Pat won an auction for an RV on eBay last week. He bid a little over $15,000 for a vehicle that was listed for sale by the RV company for $29,999 on other sites. Pat was worried that Nelson's RV might try to find a loophole to cancel the auction since he'd scored such a great deal, so he immediately sent his required $250 deposit to them and asked for someone at Nelson's RV to contact him. Eventually, after some run around, he got the following email—with one of the ballsiest excuses we've ever seen. We are devastated with our discovery this morning of a swarm of Africanized killer Bees in the 2007 Sandpiper 325RG 5th wheel that you have a deposit on. We have used multiple poisons in an attempt eradicate them. We have vacuumed up the Bees that covered the floors, cabinets, and furniture. We tried to clean the traces of honey on the countertops and cabinet tops as completely as possible. This is one of the terrible acts of Mother Nature we have in Arizona. As best we can determine, the Bees entered from the door that had been left opened yesterday morning. The interior of this trailer does have a strong chemical odor from the poison and is TOXIC. Our insurance regulations prohibit us from selling this 5th wheel at this time. Due to these circumstances beyond our control, we are unable to proceed with the sale of this 2007 Sandpiper 325RG 5th wheel. This vehicle is unsafe for occupancy or use. We are therefore refunding your deposit ...

Like a lot of you, I live in the city, where food miles are measured by how many blocks away the nearest pizza parlor is, and growing one’s own food is often limited to a windowbox of parsley, sage, rosemary, or thyme. But a burgeoning subculture of city-bound agrarians are changing the urban landscape, back lot by garden plot, planting fruit trees, cultivating crops, and even raising livestock. Not livestock as in horses and cows perhaps, but livestock as in chickens, ducks, and Bees. The rationale behind raising your own food in the concrete jungle is as timeless as it is timely. After all, the DIY impulse is deeply rooted in the urge for self-sufficiency on every level, not just mechanical ones. Engaging in the food chain as an active participant inspires new (or rather much older) ways of thinking about food and its source. And as the justification of shipping food thousands of miles to be sold as pre-packaged processed “product” becomes less easy to stomach, the more conscientious, not to mention delicious, eating locally appears. Of course raising urban livestock, particularly fowl, does require certain considerations of space. Apartment and condo-dwellers without yard access might have to forgo the “to-raise-or-not-to-raise” discussion altogether. Many cities and counties have regulations in place as to how many feet away from a housing unit urban livestock must be kept, and how many animals are allowed per household. But once ...

Is (or was , since it sounds quaint now) the phrase "the birds and the Bees" mostly an American thing or is it also used in other english-speaking countries as a euphemism in reference to sex education. What other euphemisms or idioms are used around the world within the context of sex education (not formal sex education in a classroom setting, more along the lines of "The Talk" parents have with their kids). I'm interested in phrases used in other languages too. ...
