Seattle Mariners pitcher Erik Bedard, out since July with a tight left shoulder, has decided to undergo surgery Friday. The Mariners issued a statement Tuesday saying exploratory arthroscopic surgery will be performed by Dr. Lewis Yocum, who is expected to remove any unhealthy tissue of foreign material from the labrum in the shoulder. Mariners vice president Lee Pelekoudas says Bedard decided on the operation after two months of unsuccessful efforts to rehabilitate the shoulder. ...

BY ADAM RONIS Erik Bedard will undergo surgery next week for a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder. He will miss the beginning of the 2009 season. He went 6-4 with a 3.67 ERA and 72/37 K/BB ratio in 81 innings. He last pitched on July 4. He had Tommy John surgery five years ago and his fantasy prospects for next season look bleak. ...

Now for an interesting possible scenario involving injured pitcher Erik Bedard. He will undergo surgery to repair his torn labrum and remove a cyst from his shoulder and he will probably be lost for much or all of the 2009 season. Can't imagine the Mariners are going to tender him a contract for next year, since they would be unable (under baseball's Basic Agreement) to cut his $7 million salary by more than 20 percent and he is eligible for free agency after the season. They'll be tempted to hold onto him to avoid the embarrassment of releasing a guy who cost them their best outfield prospect, a top pitching prospect and a 30-save guy (along with pitchers Kam Mickolio and Tony Butler), but they'll probably come to their senses before throwing nearly $6 million more down a hole. Good money after bad. So, you can figure on him being non-tendered and becoming a free agent in December and then trying to sign with somebody at who knows what price. Don't be surprised if his agent comes back to the Orioles with some kind of proposal, because there's some talk out there that a frustrating year in Seattle has made Erik nostalgic for his buddies in Baltimore. Would you want him back to rehab and then perhaps be the No. 1 or No. 2 starter in 2010? Frankly, I don't care for the kid, but that might be the kind of bold move that gets the Orioles a premier starting pitcher at a reasonable price at a point when the rebuilding plan is near fruit ...

This could be bad news. This could be not news. What this can't be is good news. After going the rehab route for a couple months and seeing little in the way of progress, Bedard will undergo exploratory surgery on the 26th, which basically means Dr. Yocum's going to play What's Wrong With This Picture? with the important bits of Erik's left wing until he gets bored. The best-case scenario is that there's not much wrong and nothing major has to be stitched or stapled, but the possibility exists that they're going to discover something bad, which would obviously endanger much, if not all of Bedard's 2009. Which would suck. Although hey it would give us a reason to hang on to Washburn. So that's something. I'm not going to write Bedard off, not yet; for all we know, he'll be patched up and ready to go in no time. But I was hoping it wouldn't come to this, because I'm easily spooked by a pitcher getting his shoulder cut open. There are all kinds of nasty demons they could find in there that would put Bedard on the shelf for a while. It's pretty much the last place you'd like to see a pitcher get the knife. This is our reality, though, so I suppose we've little choice but to hope for the best. We didn't get to see the Erik Bedard we thought we were getting in 2008. Hopefully he's able to show his face in 2009. Because the Erik Bedard we thought we were getting is one of the best pitchers on the planet, and the longer he's gone, the wo ...

Erik Bedard, the best 70-pitch starter in the big leagues, has decided to have shoulder surgery , officially ending his season. Bedard had struggled with shoulder problems all season and last pitched on July 4. He was the Mariners' biggest off-season signing last year, acquired in a trade with the Orioles for 5 players. The team expected the lefty to be the ace of the starting rotation this year. Instead, Bedard started only 15 games this season, and finished with a 6-4 record. ...

I can see from the prior blog post that not a whole lot of you are interested in the real-world Mariners today. Who can blame you? Here's another dose of it, the team's 2009 schedule that just got released. It's a toughie from the get-go, with lots of up-front road games and matchups against playoff contenders from this year and possible threats next season. The way things are shaping up, the M's could be out of it by Week 2 and roughly 15 games behind at about the one-month mark. So, let's take a break from reality. The return of a cyber Erik Bedard off the DL to the MLB2K Mariners was a resounding success today, with the lefty going all nine innings of a 17-0 demolition of the Detroit Tigers. Bedard struck out eight and didn't walk anyone as the homer-happy M's took Comerica Park by storm and left with a series victory. Seattle now sits at 82-60 with a 2 1/2 game lead on the Texas Rangers in the AL West. I told you these M's are lethal with the long ball. When that gets going, they can put a lot of hurt on opponents real quick. Hanley Ramirez had a career-day, going 5-for-6 with three home runs. But the game wasn't put completely out of reach until the M's scored a dozen runs from the sixth inning onward. The final 10 runs came in the last three innings, once a depleted Tigers bullpen began throwing intentionally at the M's, leading to ejections and a whole lot of sub-par relief from the lower rungs of the relief crew. It was s ...

Filed under: Mariners , AL West , MLB Injuries It's been nearly a month that the Mariners announced that Erik Bedard was most likely done for the season. Yesterday, Bedard revealed that he'll likely also miss much of next year, as well. From the Seattle Times : "We knew what it was after the MRI -- it's a tear in the labrum and a cyst," Bedard said. "Surgery was always an option, but you want it to be the last option. You're never 100 percent sure what will happen in surgery." Unfortunately, after weeks of rehab and throwing off flat ground and a handful of bullpen sessions, Bedard's shoulder failed to respond, meaning the last option is now the only option. "The surgery we're talking about can be six to nine months (of rehabilitation) or it can be longer," Bedard said. "To not be able to pitch, that's the most frustrating part of the whole season. To not be able to do what you love is hard." Six months seems overly optimistic, but if he pulls it off, he'd be returning to the mound in late March, just when the rest of his teammates are finishing up spring training. He'd still need a few weeks on a minor league rehab stint to rebuild his arm strength, meaning even in a best-case scenario he'll still probably miss at least the first month. Considering eight or nine months of rehab is probably more realistic, it's pretty easy to write off Bedard making any contribution before the 2009 All-Star break.   Permalink  |  Email this  |  Li ...
