"My daughter used it, and we were going to use it for her next baby," due in March, said the Wichita grandmother. Although Neuroth's bassinet was a Graco model -- not the Simplicity one named in the safety alert -- she checked the model number. The convertible “close-sleeper/bedside sleeper” Bassinets, known as 3-in-1 and 4-in-1, are made by Simplicity. The Bassinets’ strangulation hazard is caused by metal bars spaced more than 2Ø inches apart. That’s the maximum allowed under the federal crib safety standard. The metal bars are covered by an adjustable fabric flap attached by Velcro, and the fabric is folded down when the bassinet is converted into a bed-side co-sleeping position. If the velcro isn’t properly re-secured when the flap is adjusted, an infant can slip through the opening and become entrapped in the metal bars and suffocate. Simplicity Bassinets have been implicated in the death of two children, which has resulted in the removal of over 900,000 products. The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that six retailers, including Wal-Mart and Toys R Us , have agreed to stop selling the Simplicity 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 close sleeper models of Bassinets. The announcements have come one day after the CPSC issued a warning regarding these products. These Bassinets are a death trap. With metal bars that are placed farther apart than 2 3/8 inches (the maximum according to industry standards), the cribs pose a very real strangulation hazard . If you have one of these products in your home, you should immediately return it to the store you purchased it from. A six-month old girl in Kansas died last Thursday after being trapped between the horizontal railing of her bassinet and mattress. Her death was ruled an "accidental positional asphyxiation". The CPSC has requested that retailers stop selling the Bassinets, but the company who know owns Simplicity Inc. has refused to cooperate and recall the products. The scale of the danger posed by Simplicity's 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 Bassinets is becoming clearer: over 900,000 Bassinets have been sold with a dangerous design flaw that has led to at least two strangulation deaths in the last year. And despite their claims otherwise, the newly reconstituted Simplicity, aka SFCA, Inc. is still involved. After the CPSC issued their unusual consumer warning last week and began working with the six largest retailers to remove the Bassinets from the market, reporters from the Chicago Tribune bought two of the deadly Bassinets at a local Baby Depot. [The retailers involved in the recall are Wal-Mart, Toys "R" Us, Kmart, Big Lots, Target and J.C. Penney.] The sales clerk incorrectly assured the reporters that the Bassinets were not covered by the recall. This retailer-based recall was necessitated by SFCA's refusal to cooperate with a recall of products made when the company was called Simplicity For Children, or Simplicity, Inc.: SFCA countered by saying Simplicity products are not its responsibility. The CPSC says that several retailers have agreed to recall some Bassinets with a deadly flaw that has resulted in the strangulation deaths of two infants. The parent company that now owns the manufacturer of the Bassinets is refusing to recall the product, claiming that they are not responsible for items that the old company, Simplicity, made before they bought its assets. The Chicago Tribune , heady with the power of Illinois' badass toy laws, stormed into some stores and bought two of the deadly Bassinets. In fact, a Tribune reporter on Thursday bought two Bassinets at Baby Depot at Burlington Coat Factory on the West Side. Before the reporter left the store, an employee checked the model numbers to see whether those versions contained the deadly flaw. She told the reporter they did not. But she was wrong. Both had the dangerous design. Whoops. The Trib says that although the company that bought Simplicity (after it went bankrupt due to a previous crib recall) is denying responsibility for the Bassinets, they say their bassinet had a shipping label with the new company's name on it . SFCA countered by saying Simplicity products are not its responsibility.
