No, it’s not a new reality T.V. show searching for hot young writers aspiring to become the next Jane Austen, as the title might suggest. Rather, 2007’s Becoming Jane is a behind-the-scenes look at the famous lady herself. It is—allegedly—the story of how Jane Austen became Jane Austen. Starring Anne Hathaway, James McAvoy, Maggie Smith, James [...] ...

The filmmakers aspire to create an Austen-caliber, nuanced story of society, manners, and complications and very nearly succeed. This is a fine bit of speculative fiction but it could never hope to capture the true life and times of the real Jane Austen. ...

Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott star in Role Models as Danny and Wheeler, two salesmen who trash a company truck on an energy drink-fueled bender. Upon their arrest, the court gives them a choice: do hard time or spend 150 service hours with a mentorship program. After one day with the kids, however, jail doesn’t look half bad. Surrounded by annoying do-gooders, Danny struggles with his every neurotic impulse to guide Augie (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) through the trials of Becoming a man. Unfortunately, the guy just dumped by his girlfriend (Elizabeth Banks) has only sarcasm to offer a bashful 16-year-old obsessed with medieval role play. Meanwhile, charming Wheeler tries to trade in an addiction to partying and women to assist a fifth-grader named Ronnie (Bobb’e Thompson) redirect his foul-mouthed ways. It would probably help if Ronnie’s new mentor wasn’t an overgrown adolescent whose idea of quality time includes keggers in Venice Beach. Once the center’s ex-con director (Jane Lynch) gives them an ultimatum, Danny and Wheeler are forced to tailor their brand of immature wisdom to their charges. And if they can just make it through probation without getting thrown in jail, the world’s worst role models will prove that, sometimes, it takes a village idiot to raise a child. ...

Five of the seven Oscarologists giving us their first predix of the year put Anne Hathaway in the best actress race for her performance as the troubled sister in "Rachel Getting Married." And the strong critical support for the film, which opened today, certainly boosts her chances of making the final five. The comedy drama from Oscar-winning director Jonathan Demme scored 84 at Meta Critic and 79 at Rotten Tomatoes. Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times hailed Hathaway for delivering "a career changing performance." As he explains, "With her chopped hair, constant smoking and wraith-from-hell demeanor, Kym calls on aspects of Hathaway, best known for considerably lighter fare like 'The Princess Diaries,' 'The Devil Wears Prada' and 'Becoming Jane,' that simply have not been seen before, and the actress rises to the challenge beautifully, making Kym simultaneously empathetic and outrageous. It's not just that Kym has been an addict, she's done things while under the influence that even she cannot forgive herself for. Yet far from being contrite, Kym is quick to condemn everyone else. Determined to get the consideration she needs to feel whole, she lashes out at what she calls 'the Salem witch trials' atmosphere in her family." For Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly, "The last actress you'd expect to see cast as a self-loathing, frayed-nerves drug casualty is a red-carpet blossom like Hathaway. Yet from the moment she shows ...

Dear Tom, I always assumed the moon came up at dark and set at dawn, just the opposite of the sun, but now I find I was wrong. On Aug. 1, both the moon and sun rose and set within a few minutes of each other. What's the theory of this? Jane Kuntz, Arlington Heights Dear Jane, Triton College astronomer Dan Joyce explains: The moon orbits the Earth on roughly a monthly basis in the same direction the Earth rotates on its axis, thereby permitting the moon to appear either close to or far from the sun. When near the sun, the moon's far side is illuminated and we cannot see it, the phase called new moon. Halfway to Becoming full, we see a half-lit moon (1st quarter), which rises near noon and sets near midnight. The full moon rises at sunset and sets at sunrise . The phase halfway back to new moon from full, also half-lit (3rd quarter) it rises at midnight and sets at noon. ...

Whitney Maiden’s confidence is growing with every swing of her arm. The Nelsonville native was called upon Thursday night in the absence of junior outside hitter Ellen Herman, who has an ankle injury. Maiden contributed 10 kills against Kent to lead the team and added 14 Saturday, a new career-high, to lead the Bobcats to a five-set win over Eastern Michigan. She received the ball for 37 swings Saturday and is Becoming a more-than-capable replacement for the Bobcats’ leader. “(Maiden) had a slow first set, but from there on, she did a great job,” coach Ryan Theis said. “She did well against Kent, and hopefully she keeps rolling.” Maiden credited the team around her for getting her the ball in the proper areas. “My confidence is definitely there, but it has everything to do with the team,” Maiden said. “If the setters give me a good ball, it’s my job to put it down.” In what has become a concerning trend at home, the Bobcats yet again started slow. The match opened with a service error into the net, and the Eagles took control of the first set early, holding off a late Ohio rally. “Apparently, I need to change something about how we’re focusing on that,” Theis said with a smile. The second frame was more tightly contested, with both teams trading kills and benefiting from an abundance of attack and serving errors. After losing the third set, the Bobcats amped up their defense and junior middle blocker Jane Sytsma came alive. Syts ...

Ever since I've heard about Curtis Sittenfield's American Wife I've been wary. It's really not due to the fact that it's based on the life of Laura Bush but that it's fiction that is based on a public person while they are still, you know, alive . The long-time dead don't bother me so much, Jane Austen as an amateur detective? I can handle that. But basing a book on Laura Bush, while her husband is still in office no less? While I'm sure it's meant to be flattering seems a bit...tacky. Sittenfield has a reputation for writing a darned good novel though so I thought that I'd check out what bloggers had to say about this one. If you are unfamiliar with the novel American Wife this is what you need to know - the novel follows the life of Alice Lindgren from growing up in Wisconsin to Becoming America's First Lady. Her husband is priviledged and has a history of problems with drugs and booze. He is also not the most apt public speaker when he deviates from his script. Alice lives with the guilt of having been involved in a car accident that kills her high school boyfriend. Sittenfield has openly admited that Laura Bush was her inspiration, which is just as well because no one would believe her if she tried to say otherwise. Boston Bibliophile liked American Wife but thinks that the material will age quickly once the Bush family leaves the White HOuse. I don't know Sittenfeld's politics, but it seems pretty clear to me that the purpose ...

This campaign is Becoming ridiculous. And let's be honest: it is John McCain's fault. Yesterday, his aides went bonkers over Barack Obama's remark that John McCain and Sarah Palin by campaigning for "change" are putting "lipstick on a pig." The McCain camp quickly arranged a conference call for reporters, during which former Massachusetts Governor Jane Swift, a Republican, accused Obama of mounting a sexist attack on Sarah Palin. (It was not an attack on McCain, because apparently he does not use lipstick.) Obama's comment, as many have pointed out, was not a chauvinist jab at Palin. He was using an expression that, again as many others have pointed out, McCain has also used on occasion. Yet today, the McCain campaign released a web ad that quotes CBS News anchor Katie Couric ("one of the great lessons of that campaign is the continued and accepted role of sexism in American life") and that accuses Obama of mounting a sexist "smear" against Palin. (A lipstick smear?) Of course, Couric was not referring to Obama's remark. Talk about taking a statement out of context. And the ad maliciously plays Obama's lipstick comment over a headline that reads, "Barack Obama on Sarah Palin." This is nothing but deceitful. Worse, while the McCainiacs were falsely charging Obama with sexism (playing the gender card?), they were putting out a recklessly false television ad that claimed Obama had backed legislation in Illinois to teach "comprehensive sex ...

Ryder Cup (Friday-Sunday, Sky Sports 1) It’s something about golf, apparently, but there’s no sign of Jimmy Tarbuck or Sean Connery anywhere… The Daily Show with John Stewart (Friday 8.30pm, More4) Always worth watching if you have an interest in events on the other side of the Atlantic - and right now, who doesn’t? But tonight is especially noteworthy as the special guest joining John Stewart is one Anthony Charles Lynton Blair , know to his friends as Tony. Mmm, that name has a familiar ring to it. The Tudors (Friday 9pm, BBC2) We’re rapidly approaching the climax to this entertaining second season of the daft yet engaging drama, and Queen Anne’s continued attachment to that pretty little head on her shoulders is Becoming more precarious with each passing week. Things aren’t helped this week by the arrival of new lady in waiting Jane Seymour, who Anne is particularly frosty to, but Henry… well, let’s just say that his royal H-ness is his usual welcoming self… Wire in the Blood (Friday 9pm, ITV1) Concluding part of a two-part story in the grisly serial-killer drama. The hunt for a depraved killer continues (well, it is Wire in the Blood , what did you expect?), but things take a turn for the worst when somebody close to the investigation goes missing. Tony Esposito NewsChannel 36 Production Hello everyone, I hope all is well. This weekend I am taking on a new challenge. I will be attending the Leopold Project State Coordinators Meeting in Missouri. Several months ago I was asked by Jane Falkenstein if I would be interested in Becoming the State Coordinator for the Leopold Project. Jane is the current State Coordinator for the Project and an Environmental Educator in Rock Hill. In order to be the State Coordinator I would have to become a certified instructor as well as certified facilitator of the Leopold Project. I went to Atlanta in June for training and became certified as both an instructor and facilitator. I have always been interested in The Leopold Project and the teaching of Aldo Leopold. His teachings and writings fit in very nicely with the Habitat programs I have been giving for many years. Who is Aldo Leopold and what is the Leopold Project? I will give you a short history of both and will finish up next week. The Leopold Project is based on the thoughts and writing of Aldo Leopold. Leopold was considered the father of wildlife management and the wilderness system. He was also a conservationist, forester, teacher, family man, writer, philosopher, and outdoor enthusiast. There were others who were also considered him an ecologist, but Aldo introduced the human element into the mix. How does man and his actions affect the environment? As a professor, Aldo encouraged ...

Ambiance Hair Design, of Rockport, is celebrating its 25th year of business. Owner Dawn Toye opened her hair salon on July 15, 1983 in the Sandy Bay Motel, owned and operated then by her family, Jane and Michael Feldman. Toye, 23 at the time, chose the name “Ambiance” because it was indicative of the vision she had for her salon; she wanted to create “a warm and friendly environment that was upbeat, professional and clean.” Toye has seen her salon undergo many changes in her 25 years as owner, but perhaps none has been more significant than the salon’s recent relocation to Isinglass Place on Railroad Avenue in Rockport. When she opened in 1983, Toye was the only employee; today she has more than 10, including stylists and support staff. Having outgrown its space, a move was essential, and by making the move in July 2007, the salon tripled its square footage, says Toye. Some of the new salon’s features include a bright and spacious reception area, a state-of-the-art color bar, a professional cutting studio and a relaxing wash house that was recently awarded third place in John Paul Mitchell Systems National Wash House Contest. Another significant change for Ambiance happened several years ago when it chose to become a Paul Mitchell Focus salon. By Becoming a “Focus” salon, Ambiance agrees to sell and use exclusively professional Paul Mitchell products, and in return, they receive from Paul Mitchell professional points and invaluable edu ...
