A Santa Ana big rig accident at the four-way stop intersection of Saint Andrew Place and Poplar Street has killed a 14-year-old boy riding his bike in the crosswalk, according to a news article in The Orange County Register . Santa Ana police Cpl. Jose Gonzalez said Santa Ana resident Pedro Martinez, 51, was headed west on Saint Andrew Place in a big rig tractor when he hit Esteban Nunez. Nunez reportedly was riding his bicycle southbound in the northbound lane of Poplar and had entered the street intersection without stopping at the stop sign. The boy, a resident of that neighborhood, was not wearing a helmet when he was hit by the moving big rig and dragged under. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. This is such a tragic and heart wrenching accident. Please keep the boy and his family in your prayers. The Insurance Institute For Highway Safety (IIHS) estimates that 770 bicyclists were killed in crashes with motor vehicles in 2006. The most serious injuries among the majority of those killed are to the head, highlighting the importance of wearing a bicycle helmet. From poets to politicians, people create their own blogs to inform, promote, editorialize and share beliefs. But more creative uses are emerging from a seemingly increasing group of these citizen journalists. North Andover resident Lisa Kelley, who trains in Boxford every week, is finding her blog to be an effective motivational tool to help her eventually conquer a 100-mile bike ride. “It makes me be accountable to myself,” Kelley said about the blog that contains a running tally of the miles she rides each week. “I know a few people go in regularly and look for posts so I try to update it a few times a week.” Kelley’s goal: go from novice Bicyclist to a century rider, one who rides in a 100-mile race, in 18 weeks. Seven weeks in, her blog is documenting her progress to a Sept. 20 century ride. She created the online journal on Mother’s Day and has been using it her to express her own thoughts about her training and gather feedback from other bikers. It also allows a view of the larger picture. “It helps me see, visually, the progress I’m making,” Kelley said about the benefit from be able to look at past entries and responses from readers. With comments coming from other road bike enthusiasts, the North Andover mother gathers public opinion about issues such as listening to IPods while riding or discovers tips on how to increase your average speed.
