Chris Matthews, on Monday night's "Hardball," speculated that Republicans were playing the race card, when they made fun of Barack Obama's experience as a community organizer, even going as far to say they're using the phrase like a "bullwhip." In a segment with NBC's Chuck Todd and pollster Stuart Rothenberg, Matthews suspiciously noted that Republicans like Sarah Palin and Rudy Giuliani, at last week's GOP convention, were "giggling" over the "community organizer" title as he pondered: " Is this the new 'welfare queen?'" Then a little later in the program, in a segment with the Financial Times' Chrystia Freeland and the Independent Women's Forum's Michelle Bernard, Matthews returned to the subject as he declared: "It seems to me that the use of the word, 'community organizer,' is almost like a bullwhip." Joe Biden to "dare reach over and help" Gov. Sarah Palin "with her chair." In addition, on October 2, New York Times reporter Katharine Q. Seelye asked on the Times blog The Caucus, "Will Mr. Biden help Ms. Palin with her chair?" The question is one that presumably would not be asked if the two candidates were the same gender. In addition, the premise of the question itself is false; according to the debate format rules on the Commission on Presidential Debates website, Biden and Palin will be "standing at podiums," a fact Seelye later acknowledged in an update to her post. During Hardball, Matthews said: "Here's a great question. It's not in the Brooks Brothers' book of etiquette. I'll ask you, Michelle, but here's the question. As they're sitting down -- it's going to be a sit-down debate -- and she's having trouble with her chair -- you know how people sit down, they have to pull them in." Dreadfull, simply dreadfull. There is no wireless internet access in rooms, just a dialup socket. Room too hot, rough thin towels and uncomfortable bed. Small portable TV offering 5 yes 5 channels. Wooo. They couldn't even manage Freeview. 'Breakfast' was a lie. All it consisted of was some cereal in plastic containers, soft (not crispy) baguettes and some Bernard Matthews Turkey Ham on a plate. Oh and a few sachets of Philly. Not even real coffe... ...
