AMD-Virtualization technology (AMD-V), the Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor is shaping the direction of virtualization by empowering IT managers with more virtual machines and leading x86 virtualization performance. ...

We need to purchase a more robust setup for our work. I was planning on setting up a SAN boot using raid 10 with a Blade server. We only have a few Microsoft server licenses. I was wondering if I can pool the Blade Servers together with one os to provides multiple hardware redundancy. I think vmware has a program that does this. Do I have to purchase a program to do this or is there a better way. I am looking to have a 100% uptime with our solution. I was thinking that it would be best if I could install 2008 standard and use hyper v to run our sbs 2003 premium services with exchange and our other os's as well. If you can't pool them together, is my best hardware redundancy option to boot images from the san and boot the server image from another Blade if one goes down. Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me. Mike ...

As more companies move to virtual machines and Blade Servers to reduce space and costs, there are few mentions of the downside or 'dark side' of virtualizing hardware and operating systems. I spoke with Bob Waldie, CEO and founder of Opengear , an open source out-of-band management services provider, about the problems associated with the adoption of blades and VMs. Q: So why do you think that virtualization is such a problem? A: The dark side of virtualization is the complexity of the environment it creates. While server virtualization improves flexibility and asset utilization, it also adds complexity to the environment, specifically by adding an extra hypervisor layer to the operating and management load and creating complicated virtual appliances and virtualized I/O. For example, when the enterprise VPN network is routed through software VPN appliances running on virtual Servers and then migrated to virtual machines, the connection of the virtual machines back to the LAN presents a new layer of management challenges. Q: Well, what are these new management challenges? A: For the vast majority of enterprises, virtualization coexists with physical deployments and data center managers need tools to managing both physical and virtual environments. However, in addition to needing new virtual management tools, the added network complexity means the tools that previously used to manage the physical infrastructure pre-virtualization a ...

Today, IBM announced its latest [ BladeCenter S ] with integrated redundant SAN fabric and disk storage inside the chassis. The tag line is "Data Center Capability, without the Data Center!" I've gotten a few calls on this today, so I thought it would be good to blog about. To understand what is new, you need to understand what we had in other BladeCenter chassis. In those other chassis, there were up to 14 Blade Servers on the front, and switch modules for FCP and Ethernet on the back. The entire chassis was rack-mounted to be connected to external devices. The BladeCenter S was announced a year ago. With the new "BladeCenter S" chassis, the storage can be included inside the chassis, as well as connecting to the outside world. It is designed to be stand-alone, rather than rack-mounted, plugs into a standard 100v-240v office power outlet, and includes a dust filter in case you keep it close to the floor, under your desk for example. Click graphic at left for 4-minute video introduction. (Here's also a more detailed [ 7-minute video ] with fellow IBM colleague Alex Yost.) Here's what you can get with the BladeCenter S: Up to six(6) server blades that can do the work of 25-45 traditional Servers. Up to two(2) storage blades, each can have six(6) SAS or SATA disk drive modules (DDMs) Up to four(4) switch modules, with a variety to choose from Shared KVM, DVD/CD burner, and USB port. You can designate which Blade has access to these, usef ...

BI's Cell-based video encoder speeds compression : At the recent International Broadcasters Conference (September 11-16, 2008, Amsterdam), Broadcast International demo'd the CodecSys AVC system , its QS21 Blade Cell/B.E.-based broadcast-quality video encoder. The company claims the combination of its software and the Cell/B.E. hardware can deliver up to six times the video compression available with MPEG2. One immediate application comes to mind -- resolving the bandwidth-limitation problems of delivering HD transmissions over limited capable carriers. Due to QS21 Blade design, the system should be scalable to any level. [ QS21 | QS22 ] Too ... many ... Servers! [Thanks to William Shatner] Blade Servers on the review chopping block : This ServerWatch review's major complaint is that IBM has too much of a good thing -- too many Servers. In this installment, the author provides a good over-review of IBM BladeCenter products. It's one of those rare, fast looks at a range of products that could help potential customers quickly zero in on the one that meets their needs. Green and HPC: Is the color the new secret to fast? : This Linux Magazine article discusses the potential convergeance of green and high performance computing into "Green HPC" -- a phrase in which "HPC" remains the same but "green" means "optimized." The article kicks around some ways you can present greening your HPC system as cost effective (hint: That which decreases power/cooling costs automatically decreases the price-to-performance ratio). The author also makes several suggestions to improve efficiency in HPC systems: To green the server .... Using off-the-shelf components and server packages is already a good start because most vendors are ahead of you in greening efforts. But you can exert a verdant control over power supplies by using Power Factor Correction (PFC) supplies for higher efficiency. You can leverage the scheduler via dynamic frequency control, kicking down operations on idle processors. Ditto for hard drives and power-down modes. You can control physical job placement with the scheduler, emigrating jobs to cooler areas of the machine room. To green the rack .... More efficient rack mounting can help too. Blade systems are kinda designed to share fans and power supplies to reduce the number of those devices. DC-based Servers (server and storage systems come equipped with a high efficiency -48VDC power supply) mean less heat to deal with. Let a little air in .... A recent test showed that only using refrigerated or ...
