(Pictured: The Constantines ASSOCIATED PRESS) FRIDAY Tribute to Ronnie Dawson at the Continental Club .The Blonde Bomber, who died of throat cancer in 2003 at age 64, was one of the most beloved acts in the history of the Continental, ranking up there with Alejandro Escovedo, Toni Price, Redd Volkaert and Southern Culture on the Skids. This will be a night of utmost rockabilly respect, with the Jungle Rockers and Nick Curran, plus Dawson’s A-Team of Tjarko Jean, Shaun Young, Kevin Smith and Lisa Pankratz playing for the Waxahachie Wildman with the soul of gold. $10. — Michael Corcoran Also recommended Animal Collective at Stubb’s New York Dolls, Black Joe Lewis at Emo’s Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy at the Mohawk Dale Watson at the Broken Spoke Radio La Chusma at Flamingo Cantina Alejandro Escovedo at Antone’s VAST at Elysium Ladyfinger, the Archibalds at Beerland SATURDAY Constantines at Emo’s . Hard rockers Mudvayne [ tickets ] and Black Label Society [ tickets ] will take to the road this summer atop the roster of the inaugural "Pedal to the Metal" tour. Scheduled to kick off in late July, the outing will also feature Static-X [ tickets ] , Suicide Silence, Dope and Bury Your Dead, as well as the "extremely twisted Hellzapoppin sideshow review, performing during set changes throughout the evening," according to a press release. Tickets for the 30-plus dates on the itinerary (shown below) will be available to each band's fan-club members beginning next Wednesday (6/10) via a pre-sale at the tour's soon-to-be-launched website , which goes live that same day. The general public will get their first crack at tickets beginning June 12, according to organizers. "The tour started as a summer tour with us and Black Label Society, but as we started fleshing out ideas, it transformed into this really cool concept," Mudvayne frontman Chad Gray said in a prepared statement. "We're really excited, because this package is a merging of great bands, good people and f---ing amazing fans. It'll be great to bring them all together." "I was looking forward to a full throttle assault with just Mudvayne this summer, but when Chad said ‘Let's do more,' I was all-in," BLS singer/guitarist Zakk Wylde added. "On behalf of JD, Craig, Nick, the Doom Crew Inc. and myself, we can't wait to see our Black Label family and the entire Black Label nation ...

The music Phil Elverum has made over the years hasn't been that far removed from that of, say, Xasthur . The man behind the Microphones and Mount Eerie shares a few predilections with underground Black Metal: creeped -out lo- fi atmospherics, otherworldly despair, the sense that we're dealing with a fragile loner desperate to keep the rest of the world out. Doesn't hurt that the man's last name sounds like some Lord of the Rings sub-species, either. Last year, Elverum made the connection a little more concrete with his Black Wooden Ceiling Opening EP , the first release where he explicitly experimented with Black Metal dynamics. The result, especially the bottomlessly sad opener "Appetite", made for some one of the most hypnotically wracked music of Elverum's career. On August 18, Elverum will blow that experiment out to album length when P.W. Elverum & Sun releases Mount Eerie's Wind's Poem , which is being touted as his "Black Metal album." Elverum recorded the album himself in various locations around his hometown of Anacortes , Washington. Nick Krgovich of No Kids dropped by to add some harmonies, but as with most Microphones/Mount Eerie releases, this is basically all Elverum here. That's the cover above, and the tracklist is below. The album will be available on CD, digital download, or a clear vinyl double LP in "a gatefold jacket with bronze foil stamping and a pull out lyric poster". One of those options sounds slightly ...

Black Metal has made it into video games. This first foray actually looks promising: Undead Knights , by Tecmo, out this fall. The player's objective is to build an army of zombies — the fast kind, evidently — to fight humans. How awesome is that? I am not familiar with video games, and promo animations are more high-powered than actual gameplay. However, the above trailer is enticing. It's hard to go wrong with armies of the undead. (See Army of Darkness .) Lightning Swords of Death - Invoke the Desolate One Valdur - Blodhevn / Vendetta Even better, the game will have a Metal soundtrack. It looks not to be the usual major label B-side snoozefest. The first two acts announced for it are über-kvlt: Lightning Swords of Death and Valdur . They put out an absolutely killer split last year. It's hard to believe these guys are from SoCal. This stuff is killer! Lightning Swords of Death bring a bestial attack, with jabbing and piercing guitars. Valdur are also delightfully ugly, but more atmospheric. Yet who listens to splits now? Licensing music is the way forward. So much media now needs soundtracks — films, video games, multimedia art. Moby licensed out every track from Play . It's time to fight back! Norwegian Black metallers Gorgoroth recently spent time at Threeman Recordings in Stockholm with producer Nico Elgstrand ( Entombed ). During the sessions, Gorgoroth frontman Pest replaced Gaahl 's vocals for the "True Norwegian Black Metal - Live in Grieghallen" album, which was originally released in June 2008 via Regain Records . According to a posting on the group's web site, Gorgoroth mainman Infernus (guitar) "has already consulted legal representatives regarding this album, and is prepared to support Regain Records in the label's ongoing legal conflict with two of the band's ex-members, if any such support is needed." The recording of Gorgoroth 's new studio album "Quantos Possunt ad Satanitatem Trahunt" is proceeding on schedule, with a tentative October 2009 release date. The album will be made available via Sweden's Regain Records . The 2009 incarnation of Gorgoroth consists of Pest (vocals), Infernus (guitar), Tormentor (guitars), Frank Watkins (bass) and Tomas Asklund (drums). Infernus recently won a court battle against vocalist Gaahl and bassist King ov Hell over the rights to the Gorgoroth band name. According to a posting on Infernus ' MySpace page, "The court has decided that King ov Hell 's trademark registration of the band name Gorgoroth is Not valid and shall therefore be deleted. The court states that King ov Hell and Gaahl excluded themselves from the band Gorgoroth when they tried to fire Infernus in October 20 ...

Castevet has been around the NYC scene since 2007 and the band just released their debut 7", "Stones/Salts", on Paragon Records in March '09. This disc is an impressively packaged clear vinyl 7" (check out the picture below) that is limited to 300 copies. Castevet's next show is at Market Hotel on August 21 and they are sharing the bill with Tombs, Batillus, & Liturgy. Tickets are $10 and will probably go quickly. INTERVIEW BrooklynRocks : What’s the deal with Castevet? The band seems to play out only once every few months and there is almost no information about the band on the Internet. Ian : My name is Ian, and I play drums. Andrew is our guitarist, and Josh is our bassist. To give a brief biographical overview, Castevet has been in existence since late 2006. “Stones/Salts”, our debut 7”, was completed in February 2008. The release of the 7” was delayed due to financial issues. Also during 2008, we encountered some personal differences with our original bassist, Dan. We ended up parting ways with him around March of 2008. Things became uncertain for a few months as a result of these issues, so Andrew and I collectively decided to defer live shows until all of our cards were on deck. We spent the rest of the year focusing on writing for our full length. “Stones/Salts” was released in March 2009, and our new bassist Josh joined in February 2009. BrooklynRocks : Your music has both a lot of complexity and subtle nuances. Can you descr ...

Nuclear War Now! is selling two mystery Black Metal 7"s. ( #1 , #2 ) Their descriptions: Released by WTC. Can't read the band names . Logos so unreadable even metallers can't read them! It's hilarious that a shop wouldn't know what it's selling (or that people might pay for unknown objects). I can imagine Yosuke NWN opening a box from WTC , looking for a shipping manifest, not finding one, scratching his head over these 7"s, and then just throwing them up on the site. Actually, after some sleuthing, I figured out what they were. I almost don't want to reveal their identities, so that they can stay mystery Black Metal 7"s. But they're so obscure that even with names, they're still mysteries. #1 is Satanic Mentality , a split between Kathaarian (Ger) and Norns . #2 is Worshippers of Evil / Die , a split between Annihilation 666 and Bliss of Flesh . I have zero inclination to track down audio clips, but you can probably guess what they sound like. Buy: Mystery Black Metal 7" #1 Mystery Black Metal 7" #2 ...

There is no shortage of documentaries on the infamous Norwegian Black Metal scene, but it seems until now there has yet to be one that gathered together the figures that truly mattered on film, and got the key players in the movement to speak without censoring themselves. Filmmakers Audrey Ewell and Aaron Aites have pulled off the nearly impossible task of penetrating the inner circle of a very secular scene with their new documentary, Until The Light Takes Us . Moving from their homebase of New York city to Norway for two years, Ewell and Aites have not only put together what looks to be the most cohesive and fleshed out documentary on the subject, but have also made something that is much more beautiful to look at than it’s counterparts, which all seem to suffer from a VH-1 Behind The Music asthetic. The fact that Varg Vikernes , of the one man band Burzum, incarcerated for years after being found guilty of arson and murder, appears in the film is no small feat. He has, until now, refused to take part in any of the aforementioned films on the subject. As co-director Ewell put it “Making a Black Metal documentary without Varg is like making a Rolling Stones documentary without Mick Jagger.” While one may or may not appreciate the genre of true Black Metal, one thing is for sure, the sociological apsect of the movement is as deep as anything that has occured in rock and roll. Moving from the psuedo Satanic stance of its origins to a N ...
