Madison - Bret Bielema was quite candid today in discussing several aspects of Wisconsin's loss to Ohio State. We'll have a story up on our site later tonight detailing his view of what happened to UW's defense on Terrelle Pryor's 11-yard touchdown run with 1 minute 8 seconds left. (Here is a brief preview: Bielema wasn't aware of the extent to which UW's defense was disorganized and misaligned until Sunday when the staff reviewed the video.) Until then, here are some of his comments regarding the clock/timeout issues UW endured. UW burned its first timeout in the first quarter after tailback John Clay gained 3 yards for a first down at the Ohio State 37. UW called a timeout with 6 minutes 50 seconds left in the half and 11 seconds left on the 40-second play clock. Insignificant? Not when you consider that the decision meant the Badgers, who wisely used their second timeout on defense during the Buckeyes' final possession of the half, had just one timeout left when they took over at their 20 with 52 seconds left. That decision, coupled by a mistake by wide receiver Kyle Jefferson, cost UW a chance for a touchdown and a 14-7 lead. Instead UW settled for a 20-yard field goal on the final play of the half. Jefferson's mistake came when he failed to get out of bounds in front of the UW bench after his 7-yard reception on the first play of the drive. Ohio State defensive back Donald Washington kept Jefferson in the field of the play a ...

Madison - Upset with what he believed were two blown calls in Wisconsin's 21-17 loss to Tennessee in the 2008 Outback Bowl, UW coach Bret Bielema vowed he would never schedule a game worked by an officiating crew from the Western Athletic Conference. Well, when No. 10 UW (2-0) faces host and No. 21 Fresno State (1-1) Saturday night, Bielema will see a WAC crew on the field. "The contract was written a while ago," Bielema, in his third season as UW's head coach, said today during the Big Ten Conference coaches' teleconference. "We're going to have WAC officials out there. A lot of times when you're playing an away game...you'll have neutral officials... "Fresno State comes here next year and we're scheduled to have Big Ten officials." Bielema preferred to have a Big Ten crew work the game this week and suggested to Fresno State officials that a WAC crew could work the 2009 game between the teams, set for Sept. 12 at Camp Randall Stadium. "They weren't willing to go for that," Bielema said. The irony, of course, is that the crew that drew Bielema's ire in the Outback Bowl was not from the WAC. That crew was from the Mountain West Conference. ...
