In the crush of controversy that surrounded Miley Cyrus over the past 12 months -- the overpriced concert tickets, that Annie Leibovitz Vanity Fair spread, the cell phone pix, the ill-advised YouTube videos -- we may have lost sight of an important fact. That Cyrus is, in the grand scheme of things, a baby. A self-possessed somewhat media-savvy baby, sure, but still tender, still tentative and definitely not yet capable of fending for herself. (And, since we nominated Miley for Biggest Train Wreck in this year's Lizzies, we get a rap on the knuckles too.) Which is why I felt a little verklempt when I read about Miley's 16th birthday bash at, of course, Disneyland. Because not content to let this girl -- excuse me, I mean child -- celebrate this milestone with a modicum of privacy, she was instead costumed, handed a mike and pushed on stage to perform ... ALL indicators seem to point to passage of the Treasury's Wall Street rescue plan today, and yet the financial world does not seem much cheered. As vital as the bail-out plan may be, it increasingly looks to be a stop-gap or half-measure when set against the scope of the crisis. The clouds are simply gathering more quickly and thickly than many had anticipated. Here's Felix Salmon : The S&P 500 closed [Thursday] at its lowest end-of-day level since October 2004 -- lower, even, than it closed on Monday... Here's a datapoint to underscore just how bad things are: the markets plunged on a day when the WSJ had a front-page story about how the Fed is considering even more rate cuts -- the kind of story which is normally good for at least a couple of hundred points on the Dow. But this crisis has clearly moved far past the point at which monetary policy alone can turn things around. The only real question is whether monetary policy and fiscal policy and TARP and regulatory reform and closer cooperation between global authorities can turn things around. Right now, I'd put that at about p=0.4. Here's Paul Krugman : Double plus ungood news on multiple fronts this morning. The credit crunch is getting worse: LIBOR jumped again, the TED spread is at a new record. Bad news on employment : payrolls down 159,000, average work week down, official unemployment rate flat at 6.1 percent but broad measure (U6) up from 10.7 to 11. We are going over the e ... So how is everyone's Summer? Thank goodness its almost over, here in Manitoba; now we can get back to snow, cold, and bad roads. Yessss . Though summer is winding down, the lack of community blogs on 1UP tells me everyone seems to be out making the most of it. I trust those of you who haven't been blogging recently were outside, lounging on a beach somewhere, soaking up the sun and drinking daiquiris, like yours truly. Whether or not I'm actually doing that or imagining I am while at work isn't important, I hope you had some time in the sun. Another big reason I haven't done much of anything is Disgaea 3. My PS3 is finally seeing the love it deserves, considering I've accumulated 24 hours playing time in just over 4 days. I really love this game, and quite to the title's contrary, Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice is a form of justice. You may recall that my psp was stolen , and with it, a copy of Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness. The thieves also weren't kind enough to leave behind the memory card containing the 100 hours of play time that I had saved. Sure, I can buy the equipment and the software, but I will never get that time back. Its the equivalent to killing me 4 days before I would die naturally! At least, it felt that way until last Tuesday, when I was introduced to Prince Mao. Mao, heir to the Netherworld throne I discovered that I can relate to this new main character (pictured) in more ways than one. See, Mao's ... Source: www.newsday.com --- 39 days ago

At first glance, last night’s Raw was a good show. There was an awesome final segment, a major star made a special appearance and the program never dragged. But the episode also accentuated the depressing reality of the injury situation on Raw. On the go-home show for Sunday’s Unforgiven pay-per-view, Shawn Michaels and Chris Jericho closed the program by signing the contract for their match. We’ve all seen these contract signing segments many times before, but the intense performances of Michaels and Jericho put this one at another level. The entire time that they sat across the table from one another, Michaels started intently at Jericho, while Jericho never looked directly at Michaels until right at the end. The verbal confrontation briefly turned physical, as Michaels thwarted a sneak attack by Lance Cade. While Jericho stood outside the ring, Michaels lunged at him and landed awkwardly on the floor. Obviously, that was how Michaels suffered a torn triceps. That one slip by Michaels in the closing seconds of what has been a tremendous build-up has put Sunday’s match in jeopardy and could put Michaels out of action for four to six months. We should know more about Michaels’ prognosis soon, although Michaels reportedly is vowing that he will wrestle at Unforgiven. At the beginning of the show, Randy Orton, who is out of action with a broken collarbone, made an appearance. It was great to see Orton back on television and he cut a good ... After more than eight years at the middle school, James Gibney’s term as principal will end Oct. 24, three days before he starts at the same position in Little Compton, R.I. The School Committee will discuss finding a replacement at its meeting next Tuesday. Leaving the middle school is Bittersweet, Gibney said Tuesday. “At this point, the school is up and running, and everything is going well,” he said, mentioning rising MCAS test scores and other improvements. “In actuality, I’m leaving at a time when everything is on the upside, and it should be a smooth transition.” When Gibney decided he would retire, he said he kept open the possibility of working at a college or at a school in Rhode Island. He didn’t want to wait until the end of the school year, when he was to retire, to respond to an opportunity like the principal position at the Wilbur & McMahon School in Little Compton. Gibney signed a contract last week after he was appointed by the Little Compton School Committee. He told students last Thursday morning on the school’s TV show, and many kids approached him later to be ensured plans like a Washington, D.C., field trip would go on as planned. Gibney said he would be willing to work with his successor over the next few months on nights and weekends. “I’ll only be a phone call away,” he said. Gibney praised his staff at Westport Middle School and said they should be able to easily transition to a new principal. “I’ve had ... Source: www.tonawanda-news.com --- 11 hours ago
