This is like a tri-state area girls' heaven. Jersey boy Bruce Springsteen and Long Island, NY homeboy Billy Joel are putting on a concert -- together -- in order to raise money for Barack Obama 's presidential campaign. The event will take place at the Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC on Oct. 16 ( FYI: that's the day before my birthday if anyone wants to buy me tickets), a day after Barack concludes his final debate with GOP contender John McCain at Hofstra University. Sources say the Illinois senator with be Barack-ing at the concert with Billy and Bruce, and, chances are he isn't going to have to shell out the big bucks everyones will to see the show. To witness this first-time pairing between the two music legends, you'll have to shell out at least $500 (that's what they start at), while "premiere seating" will cost you $2,500 a seat, and exclusive "lounge" seats will set you back a cool $10,000. Yeah, I'm probably not going. But a girl can dream, right? ...
My colleagues know me as -- and sometimes mock me for being -- a huge Billy Joel fan. So when I saw this , one of them (let's just say his name rhymes with Noel Shornton) suggested I rewrite "We Didn't Start the Fire" as an Obama theme song. That seemed a little ambitious, but I was able to pull together a playlist that would make sense. In fact, in the spirit of bipartisanship, I offer two -- one for those who like Obama, one for those who, um, don't. (And yes, I'm aware that this guy will be there too, but I'm not nearly as big a fan of his, so I'll leave it to enterprising commenters to suggest stuff from his catalogue.) ...
Yes, the one show that a good chunk of the Tri-State area would sell its children and/or plasma to see has finally been announced: Long Island poet laureate Billy Joel and New Jersey big boss Bruce Springsteen will share a stage next month, when they play a Barack Obama benefit (with ticket prices ranging from $500 to $10,000) at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom. (Why this show won't be at Madison Square Garden, which is just around the corner and which would surely sell out even at these prices, is a mystery .) Sure, there are apparently other guests on the bill—including the Democratic presidential nominee himself—but I bet you if this show goes well, many people residing on both sides of Manhattan will be lobbying for this particular bill to be taken on the road, or at least rotated between MSG, Nassau Coliseum, and the Meadowlands for the next, oh, six months or so. Even in these trying economic times, those shows would print money—and all the merch could be themed on the wide variety of transportation options that terminate at Penn Station! [ Billboard ] ...
