Yesterday on his Radio Factor, Bill O'Reilly tried as hard as he could to come up with something that proved the case those dang smear sites were making. That the Fox News channel is racist. He even brought on the ever brilliant, albeit Fox News consultant, Prof. Dr. Marc Lamont Hill, a real live African-American, to try to help him. Problem is, Bill nor Prof. Hill ever looked at the "Fox's Quarterback" (Bill's own egoless designation) himself. In one of the most incendiary columns ever written, " Race And The Presidential Election, " Bill O'Reilly sets the race-bait bar to record-breaking...depths. Short of saying that Barack Obama wants to sleep with your pearly-white daughter, O'Reilly used just about every button meant to alarm his white fans to the fact that Barack Obama is BLACK and that just his running for, let alone becoming, president, could set off race-laced fireworks. Of course Bill said this wasn't race-baiting as he was just reporting the facts (despite Prof. Dr. Hill's protestations that day), here were just a few comments from Bill's column... "Obama seems to be in. Now comes the hard part--convincing Americans that he is the best choice for president without all hell breaking loose on the race front." Since when does convincing Americans that a candidate is the best choice lead to "hell breaking loose," unless you want your reader to believe it can? "Thanks partly to Reverend Wright's now immortal 'the USA of KKK ...

Bill O'Reilly discussed with Shepard Smith today why he held back the full tape of Rev. Jesse Jackson caught by Fox News on a hot mic. "I'm not in the business of hurting Jesse Jackson, because it does hurt Jesse Jackson," he said. "And I'm not in the business of creating some kind of controversy that is not relevant to the general subject: one civil rights leader disparaging another, over policy. So we held it back. Some weasel leaked it to the internet. That person wants to hurt Jesse Jackson." "Do we know who leaked it, and what's happened to that person?" Smith asked. "No, but I've got the waterboard right over here," O'Reilly responded. [WATCH] ...

Photo: Getty Images Yesterday, armed with petitions signed by over 600,000 people, Nas and the MoveOn.org offshoot ColorofChange.com protested outside the headquarters of Fox News against the network’s perceived racism against “the Obama family” and “black Americans.” Nas called the network a “propaganda machine” and said their attacks have gone too far. Fox News replied with a none-too-subtle dig against Nas’s motivations, releasing a statement that read, “Fox News believes in all protesters exercising their right to free speech, including Nas, who has an album to promote." Zing ! Well, obviously, that was not the end of that, because no two entities in this world enjoy a beef more than rappers and Fox News. And so it was that Bill O’Reilly used his show’s Talking Points segment on Wednesday night to ratchet things up a notch with some standard O’Reilly hyperbole, calling Moveon.org "the new Klan” and the protesters “Kool-Aid–drinking zombies.” Luckily, for everybody who enjoys being entertained, Nas appeared on The Colbert Report last night to further the beef by making his own absurd statements. “The things he's saying is worse than the worst rap lyrics I ever heard,” Nas said of O’Reilly, willfully ignoring much of the rap lyrics he’s heard. He also told Colbert, "I think O'Reilly's afraid of me." Probably true: He thinks you’re a zombie! Nas challenged O’Reilly to debate with him on neutral turf, which, if it ever actually h ...

FNC anchor Bill O'Reilly appeared on Studio B this afternoon to address TVNewser's story about what else Rev. Jesse Jackson said when he was recorded chatting with a fellow guest prior to going live on Fox News July 6. The O'Reilly Factor aired portions of the tape last Wednesday. Today, on Shepard Smith's program, O'Reilly confirmed, "It's one word, a disparaging word." "N-word?" asked Smith. "Yeah, and it's trash-talking," said O'Reilly. O'Reilly went on to explain why his show didn't originally play the full tape: "I'm not in the business of hurting Jesse Jackson, because it does hurt Jesse Jackson. And I'm not in the business of creating some kind of controversy that is not relevant to the general subject: one civil rights leader disparaging another, over policy. So we held it back." Then he turned his attention to the person who tipped off TVNewser. "Some weasel leaked it to the internet," he said. "That person wants to hurt Jesse Jackson." And what about the setting Jackson went to give his first response to the tape?continued...New Career Opportunities Daily: The best jobs in media ...

Right now, the smart money is betting the next president of the United States will be named Obama, and dollars are the primary reason why. As you may have heard, the senator has flip-flopped on public campaign financing and now says he will not accept it, even though he once thought it was a swell idea. The government set taxpayer-based funding for presidential candidates at $85million because, the wisdom went, it would prevent fat cats in the private sector from donating big dollars to influence a potential POTUS. But, like the military, it's voluntary, and Sen. Obama is no longer... ...

I don't know why this comparison never occurred to me before. I don't know why it took Rush Limbaugh , of all people, to make it. But I've never read a more perfect description of Bill O'Reilly than this one: At dinner the night before, Bill O'Reilly's name came up, and Limbaugh expressed his opinion of the Fox cable king. He hadn't been sure at the time that he wanted it on the record. But on second thought, "somebody's got to say it," he told me. "The man is Ted Baxter." Talk about nails and heads. Bill O'Reilly IS Ted Baxter - vacuous, ignorant and blessed with a supernatural arrogance that makes him utterly oblivious to just how ridiculous he is. Absolutely spot on comparison. ZEV CHAFETS wrote a rather revealing profile of the most listened to radio talker in America in the New York Times Magazine:"It's not possible to offend me now," he said. "I won't give people the power to do it anymore. My problem was born of immaturity and my childhood desire for acceptance. I learned in drug rehab that this was stunting and unrealistic. I was seeking acceptance from the wrong people."Limbaugh told me he is no longer concerned about the opinions of his colleagues and rivals, and he makes no effort to disguise his contempt for most of them. Michael Savage, ranked No. 3 among talk-radio hosts by Talkers magazine? "He's not even in my rearview mirror." Garrison Keillor? "I don't even know where to find NPR on the dial." At dinner the night before, Bill O'Reilly's name came up, and Limbaugh expressed his opinion of the Fox cable king. He hadn't been sure at the time that he wanted it on the record. Bill O'Reilly did a good number on "local" Congressman Robert Wexler tonight. And I think Wexler is in a bit of trouble. You see, the longtime Democratic rep says he lives in Delray Beach. The Constitution demands that he have a residence in his district after all. But he really lives in Potomac MD. The house in Delray? It's owned by Lawrence and Roslyn Cohen, the parents of Wexler's wife. And it's in a restricted over-55 community, which makes it impossible for Wexler and and his three children to reside there. U.S. Rep. Robert Wexler (D-Delray Beach)? I think not. Wexler's Republican opponent, Edward Lynch, dug this stuff up and fed it to Fox News. O'Reilly ate it up. A Fox News producer named Rick Jenkins caught up with Wexler in the front yard of his home in Potomac. When Jenkins walked up on his driveway, Wexler -- looking 100 percent the goofy suburban dad in a green hat, green t-shirt, and shorts -- didn't even wait for a question. "Just a couple quick questions for you," Jenkins said after introducing himself. "No, I'm not doing this," Wexler said. "If you want to call my office, that's fine, I gotta drive my daughter to work." Jenkins, like any good reporter, kept charging, asking him by the congressman's silver Volvo SUV if his residency was in Delray. "That's correct, that's my residence," he said. Jenkins noted that it belonged to Wexler's mother-in-law. "Is that true? You live with your mother-in-law?" Jenkins asked with ...

Tonight Bill O'Reilly found a way to talk about the Jesse Jackson story again. At this point, his behavior has passed from annoying to amusing. Since there's absolutely no reason to keep discussing it, he now must sneak it into unrelated segments and find some reason to bring it up. Tonight Bernie Goldberg and Jane Hall came on to discuss the press coverage for Obama's trip so Bill-O announced, "Goldberg has a beef with me about Jesse Jackson". That Bernie can be a real life saver at times. First BOR got his Obama digs in, complaining that Katie Couric, Brian Williams and Charles Gibson will be going on Obama's trip while poor John McCain has been ignored. Using the tone usually reserved for Al Gore, he referred to it as the " Great Obama Medicine Show" commenting that the media is acting like he's already elected. Goldberg injected some race into the speculation opining that the networks are sending a message that Obama is more important than McCain because McCain is just " the same old white politician". O'Reilly offered no objection to that observation It was business as usual with suggestions that the media was going to cover for Obama which is always an intimidation tactic designed to activate guilt followed by harsher coverage. (Unfortunately, it usually works.) Jane Hall first conceded slightly and then pointed out that McCain has enjoyed massive press coverage in past campaigns. Then it was time for Goldberg's "beef with ...

In a letter to the Phoenix , Rich Goggin of Peabody says I was wrong to claim, as I did in the recent Muzzle Awards , that Fox News Channel host Bill O'Reilly "loves nothing more than to tell his guests to 'shut up.'" Goggin instructs me thusly: "Except O'Reilly only did that once, seven years ago." Really. Now, I'm going to make an assumption, but I'm pretty sure the source of Goggin's misinformation is O'Reilly himself. O'Reilly's claim was included in Robert Greenwald's documentary "OutFoxed." It is followed by a hilarious stream of O'Reilly telling both guests and non-guests alike, over and over, to "shut up." Here is the clip: As Ronald Reagan once said, facts are stupid things . And if that's not enough for you, Mr. Goggin, Jack Shafer of Slate wrote way back in 2003, "Bill O'Reilly says 'shut up' the way other people say 'um.'" He follows that with one, two, three ... OK, make that 30 examples. I posted a comment to Goggin's letter, but it doesn't seem to have taken yet. I don't know if he's a Media Nation reader, but perhaps someone will send him this way. Meanwhile, my advice for him is to shut up. ...

When Bill O'Reilly first broke the story about Jesse Jackson's comments, he made a point of telling viewers that he wasn't revealing everything Jackson said because it wasn't important to the story suggesting that he was far too noble to stoop to tabloid tactics. If you suspected that O'Reilly would find a way to use the dirt while maintaining his virtuous persona, you were correct. Somehow the edited Jackson comments were leaked and O'Reilly immediately showed up on Studio B with Shepard Smith today to get some more attention. Then,of course, he repeated the whole routine on The Factor tonight and even aired a clip from Studio B. Smith, claiming that the tape is always rolling during a remote taping, couldn't understand how Jackson would allow himself to get caught. O'Reilly, sounding very understanding, managed to make the point that Jackson was over the hill by suggesting he could have forgotten the tape was on because of his age. O'Reilly explained that he had to report the story because it was about a civil rights leader attacking Obama adding that he never wanted to hurt Jesse Jackson. However, he didn't explain why he had to leave in the "cut off his nuts" line or why he was compelled to continue the humiliation by having Jackson's body language analyzed last night BOR, stayed firmly on his pedestal, refusing to elaborate on the "trash talk" that was leaked online. However, he did let Smith reveal that the "N" word was invo ...

Bill O'Reilly wasn't satisfied with merely showing a clip of Jesse Jackson criticizing Barack Obama in an unguarded moment. He also invited Clarence Page and Warren Ballentine for a speculating session even though he said he wasn't going to speculate. Although Page and Ballentine tried to stress Jackson's support for Obama, O'Reilly kept pushing the idea that there was "rivalry" and "malevolent" motives behind Jackson's comment. 7/9/08 with video ...
