A wave of Bittersweet melancholy has descended on the thousands of phishers, hackers and credit card swindlers inhabiting the computer crime supersite DarkMarket.ws . On Tuesday the site's operator, known as Master Splyntr, announced that he was shuttering the forum, which has hummed along for nearly three years as a premier vehicle of criminal commerce. "[R]ecent events have proven that even in our best efforts to expel and deactivate the accounts of suspected LE [law enforcement], reporters, and security agents, it is obvious that we haven't been entirely successful," Splyntr wrote in a message on the site. Chief among those recent events is last week's arrest of Cha0 , a Turkish hacker -- and alleged kidnapper -- who served as one of DarkMarket's administrators. Cha0 was known for selling high-quality ATM skimming hardware that crooks could affix to cash machines to grab debit card swipes and PINs. Turkish police arrested Cha0 on Friday, identifying him as one Cagatay Evyapan. DarkMarket administrator Cagatay Evyapan, a.k.a. Cha0, was arrested by Turkish police last week. Photo courtesy Haber7 "It is apparent that this forum … is attracting too much attention from a lot of the World services (agents of FBI, SS, and Interpol)," wrote Splyntr. "I guess it was only time before this would happen. It is very unfortunate that we have come to this situation, because ... we have established DM as the premier English speaking forum for ...

During nearly two weeks of “As Wachovia Turns,” the company's shareholders had experienced a range of emotions fit for a soap opera: Shock. Anger. Disappointment. Confusion. Relief. But now that Wells Fargo is moving forward with its deal to buy the Charlotte bank for about $5.43 per share as of Thursday, another word came to mind, at least for investor Mark Beck: Bittersweet. “I have a great sense of loss for Charlotte,” said Beck, a Charlotte businessman whose Wachovia stockholder Web site, wachoviavoteno.com, has attracted thousands of visits since it launched last week. “And as a shareholder, I think the company is worth more. But it's likely what we're going to get.” Shareholders said Thursday they were glad Citigroup would no longer fight for its widely criticized offer to buy most of Wachovia for $1 a share. And they were glad to gain some sense of resolution. However, the news also spelled the end of some shareholders' hope that Wachovia could remain independent. “It's the best of a bad World,” said John Burke, a Salisbury retiree who estimates that he's lost “in the five figures, and not in the low five figures,” on his Wachovia stock. Ever since the Citi-Wachovia deal was first announced, he said, he's felt like he had a “great big iron ball” in his stomach. He didn't know what to do or how to proceed. Now, there's a bit more clarity, but he's still resigned to the fact that his money is gone and won't be coming back – ...

Like many of you, I suspect, my mood today could delicately be described as Bittersweet, bordering on hysteria. It is not a pleasant sensation watching a sizable portion of one's stock holdings get atomized in a blink, vanishing into the twinkling void of "Money Heaven," to quote Richard Russell's fanciful phrase. Only a few months ago I was a retirement millionaire on paper. Now--not. According to fund manager John P. Hussman, never one to lose his analytical cool, the recent carnage is on the verge of creating investment value ("Stocks are certainly not "cheap" or undervalued overall, but they are no longer priced to deliver unacceptably poor long-term returns"), which may be small consolation, but at least isn't the end of the World. To James Howard Kunstler, never one to holster his analytical heat, it may not be the end of the World, but the transfiguration has begun: "We've entered the realm of phase change, where everything is slipping and nothing has settled. The final result, when the dust settles -- and that may not be for weeks to come -- will certainly be a poorer western World." Kunstler does offer one short-term sure bet: "The candidates' debate Tuesday night should be interesting. I don't expect too much give-and-take on the subject of East Ossetia this time around." Which brings me to the 'sweet' part of my Bittersweet hysteria. Even as I wave a farewell hankie at my investment holdings as they sink into the briny deep, ...

Perhaps it was fitting that after yesterday's disappointing last game of the season-- where the Mets's playoff chances evaporated -- a Bittersweet ceremony was held to say good-bye to Shea Stadium . The fans yelled at the Marlins, who reportedly took their time leaving the field, "Off the field, off the field, off the field." The Mets are moving to CitField next year , but savored memories of their two World Series Championships and beloved players and managers. Returning to the stadium were former Mets including Willie Mays, Dwight Gooden, Keith Hernandez, Jerry Koosman, Mike Piazza, Darryl Strawberry, John Franco, Robin Ventura, Lenny Dykstra, and Tom Seaver, who threw out the first pitch. Ed Kranepool, part of the 1969 team, told MLB.com, "It was sentimental for myself, since I do have records here at Shea Stadium. Most games, most hits -- which means I was on the field more than any other player. When they tear it down, as [former manager] Casey [Stengel] used to say, 'They take their records with them.'" And Amazin' Avenue wrote of the ceremony , "Only the Mets. Only the Mets could do this to you. Force you to smile when you want to wear a grimace." Andrew Cliff led a somber procession down the fairway toward the final green. Shadows were gathering on Golf Hill in Honesdale as the sun set on both the day and the Hornets’ record-breaking Lacka-wanna League links season. Abington Heights was just moments away from eliminating the local lads from this year’s play-off tournament. The only sounds from the gallery were excited whispers from Comet players and their parents. Honesdale fans stood mute and motionless. “I’m disappointed to see it end this way,” Coach Dan O’Neill told TWI Sports in a  whisper, a clipboard clutched tightly to his chest. “This has been such a memorable year in so many ways. I wish it could have ended differently.” Bittersweet End As the last group arrived at the ninth, only Cliff stood between Honesdale and a shutout. Andrew was still alive in his individual match with Abington’s Joe Karam. The two golfers were on the brink of a stalemate as Cliff prepared to blast out of a greenside bunker. Alas for the Red & Black faithful, Andrew’s ball was buried and he barely managed to escape the trap...to say nothing of knocking it close. Karam took advantage of Cliff’s predicament. Abington’s veteran linkster calmly two-putted for par, claiming both the final hole and the match. The Comets had just put the finishing touches on a 9-0 victory and ended Honesdale’s undefeated stay atop the local scholastic golf World. The Hornets finished up the ‘08 campaign as Northern D ...

If you're on the Brooklyn side of the Brooklyn Bridge, perhaps enjoying a pizza at Grimaldi's, followed by ice cream at the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory, why not make it a triumvirate of treats by taking a stroll over to Jacques Torres Chocolate in DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, that area of Brooklyn between the two bridges). Jacques Torres, the World-class pastry chef turned master chocolatier, has a whimsicality that he expresses through his chocolate creations. Some of the playful items you're likely to find here include milk chocolate-coated Cheerios, a caramel/rum sauce called Body Butter, and ice cold hot chocolate. The iced hot chocolate is particularly noteworthy, a blenderized combination of his packaged hot chocolate mix with ice, resulting in a frothy, Bittersweet, and surprisingly refreshing and invigorating beverage. There is a counter where someone will help you build your own gift boxes of chocolates piece-by-gorgeous-piece. Select from flavors such as Love Potion #9, Alizé Hearts of Passion, Wicked Fun, Ménage a Trois, and Love Bug (flavor translations available at the counter). Yes, chocolate is the food of love, and these are sure to do the trick, even if you favor the less steamily-named bonbons. Whatever you choose, the unusual flavors are pure and true, and the prices are surprisingly reasonable for chocolates of this quality and pedigree. ...

Camilo Villegas said after Sunday’s third round of the Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Boston that Vijay Singh “is obviously not the best putter in the World.” But he meant it as a compliment. Villegas, who fired an 8-under-par 63 to trail Mike Weir by one heading into today’s final round, isn’t the best putter in the World either. But, like Singh, he’s convinced himself of the complete opposite. “He decided to tell himself that he’s the best putter in the World, and this worked last week,” the 26-year-old Medellin, Columbia native said of the Fijian’s performance in last week’s The Barclays. “It’s been a little bit similar in my case. I decided to tell myself something similar to what Vijay told himself last week, that I’m a great putter and that I’m a lot better than people think and people write. “Today was a good reflection of that.” Villegas needed only 22 putts to navigate a course that played the toughest it has all week thanks to swirling winds and fast greens. Singh and Sergio Garcia trail Weir by three, while Ben Crane, Ernie Els and Jim Furyk are four back. Villegas missed the cut in last week’s The Barclays, and was in danger of not qualifying for next week’s BMW Championship. Now, however, he’s focused on earning his first Tour win. “I’m very proud of myself,” Villegas said. “(But) there’s a little Bittersweet taste when you work so hard and you haven’t won, when you see young guys winning, and you go like, ‘man, it’ ...

All Make Believe Gregory Page Sounden Records 8.6 stars *Goes well with gramophones and gin martinis Every time I listen to a Gregory Page recording, it reinforces my belief that Page doesn't just write songs, he writes albums. Most artists (and there's nothing wrong with this) write their tunes à la carte, drop them into an album, and give the album a name after the fact. But judging from what I hear on his records, Page comes up with an album concept first, then writes songs that perpetuate the album's theme. I could be wrong about this, but it's certainly how his albums read, especially on Make Believe , Greg Page's 7000th solo album, on which appear music-loving bumble bees, hand-shaking ghosts, silver dollar moons, telephone psychics, automobiles that dream, and bedrooms that rain - all of which, by themselves, are simple metaphors, but combined become important components of the Make Believe theme. Take the title cut for example: "There's a knock at the door My grandparents are here On a holiday from heaven We hug and we cheer And play cards and drink whiskey Then they disappear." The two signature aspects of this album are his lyrical imagery and the Bittersweet that oozes from the speakers, thanks, in part, to liberal dashes of the most melancholic instrument in the World, the cello, as well as the violin, which puts the sweet into "Bittersweet." Also enhancing the emotive aspect of All Make Believe is the hint of 40's style voc ...
