Perrysburg woman tries to ticket DOT for long traffic delay By DAVID PATCH, Toledo Blade When Carol Greenberg got stuck in a work-zone backup on southbound I-275 at its merge with I-75 in Monroe County late last month, she did more than just fume about it. First, she sent the Michigan Department of Transportation an e-mail complaint. Then the Perrysburg resident did something many motorists probably consider but rarely, if ever, do. Mrs. Greenberg sent MDOT a $16 Bill for the gasoline she figured she'd wasted idling in traffic. "Thousands of vehicles from both Interstates, including mine, sat an estimated 50 minutes, wasting thousands of dollars worth of $4-per-gallon gasoline, belching tons of emissions into the atmosphere," she wrote. Rob Morosi, a department spokesman in Detroit, said, "We usually get damage claims about stones kicked up from the roadway or overspray from painting I have never heard of anyone being compensated for the loss of gasoline." Mrs. Greenburg said in an interview that the delay was doubly unpleasant for her Maine coon cat, Sammy, who howled through the entire experience in a pet carrier in the back seat. Mrs. Greenburg and Sammy were on their way home July 23 from a specialty veterinarian in Southfield, Mich., where the cat underwent allergy testing. I'm sick. My nose fills like it weighs 87 pounds. My head is pounding. My body is aching. My eyes are burning. I think I may have a fever. I never get sick. I really don't. I spent last winter working in a hermetically-sealed petri dish surrounded by a pile of fluish people, and I never had so much as a sniffle. All my colleagues were hacking and coughing, and I was fine. But I'm sick now, and nothing is making me feel better. I don't know if it's possible to be sick with grief, but maybe that's what this impalpable scourge is. Take one heaping dose of unparalleled sadness, blend it with a few tablespoons of ennui, and you'll feel like dreck. Trust me. I can promise you that. My cousin Harris Wulfson died a few weeks ago, suddenly, unexpectedly, violently, tragically. He was 34 years old, a brilliant polymath who could play every musical instrument he laid his hands on (including the Tabla, the Bodhran, the Balalaika, and the Cymbalon). He would quote Ayn Rand and Doctor Suess, Tom Waits and Frederich Nietzsche, Nixon and Hegels, and Myron Floren, often in the same sentence. Children loved him. Women loved him. Men loved him.
