It had been a good road trip to start the 2008 season for the Clarinda (Iowa) A's, who had won three of four in Junction City and Topeka and were on the way home -- eight miles south of St. Joseph, Mo. --when a tire blew on their 1983 bus. You don't travel in luxury when you're a summer Baseball team. You are just thankful, in many cases, you can travel at all. This bus chugged on down the road; but the loud pop the Players and coaches heard on this day was a sign of bad things to come, things they could never have anticipated. After hearing the pop of the tire, some of the Players saw some smoke and sparks coming from underneath the bus. After it had come to a stop, they filed out of the bus, thinking they were in for a 30-minute delay while a wrecker crew changed the tire. The delay was much longer. The sparks had set off a fire beneath the bus, and the small extinguisher that came with the vehicle was no match. The more Clarinda player John Fugazi sprayed, the more intense the flames became. Finally, they engulfed the bus and everything in it -- gloves, bats, equipment, uniforms, laptops, iPods. Everything. ...

Scott Bevan has taught a lot of youngsters the game of Baseball at Extra Innings of Salisbury since it opened up two years ago. As many of them progressed, he thought it was time to get them involved in AAU Baseball, an organization that covets the skillful player who’s committed to the sport. With assistance from general manager Rob Polansky of Beverly, Bevan, a lifelong Danvers resident, created the Tribe comprised of two teams for 13-and 14-year-old Players. Scott’s son, Scott, Jr., coaches the 13-year-old squad, while dad is in charge of the 14-year-old team. Bevan has successfully coached in the Danvers National Little League, and was a volunteer assistant on the Danvers High School Baseball staff. Baseball has always been his passion, and it bothers him when it’s not played correctly. “I always wanted Baseball taught the right way,” said Bevan. “Your better Players play AAU and all the good pitchers pitch AAU. They all have to get tested against the better competition. Some still play Babe Ruth [Baseball], but they learn to prioritize.” Bevan knows he’s entered a brave new world. There are more opportunities to play in AAU. The Babe Ruth League season is short in comparison to AAU that could play up to 64 games in a season. Babe Ruth Baseball runs for two months, not counting all-star tournaments. Tribe’s not alone North Shore Baseball enthusiasts are familiar with the Lightning, an AAU program that has redefined the defini ...

Three Holland-area Baseball Players played in the recent Big League World Series in Easley, S.C. The group who represented District 9 All-Stars from West Michigan included 2008 Holland Christian graduate Alex Beelen, 2007 Holland High School graduate Mark Waterstone and Jeff Victor, a junior at Holland Christian. The District 9 champions qualified for the World Series by going undefeated in regional play. Big League teams features Players age 16 through 18. “We cleaned house on the six teams we played at Pinery Park.” Victor said. “To finish 2-2 (fourth in the country) at the Big League World Series was amazing.” Victor pitched in two of the Central Regional All-Stars games. “I pitched in relief against a Southwest team that we beat,” Victor said. “I started against a West team that beat us.” Victor said it was special to be a teammate of Beelen, who’s headed NAIA Cedarville (Ohio) College on a Baseball scholarship. “Alex is an amazing player,” Victor said. “He’s just a great all-around player, who I love to death.” Victor, 16, was one of his team’s and the tournament’s youngest Players. “Jeff did exceptional for someone his age,” said Mike Ott, Holland Christian’s Baseball coach. “He held his own against some exceptional and older athletes.” “Alex led the World Series in batting,” Ott said of Beelen’s .613 mark. “He did unbelievable.” Beelen went 9 for 14 at the plate including two doubles and four RBIs. “I really had a good time ...

Filed under: MLB Fans , MLB Gossip Walkoff Walk points us toward this MLB.com featur e (which should be your first hint that something went horrible wrong here) about the Arizona Diamondbacks and their, ahem, interesting taste in music. This is apparently a running feature on MLB.com, and boy, is it enlightening. For example, favorite songs include "Swing" by Trace Adkins ( Stephen Drew ), "No Leaf Clover" by Metallica ( Jim Thome ), "These Are My People" by Rodney Atkins ( Chad Tracy ) and so forth. There aren't a whole lot of sophisticated choices in there, but not everyone is an unabashed music snob like yours truly, so that's fine. What's worse than having questionable taste in music is not caring enough about the one song you're asked to think about all year. Take it away, fellas: Drew: "At one point I didn't even come out to any music. For me, I don't really care about it. The other guys were saying they wanted me to have a song, so that's how it works for me. It's country and I like country music, so it's not too bad. I'm a low-key guy. I just go out and play every day and just have fun with the guys." Jackson: "I just like the beat. There's no particular reason. I just heard it and liked it. It's got a little techno beat in it, too. That's how I roll." Thome: "I just kind of roll with it. I'm not an overly big music guy, so whatever they play is fine. No biggie. I don't even really hear it up there. If I would think about ...
