It's National Cellphone Courtesy Month, and my cellphone, Mr. Bilbo, which I'd had since like 2000 (named after a Kids in the Hall sketch, not Baggins), celebrated by going AWOL last week just long enough for me to think that I'd lost him. He knew that would be the only way I'd actually get off my butt and replace him. (I searched for him for two days before I agreed to upgrade. After I made the purchase, I found him on my kitchen floor.) While my friends initially thanked Mr. Bilbo for his sacrifice, some of them might now be having second thoughts. I'd never texted before I got this phone (ever), and I went a little finger-happy over the weekend. Apparently, I misjudged who needed to know asap that I'd just seen Tom Cavanaugh (pictured) on the street. Me: Just saw tom cavanaugh on 8th ave. Heart him. At least he didn't see me twist my ankle. That happened well before then. Jim gaffigan almost got to see that.Michael Slezak: Whose number is this?Me: Lol. Mandi's. Slezak: You have a text prob... I guess these first few weeks will be trial and error as I figure out my friends' individual text styles. (Celeb sighting + possible humiliation isn't worthy for everyone?) From now on, I will only expect my friend Eva to receive any and all texts from me without complaint. We never judge one another. Some texts she's sent me: "Paradise Hotel marathon yesterday -- missed the first half. Boo!" and "Just rode the elevator with Janice Dickins ...

The J.R.R. Tolkien classic The Hobbit , a prequel to the Lord of the Rings series is set to be made into another blockbuster filming later this year. Word is that James McAvoy will be playing the original hobbit , Bilbo Baggins, who is eventually uncle to Elijah Wood's Frodo Baggins from the LOTR trilogy. I think James would make a great hobbit! With cute furry feet! Doesn't he already look super whimsical in that bubble photo below? James just needs to be aware that Elijah Wood hasn't really done anything since the trilogy -- but does he really need to? You know that kid made enough bank from playing a hobbit to support him and his future children the rest of their lives. Seriously. Wake up and get that paycheck already, James! More photos of James McAvoy from Mean magazine are after the jump. ...

By Emily Geiger With all the smoking ban fury to deal with, I haven’t even gotten a chance to mention that Ramona Cunningham pled guilty to 8 counts in the CIETC case. She has yet to be sentenced, but news reports say that she should expect 6 ½ to 8 years plus fines, which is about 2 years less than she would have received if she had been found guilty on all charged counts. She will still likely face civil lawsuits to recover the money pilfered from job training agency. Overall, I’m pretty satisfied with this outcome. Seven years in the fed pen is nothing to sneeze at. While Ramona’s lawyer, Bill Kutmus, creeps me out, he does have a point that murderers and rapists usually don’t get that kind of time. And speaking of Bill Kutmus, whenever I see that guy, I keep thinking that he reminds me of someone, but I could never figure out who until today. Two words: Bilbo Baggins.  This guy screams hobbit more than Sean Astin.  I think we need to take a look at his feet.                                        Bilbo                                                    Bilbo's long lost twin? ...

Filed under: Classics , Sci-Fi & Fantasy , Casting , New Line , RumorMonger , Peter Jackson , Remakes and Sequels But they aren't going to tell us who it is! Guillermo Del Toro spoke to Empire and revealed a few more Hobbit details. We can all breathe a bit easier because according to the director, it will be "at least a year before we announce any casting." So, this may be the last story you read on The Hobbit for quite awhile. That doesn't mean they aren't hard at work trying to find the main hobbit himself. Says Del Toro: "We are writing based on [Ian Holm's performance], but other than that, we have ideas [of who could play him]. I can tell you that it's down to a few names that we all agree upon. And that our first choice ...completely, magically, we said the same name. All of us!" Somewhere, there is an actor who has no idea he's in the running. And it is obviously not an unknown if the entire team came up with the same individual. Who are you, future Bilbo? My old pick was Martin Freeman , who I always thought resembled Ian Holm a bit, and could do befuddled really really well. Jamie Bell always ruled the day with my geek friends, but I think he's become a bit too chiseled for a hobbit. Let's hear your own picks. And toss out some impossible, mind-reading guesses as to who the LOTR team could have landed on. Remember, it will be the last Hobbit story you have for awhile -- especially if Christopher Tolkien wins his court ca ...

The Waverly Inn may very well be the new Café Society, but we don’t see anyone lying around in settees there. Least of all its star chef John DeLucie, who likes a meal you can eat with one fork and has a story or two to tell in his upcoming memoir, The Hunger. Nightly they come, exiting chauffeured limos and Maybachs, rushing by the paparazzi, and entering a Bilbo Baggins-sized door into the magical labyrinth called The Waverly Inn. There’s no need to name them. “They” have all been there, whether strolling from neighboring West Village brownstones (“Hey, Hah-vee! Can we get one shot?”), or “just in” from Los Angeles. Cannes. Sundance. Turks. Rehab. ...

To the unwitting observer, that massive new hill in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park might appear to be the work of geology. Closer inspection reveals skylights and solar panels on its surface, and a steady stream of trucks running by, carting in hundreds of animal and plant specimens—including a colony of live penguins and an 75-foot whale skeleton. The hill—part Bilbo Baggins, part Doctor Doolittle—is in fact the new $484 million California Academy of Sciences . When the museum and research center opens in Septem-ber, it will include a four-story rain forest, a 212,000-gallon aquarium (enough to fill 100 cement trucks), and 410,000 square feet of lab and exhibition space. The rolling green roof is more than decorative: The sod insulates in the winter and wicks in cool air in the summer, and the roof’s plants keep millions of gallons of water from washing off into storm drains. The roof helped win the building a platinum-level LEED certificate for its sustainable advances, but Renzo Piano, the museum’s architect, says the design goes beyond that: “We’re not LEED because we’re clever. We’ve made up a new alphabet of architecture.” ...

By Doug Apple Manager, Wave94 Single and Obsessed It was Sméagol’s birthday – and his life was about to change forever.  He went fishing with Déagol, who was pulled into the water by a fish.  When he surfaced he had a ring. This ring had a powerful effect on Sméagol.  It instantly became his obsession.  He demanded that Déagol give it to him as a birthday present, and when he refused, Sméagol strangled him and took it. The ring was an evil influence, but Sméagol loved it.  It ruled his life.  Because of the ring, he was driven from his family, and he ended up living underground, hating the sunlight One day he lost the ring in the darkness, and eventually it was found by Bilbo Baggins.  For years Sméagol obsessed over the ring.  His life’s goal was to get it back. Years later, when the ring was about to be destroyed in the fires of Mount Doom, Sméagol got his hands on it one last time – then fell over the edge.  And even as he plummeted to his death, the last word on his lips was the nickname he had given the ring… “My Precious.” Now let me talk to some of you single people.  Like Sméagol, do you have an obsession with a ring?  I’m talking about a wedding ring, a symbol of “true love.” A lot of single people are obsessed with finding “true love.”  Like Sméagol’s ring, it is always on their mind.  This obsession can lead them into very dark places.  Seemingly good Christian people might find themselves at bars in their search f ...

ACTOR Christopher Lee now says he will not reprise his role as wizard Saruman in the upcoming Hobbit films - but he would play the evil dragon Smaug. The first Hobbit movie will be made in New Zealand, along with a follow-up film to bridge the 59 years between that story and the Lord of the Rings trilogy, which was also filmed there. But veteran actor Lee, now 86, says it's just too far for him to travel. So, rather than go on location to play Saruman, he's offered to stay in England and provide the dragon's voice instead. Smaug (pictured right and below) is the main antagonist in The Hobbit, guarding a huge hoard of treasure inside Lonely Mountain. Bilbo Baggins, the hobbit of the story's title, has to lead a band of dwarves on a perilous expedition to reclaim the mountain and its treasure, encountering trolls, goblins, wargs, giant spiders and wood-elves as the story leads towards a climactic battle. Lee spoke earlier this month at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic. Asked if he'd return to Middle Earth - the world of author JRR Tolkien's Hobbit and Lord of the Rings tales - he said: "To Middle Earth, yes; to New Zealand...I'm not sure. "You have to understand me, they're the nicest people in the world and it's the most beautiful country on earth, it really is. Making those films was a wonderful, wonderful experience and very important - the biggest box office in history, which is incredible. "No ...
