This white paper, authored by IDC, explores the problems confronting IT organizations today as they seek to bring data together from disparate sources in order to achieve better information coherence, operational efficiency, and more effective overall governance. Specifically, the paper considers the problems posed by the complexity of "data integration" technology in terms of its configuration and maintenance. It looks at the utility of a grid computing approach in providing scalability and manageability for "data integration" and considers how an appliance approach, with its pre-configured hardware and software, can further reduce cost and risk for customers, by taking the effort and guess work out of setting up a "data integration" platform. This paper considers the solution offered by IBM, first with respect to the Information Server technology, and then with its appliance offering, the Information Server Blade. ...

Filed under: Realm News , Realm Status , News items , Hardware The Ruin Battlegroup of the European servers will be getting a new English language PvE Server named Blade's Edge, Thundgot has announced . It will be a completely new realm, which means no transfers allowed for the first few months. In addition, the Ahn'Qiraj gates will be closed -- which means this is your chance to get a group over there and start powerleveling toward the Qiraji battle tank and the Scarab Lord title. Apparently, some people have been complaining about queue times in the Ruin battlegroup for some time, so hopefully this should ease those problems once people get on and start leveling. The Server will open today at 17:00 Paris time. Good luck to everyone who decides to reroll there! Update: Strike that, it looks like they decided to let the it go live right after maintenance. Thanks for the heads up, Roelof. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments ...

Even though Blade servers currently represent the fastest growing segment of the Server market, research firm Gartner says deployments will be limited in the next few years. Indeed, the expectation is that it will take about three years before Blade servers will make up 20 percent of the market, which would be up from the 10 percent in 2007. This is a direct result of a lack of clear standards, incurred in part by rapid changes in the technology. Organizations that derive value from the deployment of Blade servers should go ahead, though they need to be prepared for further changes as this market segment matures. Another change to look for down the road will be the upscaling of input and output connectors beyond the current 10Gb bottleneck experienced by most solutions. Better technology and standards for more fine-grained management, as well as a prioritization of bandwidth and memory between individual blades running off the same chassis also should be expected.
