13th Annual Black Potatoe Music Festival Deadline: Mar 27, 2009 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time The 13th Annual Black Potatoe Music Festival, New Jersey's premier independent Music festival, will be held at The Stanhope House in Stanhope, NJ, July 9-12, 2009. Without catering to Music industry trends, the Black Potatoe Music Festival has presented diverse acts from the national, regional, and local levels. The one rule is that you must be an independent artist or on an indie label (Rock and Roll Hall of Famers and side projects are the only exceptions). There are 15 reserved slots for Sonicbids artists. Every artist is given great promotion through radio, print, and internet outlets in the New Jersey, New York and Eastern Pennsylvania markets. Black Potatoe's merchandise team will sell your products for you at the festival. Because of the festival's central location between New York City (60 miles) and Philadelphia (75 miles), this is a great way to route other dates in the region. The opportunity for compensation is available, but not all artists will be paid. The festival, which originally began in 1997 by the artist-owned independent label Black Potatoe Records as a CD release party for the group Angus, has blossomed into a multi-day, two-stage, multi-act event. Austin Texas. For anyone who’s been there, the town represents good food, good people, better artists and even better Music. The Black and White Years and this, their freshman effort will have you believing that it could also be the pulse of new “modern” Music. Housed within these 11 tracks is a sound rooted in the halcyon days of 1979 CBGB nurtured with equal parts of 1982 Manchester — and the processor that brings it all together so convincingly had to be built in 2006. At once, you catch glimpses of seasoned “Talking Heads” and faint glimmers of “Ocean Colour Scene,” but the melding of these with modern sensibilities brings us a sound as fresh as yesterday’s grapes. Having only just formed in 2006, the core four are Scott Butler, vocals and guitar; Landon Thompson, vocals and guitar/keyboards; John Aldridge bass and brass; and finally, doing the duties on the skins, is Billy Potts. Butler, Thompson, and Aldridge all met while attending Belmont University in Nashville. It would be difficult to prove which wielded the bigger influence on the the band, academia or the riveting sounds found in some of the better Nashville roadhouses. “Electronic,” being an obvious influence here, tends to frame the Music rather than define it. An equal measure of reggae beats and vocals that are both punchy and cerebral give these tunes huge potential for mainstream appeal. Time to stop tapping my foot and run the spell check!
