Qingdao I can fully appreciate the frustration for sailors competing with the unpredictable weather - although judging by the conditions in Beijing I'm more than happy to be here. At least you can see the sun! We were supposed to have official practice races on all four courses today, similar to that in football with pre-season matches, but the sea was as calm as a millpond and most of the sailors ended up ashore sitting around waiting for some wind to kick in. There's only so much tinkering, fine tuning or positive thinking you can do. Otherwise it's back to the hotel for guitar sounds, table tennis and DVDs. There's serious competition on the table tennis front. Joe Glanfield chopped British team-mate Stevie Morrison down big time with the bat last night. Morrison, however, would have you believe it was just birthday luck (it was Glanfield's special day on Wednesday). He even tried to convince me in a text message this morning that Glanfield's performance was "far from normal". In the past he's likened it to that from the "chop suey" school of ping-pong, trying to spin the life out of everything. Morrison did try to get his own back by telling the tale of Joe's bargain basement purchase of a cheap, generic MP3 player in Shanghai . Glanfield's helmsman, Nick Rogers , was also in on the act. It came with 8GB of space and pre-loaded with Aqua's classic (I say that in the loosest of terms) 90s track Barbie Girl . It also included a ...

Abstract   Patterns of ectoparasite species richness in mammals have been investigated in various terrestrial mammalian taxa such as primates, ungulates and carnivores. Several ecological or life traits of hosts are expected to explain much of the variability in species richness of parasites. In the present comparative analysis we investigate some determinants of parasite richness in Bats, a large and understudied group of flying mammals, and their obligate blood-sucking ectoparasite, streblid bat flies (Diptera). We investigate the effects of host body size, geographical range, group size and roosting ecology on the species richness of bat flies in tropical areas of Venezuela and Peru, where both host and parasite diversities are high. We use the data from a major sampling effort on 138 bat species from nine families. We also investigate potential correlation between bat fly species richness and brain size (corrected for body size) in these tropical Bats. We expect a relationship if there is a potential energetic trade-off between costly large brains and parasite-mediated impacts. We show that body size and roosting in cavities are positively correlated with bat fly species richness. No effects of bat range size and group size were observed. Our results also suggest an association between body mass-independent brain size and bat fly species richness. From the Bats game notes: • MALONEY TO BE ACTIVATED FRIDAY: LHP Matt Maloney is scheduled to be activated and start Friday, August 8 for the Bats. Maloney has been on the disabled list since July 18 with a right oblique strain. The southpaw made a rehab start with the GCL Reds (Rookie) on July 24 and earned the win (5.2ip, 1h, 9k).' • HOW WAS KOREA?: RHP Justin Lehr signed a contract with the Reds today and will be assigned to Louisville when he gains medical clearance. Lehr began the season with the Bats and in eight starts, went 4-2 with a 2.41 ERA; he made his last start for Louisville May 14 (vs. SWB) before he was released from his contract to sign with a Korean team May 23 (Doosan Bears). Lehr was named the IL Pitcher of the Week to start the season (4/3-4/13); he was the first of two Bats pitchers to leave for Korea (RHP Tom Shearn was transferred to Single-A Billings May 26 and signed with the Samsung Lions in late May: 0-5, 8.34 ERA). ...

Foul balls are not the only things fans need to be worried about at baseball parks. Flying shards of wood from the broken, maple wood Bats of players have made baseball outings even more dangerous for spectators. Susan Rhodes learned this the hard way after having her jaw broken by a fragment of a Dodger player's bat after it came careening into the stands. Surgeons had to place four screws and a titanium plate in Ms. Rhodes' jaw. With more bills to come, she and her attorney are deciding whether to file lawsuit to ensure someone pays for the damage. They are not asking for punitive damages since they feel no one needs to be punished, they just want the risk to be accounted for. There are more incidents that have occurred with maple Bats than ash, each involving the bat snapping between the handle and barrel. Colorado Rockies manager Clint Hurdle estimates at least three Bats break per game. Frank White, former professional baseball player-turned-TV analyst, was so alarmed by the situation, he began counting the number of exploding Bats during spring training and counted at least five per game. Maple wood Bats have only started being used at the end of the 20 th Century after advancements in technology enabled manufacturers to remove moisture from the wood, making it light enough to swing. Presently these Bats are all the rage in the major leagues with almost three-fourths of players using them. Players state the popularity is due ...

Sunday was a day that nothing went right for the Brewers in a 5-0 loss to the Twins. Ben Sheets got rocked for five runs in seven innings pitched. All of the runs the Twins scored came with two out, never a good sign for a pitcher that he's unable to finish an inning. Sheets struck out seven but gave up nine hits, including a two-run home run to Delmon Young in the sixth inning. Sheets fell to 9-2 on the season and his ERA rose to 2.83. Brian Shouse worked a clean eighth inning to finish the game for the Brewers. ...
