Wisconsin can put a big smiley face on its bike maps, according to the League of American Bicyclists. The cycling advocacy group ranked the Badger State as the second-most Bicycling friendly state in the nation, according to the ratings released late last week. Wisconsin scored well for its designated bike trails, signage and mapping, according to Andy Clark, president of the advocacy organization. The state rankings were the first for the group, which is well-known for ranking cities on their bike friendly merits. The scoring included six categories, ranging from infrastructure to enforcement of cycling-related laws. The survey questionaire wa submitted by the State Department of Transportation. Much of Wisconsin's strength as a cycling friendly location comes from its vast network of paved secondary roads, those with fewer than 500 cars per day, according to Jack Hirt, director of the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin . Those paved roads helped in the rankings, which put Wisconsin ahead of Midwest neighbors, Minnesota (#5) Illinois (#8) and Michigan (#12). To overtake Washington for the #1 ranking, road builders and planners in Wisconsin need to initiate a "complete streets" program to include lanes or similar accommodations in all new road projects, Hirt said. Other needs include better links connecting urban bike trails to rural roads and adding bike racks to buses in Milwaukee County, Hirt said. ...

Wednesday I rode my bike to work. So, logically, Wednesday saw me riding my bike home from work. That was not the most pleasant task. I rode directly into some really strong winds -- I figure about 40MPH -- for 2.5 miles, and for the other 8, they were crosswinds. I checked the weather about 30-60 minutes after I got home, after it had calmed down a bit, and they were saying gusts to 35. So I figure 40 or more when it was really going is about right. I was using the lowest possible gear on my 24-speed bike for a good part of that, for the first time ever. The weather also indicated this was due to remnants from Gustav. So now I can -- almost -- say I rode my bike through a hurricane. I had to chuckle a bit today when I read a different bike blog -- someone who has been doing this a lot longer than me -- say he chickened out and took the bus because of 15MPH winds. Out here in Kansas farm country, there isn't a bus. If I ride the bike to work in the morning, that's the only way I'm getting back home. Kinda character-building, I guess. Or crazy, depending on your view. I'm getting some strange looks lately as I've been mentioning that it's about time for me to prepare for Bicycling in the winter. Oh, and did I mention that 15MPH is a breeze out here? ...

Bicycles have been touted as one of the best ways to stem the over-reliance oil powered transportation and, at the same time, can significantly improve people’s health. In Zimbabwe, bicycles are increasingly becoming popular, albeit for a different reason: money and economics. With a current world record inflation of 11,2 million percent and rising on a daily basis, many people in Zimbabwe are struggling to make ends meet with very meager salaries. As a means to cope with high transport costs (a product of the Zimbabwe’s hyperinflationary economy), many workers have taken to Bicycling in their hordes. Previously stigmatized as a sign of poverty, bicycles have taken on a new form as a means of affordable transportation to work. Read more of this story » ...
