I think there's a pretty bipartisan agreement among powerbrokers and political advance teams to marginalize dissent around their Presidential candidates. We'll see "freedom cages" full of protesters kept out of earshot of convention delegates in Denver AND St. Paul. However, there is a pretty crucial difference here; while dissent through new media organizing is tolerated on Barack Obama's campaign website, and while he actually took the time to address those concerns (unsatisfying, but nevertheless unprecedented), on the Republican side any protest whatsoever produces this kind of reaction . DENVER, Colo.-On orders from Senator John McCain's security detail, Denver police escorted a 61-year-old woman away who was waiting in line to attend a so-called town hall meeting with McCain that was billed as open to the public. Carol Kreck, who works as a librarian in Denver, held a homemade sign reading "McCain = Bush." On orders from McCain's security detail, police cited her for trespassing and escorted her to the sidewalk. She was told if she returned she would be arrested. "And all I did was carry a sign that said McCain = Bush," Kreck said. "And for everyone who voted for Bush, I don't see why it's offensive to say McCain = Bush." In defense of McCain, this was a dangerous woman and a real security risk to the state: How come they didn't bug the dude to her right with the green shirt and the McCain-Bush peapod? Could they not wrap their he ...

On this day in 1964.... The Civil Rights Bill - one of the most important piece of legislation in American history - has become law. US President Lyndon B Johnson signed the Bill creating equal Rights in voting, education, public accommodations, union membership and in federally assisted programmes - regardless of race, colour, religion or national origin. A draft law permitting British authorities to detain suspected terrorists without charging them violates Rights to liberty, a Human Rights Watch report says. The House of Lords will begin debate Tuesday on the counterterrorism Bill that includes the 42-day pre-charge detention and other proposals HRW considers counter to Britain's obligations under international human Rights law, the organization said of the briefing paper released Friday. The third anniversary of the 2005 bombings in London reminds us that Britain faces a real terror threat, said Judith Sunderland, HRW's Western Europe researcher. But locking people up without charge for six weeks will not make the country safer.Debate begins the day after the third anniversary of the terrorist bombings in London. ...

(Telecompaper) The Spanish Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade plans to adopt various measures to improve competition in the telecommunications sector, including a Telecommunications Users Bill of Rights, more flexible procedures for number porting and opening up the 11818 directory inquiries service to competition. The telecom users Bill of Rights stipulates that, prior to subscribing to an internet service, the operator must inform the customer of the theoretical maximum speed that can be provided via this line. Additionally, operators are forbidden to launch high-speed offers if the respective line does not support a theoretical maximum speed of at least 80 percent of the speed advertised in the offer. On portability, the government wants to shorten the period for completing the process to a maximum two days after the request. The ministry is preparing a decree to modify the existing regulations on number porting, ending the requirement for the user's written consent and allowing verbal consent with verification by third parties. On customer service, operators will also be required to notify users one month in advance of any change in their contract as well as provide detailed billing, with a breakdown of fixed and mobile phone service charges. Bills that include charges for other services should be separate, so as not to cut access to the telephone service for non-payment of a different service. The operator must also prov ...

I've found that few Texans are aware of the Texas Bill of Rights. It contains many similar provisions to the US Constitution. In theory, these provisions could provide more protection than the US Constitution. In practice, not always. Article 1 - Bill OF Rights Section 10 - Rights OF ACCUSED IN CRIMINAL PROSECUTIONS In all criminal prosecutions the accused shall have a speedy public trial by an impartial jury. He shall have the right to demand the nature and cause of the accusation against him, and to have a copy thereof. He shall not be compelled to give evidence against himself, and shall have the right of being heard by himself or counsel, or both, shall be confronted by the witnesses against him and shall have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, except that when the witness resides out of the State and the offense charged is a violation of any of the anti-trust laws of this State, the defendant and the State shall have the right to produce and have the evidence admitted by deposition, under such rules and laws as the Legislature may hereafter provide; and no person shall be held to answer for a criminal offense, unless on an indictment of a grand jury, except in cases in which the punishment is by fine or imprisonment, otherwise than in the penitentiary, in cases of impeachment, and in cases arising in the army or navy, or in the militia, when in actual service in time of war or public danger. (Amended Nov. 5, ...
