http://broadband.mpi-sws.org/transparency/bttest.php Anyone try this Glasnost Test. This is my result in the Richmond area. Is BitTorrent Traffic on a well-known BitTorrent port (6881) throttled? * The BitTorrent upload (seeding) worked. Our tool was successful in uploading data using the BitTorrent protocol. * There's no indication that your ISP rate limits your BitTorrent uploads. In our tests a TCP upload achieved minimal 141 Kbps while a BitTorrent upload achieved maximal 174 Kbps. You can find details here. * The BitTorrent download worked. Our tool was successful in downloading data using the BitTorrent protocol. * There's no indication that your ISP rate limits your BitTorrent downloads. In our tests a TCP download achieved minimal 814 Kbps while a BitTorrent download achieved maximal 1098 Kbps. You can find details here. Fears abound whether the Federal Communications Commission will enforce its Aug. 1 order demanding Comcast stop throttling BitTorrent Traffic. The non-profit law firm Media Access Project is asking three federal appellate courts to enforce the decision now. The FCC gave Comcast, which denies any throttling, until year's end to comply. ...

Wired reports that Comcast finally provided information on its network management practices late Friday. In a report to the FCC (PDF), the cable company admitted to targeting P2P protocols Ares, BitTorrent, eDonkey, FasTrack, and Gnutella. Quoting: "For each of the managed P2P protocols, the [Sandvine Policy Traffic Switch] monitors and identifies the number of simultaneous unidirectional uploads that are passed from the [Cable Modem Termination System] to the upstream router. Because of the prevalence of P2P Traffic on the upstream portion of our network, the number of simultaneous unidirectional upload sessions of any particular P2P protocol at any given time serves as a useful proxy for determining the level of overall network congestion. For each of the protocols, a session threshold is in place that is intended to provide for equivalently fair access between the protocols, but still mitigate the likelihood of congestion that could cause service degradation for our customers." The Pirate Bay , the world's largest BitTorrent tracker (and one of the most hated), may be getting into streaming, a tipster told us. The Pirate Bay, which has 3 million users and is closing in on 15 million peers, first mentioned the possibility of a streaming service back in May, but little was heard about it until a cryptic birthday wish to Brokep was posted on the service's blog. It's now believed that streaming is right around the corner and will be housed on thepiratecity.org . Right now, the page is down, saying too much Traffic was the culprit, but a cached image shows DVD rips being used as the streaming source. ...

Thanks, FCC Comment Peer-to-peer file sharing just got a lot more expensive in the US. The FCC has ordered Comcast to refrain from capping P2P Traffic, endorsing a volume-based pricing scheme that would “charge the most aggressive users overage fees” instead. BitTorrent, Inc. reacted to the ruling by laying-off 15 per cent of its workforce, while network neutrality buffs declared victory and phone companies quietly celebrated. Former FCC Chairman Bill Kennard says the legal basis of the order is “murky.”… ...

Comcast officially submitted its network management plans to the FCC. As expected, they include no more stomping on BitTorrent, replacing that scheme with “slow(ing) Internet speeds for its heaviest users at peak times when its network is congested,” the Wall Street Journal reports. Comcast will do this by creating a second stream of Traffic for recent [...] ...

Here's the deal, which (of course) D-Link tech support is no help whatsoever. I have an EBR-2310 wired router, firmware 2.01, HW rev. B. Two or three connected PCs. Everything goes very smoothly until a lot of connections are open (BitTorrent, or lots of webpage refreshing in a short time period) - then suddenly the router will seize up for 30 seconds to a minute timing out everything. No problems of the sort when directly connected to the modem. No luck when rebooting or power-cycling the router. I have a suspicion that there is a low hard limit on connections, and when the bucket fills up it just won't pass any more Traffic until some times out. Of course the timeout is insanely long (300 seconds for a no-activity UDP connection? 20 seconds for a CLOSED TCP connection?!?!) Some research into customer reviews sort of proves this theory out. Anyway, my question is: do any workarounds exist for this? Do some router settings cause my max connections to be lower - upnp, dns relay, spi, multi-cast, QoS, etc? What about alternative or 'hacked' firmware (or secret options) to put reasonable time-out limits or bump up the number of connections? I would really appreciate any feedback you can give on this as it is quite frustrating for me - and especially my wife! ...

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2331596,00.asp Comcast put a hard cap on its customer's Internet usage this week. The average user may be initially shocked to find out you can't just download—or upload—as much as you want, but the truth is that Comcast's limits won't affect the average user—at least not right now. This cap does represent a major shift in the broadband industry, a shift that should concern casual browsers and power users alike. But putting the larger issue of Net neutrality aside for a moment, I just don't think my mother and I should pay the same rate for Internet usage. My mom has a cable modem. She hits the Web every day to get news, forward inspirational e-mails, and send me photos of the latest varmint or reptile that has wandered into her backyard in Tucson, Arizona. I doubt she reaches 1MB of data per day. I have a cable modem too, but my usage looks a lot different. When I'm home, I'm constantly online, blogging, writing, and sending files and high-resolution artwork back and forth to my coworkers here at PCMag.com. I also download music, videos, and podcasts from iTunes, grab old TV shows from BitTorrent, stream movies through Netflix, and I've recently started playing Warhawk with others online on my PlayStation 3. All are bandwidth-intensive applications. On a busy weeknight, I could blow through a few gigabytes of Traffic, easy. On weekends: much, much more. No reasonable person would say that my mom an ...

Comcast claims Federal Communications Commission exceeded its authority in an Aug. 1 ruling finding the cable giant violated the agency's network neutrality principles by throttling P2P Traffic from BitTorrent. Comcast renews it contention that throttling network Traffic is acceptable under the Federal Communications Commission's reasonable network Traffic management rules. - Comcast fired the next shot in the company's ongoing battle with the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) over the management of the cable giant's broadband network, asking a federal court to overturn the FCC's Aug. 1 decision that Comcast violated the agency's network neutrality principles. One month after being found guilty of breaking net neutrality laws, the large U.S. ISP Comcast has appealed the decision in hopes of having the ruling overturned. On August 1st the Commission found Comcast guilty of improperly "throttling" P2P and BitTorrent Traffic without letting its users know that it was doing so. In court the ISP admitted that it temporarily slowed down service for top bandwidth users when the network was congested. "The commission's action was legally inappropriate and its findings were not justified by the record," Comcast Executive Vice President David L. Cohen added in a press release . "I'm certainly disappointed they ended up appealing," FCC Chairman Kevin J. Martin said. "The commission has done a very thorough job on investigating the complaint. We thought we needed to step in and protect consumers' access to the Internet." In related news, Comcast recently announced that it will begin implementing a 250GB monthly bandwidth cap on its users as a way to satisfy their need to turn the Internet from unlimited to limited. The groundswell of consumers using social technologies poses both a threat and an opportunity for media companies. The threat has often been more visible than the opportunity: User-generated content diffuses editorial power. The immense popularity of social networking sites like Facebook introduces new competition for audiences' time and attention. The ability to share content freely on sites like YouTube and peer-to-peer networks like BitTorrent means that consumers can bypass official media distribution channels, eroding media companies' traditional revenue streams of ad impressions and purchasing or subscription fees. But media companies can use the same technologies and social trends that threaten their businesses to their benefit. By supporting audiences and their objectives with smart social media strategies, media companies can accomplish their eBusiness goals of increasing Traffic, engagement, and resultant ad revenue. This report presents a how-to guide for media eBusiness executives to define a social strategy and model the return on investment of their efforts. ...
