Axxana emerged from “stealth mode” today at Storage Networking World with the introduction of its unique Enterprise Data Recording (EDR) technology. Axxana’s innovation is the first-ever to enable 100% disaster recovery with no data loss, over any geographical distance; all with significant cost savings. Axxana’s first EDR system combines the data-recovery certainties of synchronous replication with the distance and cost advantages of asynchronous replication. The result is a complete shift in the way enterprises will architect their data-center strategies. A new Israeli startup named Axxana has just come out of stealth mode with a 400-pound Black Box device it says can survive fires of up to 1,700 degrees Fahrenheit, an earthquake, immersion in water, and up to 500 pounds of pressure. Called the Phoenix, the Box is fitted with a wireless modem and requisite internal power supply so that data can be wirelessly retrieved even if it is physically inaccessible in the wake of a disaster. Built into the Phoenix is technology that Axxana developed to bridge the gap that exists between off-site synchronous and asynchronous mirroring. By storing data that was dropped as a result of latency, the company essentially breaks the current 45 mile limit inherent to synchronous mirroring. The Phoenix will cost in the range of "six figures...but not seven." For more on the Phoenix: - check out this NetworkWorld article ... Source: majordc.com --- 1 hour ago

I purchased an HP 3600n Color LaserJet back in August. This was in a retail unopened Box. It said it came with four full toners, not sample cartridges. A few days ago all of a sudden yellow and magenta dropped to 15% and 18% while the Black and cyan are at 96% I've printed 260 pages out of these toners. I called up HP and after a few people I get to some guy who I can barely understand and he puts me on hold for about 30 mins and comes back to say the research department told him that there is an issue with the toners telling you they are almost empty when they are not. His solution: Keep on printing. I argue if its broken fix it, so he puts me on hold again and comes back and has me go through a few prompts on the printer, resets and cold restarts etc.. Still not fixing the level. He still insists that they will tell me when it really falls below 15% and 18%. I asked him how do I know when its time to order a new toner before I run out, he said it will tell you, and I argue its telling me now! Nothing productive came out of this call. After I hang up I printed a few pages with some color and the percentages fell even lower. I think they gave me sample toners by mistake but as far as HP is concerned they said its the contact with the toner and printer that is faulty. The ultimate question: Is this plausible that both the yellow and magenta fall to 15% and 18% due to faulty chips or whatever on the cartridge while the cyan and Black ar ... The Free Software Foundation has added the following to its high priority list : Free software replacement for Skype Skype is a proprietary Voice-over-IP program that uses a proprietary protocol. Skype is seducing free software users into using proprietary software, often two users at a time. We do not want to encourage the creation of a Skype compatible client, but instead, we want to encourage you to create, contribute to, or promote the use of free software alternatives to Skype, such as Ekiga, and to encourage to adoption and use of free VoIP, video, and chat protocols such as SIP and XMPP/Jingle. Hmm, maybe this is why ? In the XMPP community we’ve been making quite a bit of progress lately on Jingle , so I’m looking forward to building open replacements for Black-Box technologies like Skype. Open is better. ... Source: www.mobile-tech-today.com --- 3 hours ago
A Silicon Valley company is claiming a major victory in its efforts to sell computers to schools that might otherwise be enticed by low-cost laptops such as the green-and-white XO from One Laptop Per Child or Intel Corp.'s Classmate PC. NComputing Inc. said Monday it would be providing computers in 5,000 schools in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Because of the particulars of NComputing's system, the company says 1.8 million students will have access to the machines to learn computing skills and productivity software. Redwood City, California-based NComputing Inc. uses a technology more common to server farms than rural schools to slash the cost of operating PCs. It's called virtualization -- a layer of software that lets many "virtual" computers run simultaneously on the power of a single souped-up desktop. In Andhra Pradesh, the government will install 10,000 computers and turn each into five virtual PCs. Each of those virtual NComputing workstations operates just like a standalone PC, except that the mouse, keyboard and monitor are hooked up to a small Black Box. That Box, in turn, is connected with a cable to a hub PC. NComputing says its system has yielded more than a million "seats" in schools and other organizations in less than two years, for as little as $70 per seat. One Laptop Per Child has said it has taken about 621,000 orders for its ballyhooed $188 computers, which have made their way to such developing countri ... Source: www.boxxet.com --- 9 hours ago

Brother, Can You Spare Some Time? The Smackdown . While the world today is transfixed by the impending bailout caused by scammers who put us on a path to economic meltdown, both "Paper Moon" and "The Sting" are about scammers who did their best work after it happened. Can you say Great Depression ? Can you say Great Depression II: The Sequel ? Anyway, there must have been something in the water out here in Hollywood in 1973 to have triggered two such comedies within six months of each other. Both films give us characters who believe that the system has already proved itself to be so rigged against the average guy that it's okay to lie, cheat and steal in order to get by. And they make it look good. These guys (and that little girl) would have killed on today's Wall Street. We'll give the "Defending Champion" designation to "The Sting" because it performed better at the Box office and start the rumble... The Challenger . Despite the above picture, "Paper Moon" which is based on Joe David Brown's novel "Addie Pray" was brought to the screen by writer Alvin Sargent and director Peter Bogdanovich in Black-and-white. It's best known because real-life father-daughter Ryan and Tatum O'Neal star together and she actually won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress (youngest to ever win). It's about a con job where the two of them team up to sell overpriced Bibles to unwitting widows (by claiming their husbands ordered them just before ... Source: www.fwicki.com --- 1 day ago

Identification filter. In the bottom of the photo inside, is a small container that I'm trying to identify. (warning, geek alert!) A few weeks ago on Ebay, I bought an amazing screen-used prop from Hellboy. Known as "Broom's Box" it's seen being consulted by Abe Sapien prior to Hellboy's encounter with Sammael in the museum, and it's the Box of trinkets, books and amulets in which Abe looks up the info on Abe Sapien. Still here? Anyway, the Box came mostly empty and I'm (because I'm a freak this way) trying to identify a piece of dressing in the Box, and my google fu has been failing me. In this photo: at the bottom right, just to the right of the brown glass bottle, and between it and the crystal wand, is a small container that looks kinda like a clove of garlic with a Black drum head on it. This is my quarry. Looks to me to be manufactured from a circle of leather, gathered up to make a crude vessel, and then covered with a thin Black leather or latex top that's cinched on. Other photos of this prop in the film reveal about 7 of these vessels scattered throughout the prop. Now I've been a prop maker. And so I know, I KNOW that this must be a found item that the propmaker liked. It's not rare, nor was it made specially for the film. I'm sure of that. If I had to fill this thing with trinkets, I'd allocate 1 day for shopping at a couple of antique stores (that would explain the salt-cured civil war era ink bottles) and other places I' ...
