The man renowned for “candy bombing” during the Berlin Airlift will make an appearance 7 p.m. Monday at the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library & Museum. Gail Halvorsen, a retired U.S. Air Force pilot known as the “Candy Bomber” for dropping candy using miniature parachutes, will share stories about his part in President Truman’s response to the Soviet blockade of west Berlin in June 1948. Halvorsen will be joined by Roger Miller, a senior historian in the Air Force Historical Studies office and author of “To Save a City: The Berlin Airlift.” Afterwards, Miller will sign copies of his book. In honor of Halvorsen’s heroic act, audience members will be treated to chocolate donated by Russell Stover. The program is included with museum admission, which is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors 65 and older and $3 for children ages 6 to 15. On July 14, the museum will be open until 9 p.m., allowing visitors to explore Cold War exhibits, including 594 miniature airplanes representing the number used daily during the Airlift as well as an interactive audio station providing first-hand accounts of the Airlift. Seating is limited. Reservations can be made by calling 816-268-8221. ...
