Sixty-one years have slipped by since the one and only time the United States played Cuba in a soccer match on Cuban soil, reports Grahame L. Jones. Saturday night the two countries squared off again, at crumbling Estadio Pedro Marrero in Havana in a Regional qualifying match for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The Americans, who were favored to win by a comfortable margin — and who hoped to make up for the 5-2 defeat in 1947 — arrived by charter aircraft Thursday amid considerable interest from local media and fans. Cuba is more about Baseball than soccer, but the presence of an American team in a country that Americans by law are restricted from visiting is a novelty, and a capacity crowd was expected. And the results? Clint Dempsey scored in the first half and the United States held on to beat Cuba, 1-0, in a sloppy and low-energy World Cup qualifier at Havana, reported the Associated Press.Half of the lights at rain-soaked Pedro Marrero Stadium went out in the 86th minute, causing a brief delay before the final minutes, when Cuba nearly tied it after a free kick. Spotlight on: Summerville Green Wave Hometown: Summerville, South Carolina Group: SC Class 4A By Ryan Rohde FootballPower Correspondent His name is legendary around the Palmetto state. South Carolina named a day after him in 1977 and Harry Truman was even president when he began his current profession. One might wonder who might warrant such an impressive resume: perhaps a politician, an actor or humanitarian? Actually, it's Summerville (State PR: 65.88, Rank: 21) head football coach John McKissick . 558 wins, 10 state titles, and 30 Regional championships later, McKissick still patrols the sidelines for the Summerville Green Wave. Now embarking in his 57th season at Summerville, McKissick is the winningest football coach at any level. McKissick’s coaching career actually commenced in Clarkton, North Carolina, where he was hired as the head football coach not knowing it was a 6-man program. In reality, he knew very little about 6-man football, so he read a book about it and soon lead his team to a 7-2 record – all while coaching the boys and girls basketball teams and the Baseball squad. Understandably, he only stayed at Clarkton for one year. Then in the summer of 1952, McKissick applied for head coaching position at Summerville. The job was open after the Green Wave won two state titles and the previous coach moved up to the college ranks. McKissick won the job over some highly qualified coaching candidates and clearly, the decision ...

Robbins Park plan approved Town commissioners have approved a long-term plan for the 126-acre Robbins Park that calls for Baseball fields, walking trails, natural areas, picnic shelters and a community garden. Mayor Jeff Tarte called the area flanked by West Catawba Avenue and Westmoreland Road one of the largest remaining open spaces in town, an area “that can be a jewel for our community. This is going to be a spectacular amenity for our community.” The town has worked on a Robbins Park master plan for several years. Commissioners voted unanimously last week to approve a plan that would also leave 7 1/2 acres of lawn along West Catawba Avenue for badminton and volleyball, a playground, and picnic shelters with restrooms. The plan also includes The Preserve at Robbins Park, developer Ray Killian's 131-lot subdivision on which he said work will begin soon. Several residents at last week's town board meeting urged commissioners to approve the plan, including longtime youth Baseball organizer Gene Ervin. “There are many, many tournaments I could bring to this area,” Ervin said. He is Regional coordinator for Pony Baseball. “We could bring many dollars into this town, the hotels, the restaurants,” Ervin said. “We need ballparks at Robbins Park. Let's keep these kids on the ball fields and off the streets.” Commissioner Jim Bensman said approving the plan allows the town to apply for grants to help offset costs of developing the park. ...

Bolton Police Chief Vincent Alfano and Nashoba Regional High School Principal Jeremy Roche want to send a message to students and spectators — drinking at school-sponsored events will not be tolerated. The admonition comes after a student was taken by ambulance to Clinton Hospital last Friday night during the football game between Leominster and Nashoba. According to Alfano, two students approached an officer on bike patrol and said a girl was sleeping in the Baseball dugout. The officer responded and discovered the girl was unconscious. He called for an ambulance and began rendering first aid. Four other police officers and Bolton EMS cadets also responded, followed shortly after by the Bolton Ambulance Department. Alfano said, “There appeared to be alcohol involved.” He stressed that the girl was not drinking at the football game, and in fact, had never even made it to the game. Instead, she had “appeared in the fields.” The girl, who lives with her father in Bolton, is a freshmen at Nashoba. According to reports, she was staying with friends for the weekend. The student has recovered; it is not clear where she got the alcohol. Alfano said that police and school officials have taken a proactive approach to monitoring the football games and last Friday night there were four uniformed detail officers serving as traffic controllers and gate and crowd monitors, along with one uniformed bike patrol officer, two plain-clothes officer ...

Gagg, who returns for his senior year, must sit out the first two games of the 2009 season. Haug is out of eligibility. ...

At halftime of Saturday's UNLV-UNR football game at Sam Boyd Stadium, UNLV will recognize three local little league Baseball games, all of which won their respective Nevada state titles in July. The three teams are: -Spring Valley, who won the District 4 Championship in the 10-year-old division, then beat Washoe County in the state championship game, 8-2, in Pioche, Nev. -Legacy, who won the District 2 Championship in the 11-year-old division, and beat Mountain Ridge 7-1 in its state title tilt in Elko, Nev. -Paseo Verde, maybe the most well-known of the three. The team won the District 2 Championship in the 12-year-old division, then won its two final games at the state tourney in Elko by a combined score of 45-3. The team won five games in the Little League West Regional in San Bernardino, Calif., before falling 4-3 to Hawaii with a berth in the Little League World Series on the line. Coastal Carolina Baseball coach Gary Gilmore knows - especially after witnessing the pitching-rich Tar Heels first hand in the Cary (N.C.) Super Regional - that CCU must win the college Baseball arms race. The Chants are in the midst of fall practice and key objectives include replacing the power bullpen arm of Pete Andrelcyzk, a fifth-round pick of the Florida Marlins, along with finding arms to match up with the Alex Whites and Matt Harveys of the world, UNC ace-caliber pitchers who quieted the CCU bats in Cary. Gilmore believes newcomers Anthony Meo and Brad Goldberg could be those arms. ...

Ray Botelho says he won’t settle for second place anymore. The 35-year old triathlete was nipping at George Bent’s heals at the Hyannis Sprint 1 triathlon in June and again at the Falmouth Sprint Triathlon in July, but couldn’t overcome his archrival. “George Bent is very talented at that one hour sprint race. That’s his specialty. No disrespect to him, but I just feel I should be able to beat him.” The Sandwich resident will have to wait until next year because last Saturday’s Hyannis Sprint II was cancelled due to the weather. Botelho’s specialty is the iron man triathlon, which consists of long distance running, swimming and biking. He won the Plymouth Iron Distance Triathlon Aug. 31. He will compete in the Ford Ironman Florida Triathlon in Panama City Beach Nov. 1. Botelho says competing in Regional sprint triathlons helps him prepare for the ironman competitions. Despite warnings from trainers and coaches, he participates in as many Regional triathlons as he can. “If all I cared about were first-places finishes, I would only race a few times a year. At this point I want to race as much as I can,” Botelho says. “I’m willing to come in 25th and just take it as experience where a lot of people wouldn’t dare do that.” Botelho comes from a long line of athletes. His father and grandfather played football and Baseball in high school and his uncle was drafted by the New York Yankees before an arm injury ended his career. He admits ...

Athletic teams at Dixon High School have created an unusual problem: there are so many victory banners in the school gym that the walls are running out of display space. Athletic Director Tony Brandt told school board members Thursday night that there are only seven spots remaining on the walls where about five dozen banners are displayed for conference, district and state victories. The winning teams include Baseball, softball, girls basketball, boys basketball, track, cross country, soccer, golf and one academic competition banner. The oldest banner dates back to a 1949-1950 victory when the Dixon boys’ basketball team won a Regional and all-conference competition. Brandt presented four different proposals to address the problem, ranging from a joke of building a larger gym with more wall space to removing the 37 all-conference banners and displaying only the higher-level victories. Brandt proposed various options to display the banners in places other than the gym, but said they all suffer from a simple flaw: Many of the older Dixon residents who come to Dixon games like to see the banners on the wall that show their own names from their high school athletic days. Even rotating out the oldest banners when the walls fill up may not work, Brandt cautioned, since some of the people who attend Dixon sporting events were on those winning teams from the 1950s. Confronted with similar space problems, many other Frisco League sports teams ...
