New Mexico's Gov. Bill Richardson, pictured here on May 29, 2008, has some thoughts on what a potential VP should have on his resume. (Associated Press) By Keith B. Richburg NEW YORK -- One of the rules of being picked as a vice-presidential running mate is to never, ever openly express an interest in the job. And New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson knows the rule well, avoiding a direct answer when asked here, at a Council on Foreign Relations luncheon, if he'd like to be on the Democratic ticket with Sen. Barack Obama. "This is a decision that Sen. Obama needs to make," Richardson said. "And you don't need to make it now. Otherwise, what are we going to do at the Democratic convention in August?" At another point, Richardson said he would be "honored" to be asked, but said he also liked being a governor. But the rule about ...

The Bourbon Room interviewed New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson late Wednesday on Barack Obama’s comments on Iraq. I apologize for the late turn-around on this transcript, but on-air work load interfered. As many will remember, Richardson adopted the hardest line on swift troop withdrawals from Iraq. Richardson called for the removal of all U.S. forces [...] ...

At last, Barack Obama is the Democratic Party's official nominee. Now, the Democrats move forward to November, but what sterling proxy will rise forth from the political herd to wow the country as Obama's right-hand man (or woman)? Thus far, the suggestions are stunning in their mediocrity. There's not enough blogging room available on the internet to properly tear apart all of the Veep suggestions, so I have decided to focus on two of my favorite suggestions: Bill Richardson and Tom Daschle. This is probably an appropriate time to mention that the following critique is chock full of profanity, offensive observations, and sarcastic musings. Bill Richardson Did YOU know Bill Richardson is the Governor of New Mexico and was a United Nations ambassador? You may have heard these trivia nuggets one of the eight million times Bill credit-dropped them before reciting his stump speech during the Democratic debates. It didn't matter what question the moderators asked him, ole' jiggly chins somehow contorted his way back into explaining that he hails from the great state of New Mexico. We get it, Bill. Mexicans LOVE you . I know this kind of resume-dropping is a small thing to harp on, but it's a huge pet peeve of mine. You just know Richardson is that dude at the party no one wants to talk to because he always name-drops in the midst of every story because ONE TIME he got to go back stage at a Bon Jovi concert. It's sort of like how Bill ...

"No pictures! Please! I'm just a man." Photo: Getty Images New Mexico governor Bill Richardson voiced some opinions today on what Barack Obama really needs to fill out his presidential ticket . Richardson's own name has been tossed around recently with less frequency than Jim Webb's and Hillary Clinton's, but that hasn't kept him out of the dialogue. The Observer reports that at a Council on Foreign Relations event in Manhattan, the former ambassador and cabinet secretary was asked what attributes Obama should be looking for in a running mate. His answer was oddly vague: "Regional balance — can you bring votes?…We’ve ignored the Southwest Hispanic vote. So… Congressman Joe Baca ? Whom are we talking about here? Richardson also said, "If John Kerry had won New Mexico, Colorado, and Arizona…he’d be president today." Really, Bill, you're going to have to be more specific here. BE ELECTED by Meg White It's a long weekend, thanks to a politically-themed holiday, and Congress is out of session. News is slow...time to speculate! Of course, everyone's favorite topic is the choice for Sen. Barack Obama's running mate. There are too many names to list them all, so I'll tell you about my favorite: New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson. He's got both executive and foreign policy experience, he's likable, he's Hispanic...need I say more? Apparently, yes. I stole the pic and line from Ezra, but what about Bill? After all, he’s got the swing state, gubernatorial experience, a demonstratable post-partisan track record and his foreign policy credentials are literally second to none in this or nearly any VP crop I can remember. Plus, his endorsement of Obama came at a time [...] ...

Ryan asks, "Could you do an evaluation of Richardson for VP? He seems like an obviously good choice, but there hasn't really been any discussion of him as a nominee. He has a great deal of diplomatic experience, energy experience, he's a governor of a Western state, he may be able to help with the Latino vote, etc. So why no discussion of him?" The normal dismissal of Richardson's VP chances tends to focus on the personal rumors that swirl about him. But aside from his troubling habit of inappropriately touching underlings , I'm going to leave that aside. Rather, Richardson shouldn't be vice president because he lacks the policy heft to be president. I became suspicious of Richardson when he made it a point in his speeches to praise balanced budget amendments -- an awful idea last seen advocated by Newt Gingrich and Orrin Hatch. So I scheduled an interview with him to talk through some of this. It wasn't reassuring. I no longer think Richardson is an economic conservative. I was misled by his support for a balanced budget amendment, his attempts to contrast himself with anti-growth politicians, and his constant comments that "The Democratic Party, our first solution is to tax, but I'm not of that school." [...] Rather, Richardson is an economic opportunist. He's adopted the conservative's rhetorical critique of liberal economic thought in order to distinguish himself from the other candidates, most of whom are responding to this ...

New Mexico governor Bill Richardson let it be known on last night’s (6/20/08) Hannity & Colmes that he’s under consideration to be Barack Obama’s running mate. Richardson also let it be known that he’s interested. In a nice change of pace for the show, a Democrat got a segment to himself for a discussion about offshore drilling. Richardson, the former Secretary of Energy in the Clinton administration, advocated drilling elsewhere other than off the coast of Florida or California along with “a bipartisan, comprehensive energy strategy” that includes increased fuel efficiency, alternative fuels, clean coal, natural gas and even “keeping the nuclear option.” You can watch the entire interview here . When it was Alan Colmes’ turn, he asked Richardson about the possibility of being Obama’s running mate. Colmes’ first question was, “Has anybody talked to you about a vice presidential slot or anything?” Richardson laughed and said, “No, no. I knew you were gonna ask that.” He went on to say the usual, “I’m very happy as a governor.” But he also added, “You know, you can’t turn something like that down, obviously.” Colmes continued, “Has anybody from the Obama camp reached out to you? Has there been any of those conversations taking place?” “I, I, I can’t talk about that,” Richardson answered. “Oh,” Colmes said, weightily. Richardson replied, “My point here is that – Look, this is something that the senator needs to decide himself, on his ...

I actually think this could be quite a good idea. Richardson has a lot of experience and knowledge. Also important for Obama is that Richardson may be able to get Hispanics to vote for the Democratic presidential candidate come November.
