Wonderful stuff on an Olympic off station this evening: Synchronized swimming on Oxygen. There, amid the ads for "Janice Dickinson's Modeling School," came international duos in showy swimsuits, big smiles, waterproof makeup and hair melded by Knox gelatin. Routines began from the time the women's country was called, marching to the pool and posing a bit before hitting the water. Just the marches themselves were amusingly exaggerated and, of course, synchronized. Though it may not look like it, the 3 1/2 minute artistic routines to music ranging from Beethoven to "Shindler's List" to "Beetlejuice" in water have underpinning in very difficult technical skills, mostly in keeping ones legs up and kicking, or thrusting above the water in what are called "rockets." With all the eggbeaters and spins and rockets and kicks, the week's worth of swimming competitoins look like brute force by comparison. Yes, sychronized swimming has been dismissed as a relic from the days of Esther Williams and ridiculed most famously in the 1984 "Saturday Night Live" skit by Harry Shearer and Martin Short. But watching it for a while is pretty mesmerizing and amazing. And no other athletes smile quite as much through their whole routines. ...
