It's Thursday afternoon and Democrats in Denver are as quiet as an army on the eve of battle. It's partly exhaustion. A political convention is no country for old men, but just 14% of delegates are under 36, meaning 14% at most are of an age to party hearty, as in truth nearly everyone here has done since the moment their planes touched down. The quiet also comes from knowing in a few hours your champion faces a critical test. A month ago, Democrats who'd said there was no way to lose this election began thinking they'd somehow managed to find one. A week in Denver has restored some confidence. Spirits started lifting the minute Ted Kennedy walked on stage. Since Teddy, we've heard fine speeches by Michelle Obama and Joe Biden and double barreled barn burners by the Clintons. Still, a Thursday Gallup poll has the race tied; other polls give Obama a slim edge. Barack is a gifted orator. Director Spike Lee told CNN he doesn't worry about how Obama will do tonight, because he knows that, like a great athlete, he'll rise to the occasion. I hope he's right, but Babe Ruth never had this much riding on just one at bat. Everybody knows Obama can paint portraits. Tonight he must also draw a blueprint. It's hard doing both at once. He also needs to connect intimately with the American people; hard to do while painting a portrait and drawing a blueprint and even harder while looking out on a live audience of 75,000 from a set that makes 'Ai ...

In August of 1972 I sat in a bar with some buddies watching the Republican Convention on a TV. It was "Pat Nixon Appreciation Night" in Miami, complete with tribute film and a phalanx of fresh faced kids dressed as cheerleaders. The theme was "Pat's special connection to young people" something I'd missed but a point worth making as Viet Nam tore generations asunder. At the finale Pat appeared. Her remarks went something like this: 'Thank you, young people. Young people, thank you. Thank you, thank you, young people.' Then, like the dream of our reconciliation, she was gone. At this convention the theme is again reconciliation. The country isn't nearly as divided as it was under Nixon, but Nixon's heirs work overtime to make it feel as if it were. And wounds of the primaries are fresh. On Monday Michelle Obama, African American daughter of Chicago's South Side who made it on merit to Princeton and Harvard, had her work cut out for her. Comparing Michelle to Pat isn't fair. Listening to Michelle I remembered every speech by any First Lady but Hillary I've heard since and thought wow, she's amazing. Republican commentators expressed "disappointment" that the speech "lacked substance". These are the folks who berated Hillary's wonkishness and celebrated Nixon and the Bush wives for keeping to themselves. Michelle's speech was profound in a way no laundry list of issues could be. Like her husband, she speaks bravely of intimate thing ...

I packed for Denver still hoping for Hillary. I'd never seen a major campaign miss a move this obvious. But unable to reconcile himself or many of his supporters to the idea Obama at least went with a very plausible alternative. Joe Biden adds experience, foreign policy expertise, a certain old slipper familiarity, at least to Washington types, and when he isn't in full-throttle-expound mode, a pleasant almost folksy charm. A Scranton born Catholic, he helps in states where Obama got swept in the primaries and that he must now sweep in the general election. If Biden can get the whole ready, aim, fire thing in the right order he'll be a great running mate. His warmth complements and calms. There's still excitement in Obama's base but restiveness in other places; in a few, even creeping despondency. It's all overdone. There's cause for concern, but certainly not alarm. Bill Clinton trailed heading into his first convention. Of fourteen presidential races since World War II, five had margins of 2% or less. In the four we call landslides--`56, `64, `72 and `84-- the loser got 40% of the vote. In presidential elections, close calls are the rule, not the exception. Still, we're in a dead heat when all other signs would point to a landslide: The middle class is being slowly hollowed out. The so called 'Republican brand' has been taken off the shelves. McCain makes Bob Dole look like Justin Timberlake. So what gives? For two months Obama ...

There are 42 NFL scouts and general managers in attendance at tonight's Wake Forest-Clemson game, representing 26 teams. It's quite a group. Among those listed on the seating chart are Indianapolis' Bill Polian and Green Bay's Ted Thompson. So who are they here to watch, anyway? Let's hazard a guess: 1. Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry. At 6-3, 247, he's got NFL size and looks like a first-round pick. 2. Clemson defensive lineman Da'Quan Bowers. A true freshman, he's got a shot to go in the top 10 of the draft when the time comes. 3. Clemson quarterback Cullen Harper. 4. Wake defensive backs Alphonso Smith and Chip Vaughn. 5. A smattering of Clemson skill players — receivers Aaron Kelly and Jacoby Ford and backs James Davis and C.J. Spiller. 6. The kickers — although with Wake's Sam Swank doubtful, that'd only be Mark Buchholz. 7. Clemson safety Michael Hamlin (6-3, 205). 8. Neither team has any senior offensive linemen, although Wake starts four juniors and Clemson two. ...

Yesterday, Valleywag wrote that Microsoft was canning its $300 million ad campaign featuring Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld after only two commercials. Today, it turns out the ads won't be pulled , just reformulated. Microsoft's campaign drew a mix of condemnation and praise for its odd approach to bolstering its image by ignoring the mud Apple and critics are slinging at Vista: Some found the new ads too confusing, while others — including us here at DVICE — were curious to see where its was all going . While ad agency Crispin Porter & Bogusky has finished another spot featuring Gates and Seinfeld, it looks like we won't be enjoying their company for much longer — at least not with a Microsoft logo tacked on. Looks like the software giant wants the ad firm to concentrate on answering Mac's ongoing "I'm a Mac, and I'm a PC" ad war in a similar style, but with a twist. Microsoft will showcase 60 of its own real employees and tell its own story, a bit like how the Democratic National Convention had a "real Americans talking" segment, and ExxonMobile is running commercials featuring employees . Bill Gates and other celebrities may still be used, though no word on if Seinfeld will continue to show up. To add an air of authenticity to the commercials, all of Microsoft's employees will also be accompanied by their respective email addresses. So now the question is: Will the pride and joy of real computer technicians Curry the favor of t ...

Co-chairs for the Rural Agenda for Senator Barack Obama joined together to support the senator in his presidential campaign in a conference call on Monday, Oct. 6.  Sen. Ken Salazar, Rep. John Salazar. State Sen. Jim Isgar and State Rep. Kathleen Curry told members of the press that Sen. Obama "gets it" when it comes to issues facing rural Americans. The Co-Chairs will be touring rural communities in Colorado throughout the next few days to gather support for the Obama campaign. "Sen. Obama understands community and family values. This translates to rural communities," stated National Rural Vote Director Todd Campbell. Obama has worked with agricultural groups in Illinois, Campbell said, and has conducted over 200 Town Hall meetings in rural America. Sen. Ken Salazar said that Sen. Obama was his "good friend," and that Obama would be a "strong voice for rural Colorado." Salazar lauded Obama's understanding of rural issues and his "champion" support for the Farm Bill.  He also mentioned that President George W. Bush vetoed the Farm Bill and that Sen. John McCain, who is running against Obama for the presidential office, supported that veto. "Obama is 100 percent behind our efforts to strengthen rural America," Sen. Salazar said. "President Bush and Sen. McCain are not." Rep. John Salazar compared Sen. Obama's history in standing up for veterans to Sen. John McCain's history, saying that Obama stood strongly for veterans while McCa ...

Green Party Leader Elizabeth May shares a laugh with her daughter Victoria Cate May Burton on the VIA train. Photo: Bill Curry/The Globe and Mail. "Shut her up! Her issues cannot become part of the discourse.! We can't risk the exposure. SHUT HER THE F*** UP!!!" say the powers that be. May's not laughing anymore today, even though the actions against her have exposed the fundamental hypocrisy and innate absurdity embedded in the current campaign. Democracy indeed. Jim comment: Having worked with her over a three-year period I know May has a good mind and a large heart but today she revealed she is still a little too exuberant, a little too human, forgetting in what an ugly power game she is now involved (this is the first day of her first federal election campaign after all). Based on my experience, I say she'll become more disciplned soon, very soon. Greens can't participate in leaders' debates, networks rule CBC News Canada September 8, 2008 Canada's broadcasters will not allow the Green Leader Elizabeth May to participate in the leaders' debates during the federal election campaign, the networks announced Monday afternoon. The consortium of networks, which includes the CBC, said three of Canada's parties were opposed to May's inclusion, but did not give more details. In recent days, the Conservatives, Bloc Québécois and the NDP have all expressed their opposition to May joining the debates. ... The Greens' leader immediately ca ...

It's hardly controversial to say that some Republicans sometimes view the UN with deep suspicion. And often , during election season, the UN serves as a useful whipping boy for (typically Republican) candidates trying to Curry favor with a small but enthusiastic element of the Republican base. So, it was rather welcome to see that the portion of the GOP Convention Platform discussing the United Nations, while tough, is far from an anti-UN screed. In fact, parts of it are an out right rejection of far right's preferred approach to the United Nations. Historically, some Republicans (and here I am referencing House Republicans in the 1990s) have sought to condition U.S. payment to the UN on UN reform; that is, Republican lawmakers sought to withhold UN funding until the UN adopted American-mandated reforms. Although smart reform as a mechanism for making the UN as efficient as possible and the most capable to fulfill its many important missions, would, without a doubt, be a positive development, tying those reforms to UN dues is a horrible idea. More recently, there has been a movement afoot to overhaul UN funding to a system of voluntary contributions. During his waning months as UN Ambassador, John Bolton argued forcefully for this approach, under which we would "pay for what we want, instead of paying a Bill for what we get." Currently, the UN is funded though assessed dues. The United States is the highest dues paying member of the Un ...
