You might think there'd be a period of National sporting mourning here for Liu Xiang (China's most famous sportsman, who pulled out of the 110m hurdles on Monday) - Black drapes placed across his many advertisement, vigils on the street, a ban on public displays of affection, that kind of thing. But China's far too busy inhaling gold medals to get depressed by Liu Xiang's departure. This country has won more gold than it has ever won before at a single games. Tonight, I watched He Chong win the men's 3m springboard diving (a terrifying event to watch - since you spend your time in the crowd worrying that the divers will smash their heads on the diving board when they come twisting down from the sky). But He Chong made it look easy. He carried a series of perfect dives, he bowed politely, and won the gold. The crowd cheered loyally - and everyone sang the National Anthem together when the Chinese flag was raised above the pool. I've been studying the victory poses of Chinese athletes at these Games . From what I can tell, a winning Chinese gold medallist essentially has three choices... 1) Humble servant - winner hugs coach, cries, stands politely on the podium, wells up a bit more, insists modestly that everyone else is responsible for his/her victory. exemplified by most of China's first-time gold medal winners. 2) Rock star - winner yells with joy, punches the air, nearly demolishes coach with hugs, throws clothes and equipment into ... Filed under: Viral Video , Race On July 1, at the Mayor of Denver's annual state of the city address, a local singer named Rene Marie stood before the crowd, eager to hear "The Star Spangled Banner," the US' National Anthem. Instead, she sang this: The song, " Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing ," is the official African American National Hymn. The singer used the tune from "The Star Spangled Banner." The singer explained her act: (from The LA Times ) It was, Marie later said of the unpaid gig, an artistic expression of her emotions about being a Black American and a decision she made months ago to no longer sing the National Anthem. But instead of telling that to the mayor's office beforehand, "I pulled a switcheroonie on them," Marie told the Denver Post. An event like this beautifully showcases what is so great about America, the freedom to disagree, loud and long and clear. There are many, I'm sure, who will condemn this act as the worst atrocity ever committed against liberty, others will see it as a cheap, distasteful publicity grab, while still others will admire the singer's act of defiance. What this story immediately stirred in me was a memory from my childhood. I grew up in a predominantly Black town, and we used to sing " We Shall Overcome " regularly at school events and such, along with other songs common to these events. When my family moved to an all-white suburb, I never heard the song again. Early on, I asked someone abou ...

Sheryl Crow also reported to perform at convention's final night. By Jocelyn Vena John Legend at the DNC in Denver Monday Photo: Justin Sullivan/Getty Images will perform at the Democratic National Convention in Denver on Thursday (August 28), the final night of the event, at which Barack Obama will accept the Democratic presidential nomination, CNN reports. The Denver Post reports that John Legend will also entertain the convention-goers. The performances are expected to take place at Invesco Field at Mile High. It's also being reported that Will.I.Am will recreate his now famous "Yes We Can" video live with a full gospel choir. Earlier this week, MTV News caught up with the Black Eyed Peas rapper, who discussed how important Obama's speech is, not only for supporters, but for Americans. "This speech is important because the time is important," he said. "It's important, 'cause it's engaging the people who have supported him. "There's people who are going to be skeptical," he added, "but with the momentum of the victory, that's going to propel us up the hill. It's beyond just Black and white. It's American — and I'm just happy to be here." Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson will sing the National Anthem at the final night of the convention, according to CNN. Sheryl Crow, who is currently on tour, is expected to perform three songs early in the evening before hitting the stage at the Les Schwab Amphitheater in Bend, Oregon, for her own ... The image lasted for only as long as it took to play the National Anthem -- yet it still resonates four decades later. --- BAM meets Beijing--- The Beijing Olympics are off with a bang. Red and white fireworks criss-cross the stadium as the crowd cheers. One thousand men beat on large square drums. White lights flash off the drums with each beat. A young girl in red steps forward and sings the Chinese patriotic song Five Stars as the crowd waves tens of thousands of red National flags. The guard raises the main standard as the military band play the National Anthem. The majority of the audience is clearly Chinese as a good part of stadium is chanting along to this not-very-catchy tune. Now the birds nest stadium goes dark and a white scroll emerges from the center. As it unfurls the letters are made up of dancers in Black. Pilobolus would be proud. This ceremony is clearly going to focus on Chinese themes - this is not an international mosaic but an exploration of how and why China got to where it is today. Zhang Yimou, the creative director, is veering off-piste from past opening ceremonies. Gone are the tacky, shiny costumes and trite melodies. In this display, BAM meets Beijing, or rather crashes into it. Now the ceremony take a bend towards conceptual art. Dancers dressed as quills move onto the floor as book-like structures undulate in the center of the stadium. I will leave the surprise here to your viewing. This display quickly morphs into five hundred dancers who each hold a blade of a magnificent fan. As the blades come together they depic ... Source: www.npr.org --- 59 days ago

Andrew Greeley's column in today's Chicago Sun-Times is "American warmongers excel at talking a good game." Greeley's writings are often unintentionally amusing, filled with the sort of kneejerk liberalism we'd expect from a Barack Obama contributor . This morning's article is typically hilarious: If we chant "USA!" Often enough, sing God "Bless American!" fervently enough, wear flag pins, fly the flag in front of our house and croak the National Anthem loudly enough, we will win victory and honor our dead heroes. Who are those who reject compromise of a useless and criminally deadly war like Iraq? They are the blusterers, members of "veteran's organizations," mountain folk, crackers, West Texans, blue collar workers, evangelical clergy, neo-cons, Republicans, white ethnics, Sox fans, folks who want Cardinal George to "get rid" of Father Pfleger, those who tell you with a straight face that the country isn't ready yet for a Black president and that the United States must rid itself of "illegal aliens." (I hasten to add that all these groups number some men and women who are innocent of bellicose patriotism.) There's something about the American flag that drives liberals loonier than usual. It certainly must irritate them that candidate Obama has been forced to sport a flag pin just to fool the crackers, the blue collar workers, etc. I'm not certain why he placed quotation marks around "veteran's organizations." Is that not what th ... Source: www.myrtlebeachonline.com --- 9 days ago
