Barry Adamson couldn’t have picked a better song to open his new album, Back to the Cat. The smoky horns, strutting bass line, and lazy piano figures leave us with no doubt as to where we are—in some shady, smoke-filled bar on the edge of town—and when Adamson starts singing, we learn everything we need to know about our narrator. He “woke up this morning with a crazy dream” that the “Earth was a burning ball of fire,” and from there it isn’t long before the Devil and his demons enter the story. By the time the story ends, our guide through the twilit netherworld is rattling off a laundry list of freaks and losers and outcasts—the cast of characters we’re to meet along the way—and he ends the song with an ominous growl: “And now I’m going down.” But is it a final farewell, or an invitation to follow? That, of course, depends on how brave of a listener you care to be. Adamson is nothing if not dramatic, and opening his album this way is intentional—it’s the sound of the door opening just a crack, barely enough for us to peek into the album and see what awaits us in the remaining songs. And it isn’t exactly frivolous fare—it’s an album strewn with broken hearts and shattered dreams, crowded with junkies and drunkards and whores—but as dark as it may sound on paper, it’s a total delight on record. Adamson—formerly the bass player for Magazine, then one of Nick Cave’s Bad Seeds—sounds like he’s drinking from the same creative well as Tom W ...

(Credit: John Gladdy) Being a Bad Seed has rarely been so good. Like some nasty Leonard Cohen alter ego, the veteran bard plays blues-folk as something dark and gruff on "Back to the Cat." The trade of melancholy for something more bitter and less ambiguous is, after all, what rock ... ...

Some good new reasons to belatedly celebrate national record store day. For those who hadn't heard, this past weekend was National Record Store Day, an event put together by independent music retailers, presumably in an effort to draw some traffic back into the stores. The event was marked here at Blogcritics in an article by our own Mark Saleski, which not surprisingly drew some debate in the comments section (by... ...

What a Ennio Morricone movie soundtrack might have sounded like if Isaac Hayes was assigned to score it. It's a CD that might be best enjoyed with a bucket of popcorn and box of Ju Ju beans. That's probably the way Barry Adamson intends for it to be, too. Ever since his first solo album Moss Side Story almost two decades ago, Adamson has parlayed his enthusiasm for classic cinema into nearly every release since. His "soundtracks without movies" have... ...

As the dog days of summer approach — so much faster than we'd like — we have just the thing to slake your thirst. Our interview with Elizabeth Royte ( Bottlemania ) will get you thinking twice about that bottle of water you're about to guzzle and toss away. You'll want to drink up the signed first editions of Gil Adamson's The Outlander . A bevy of original essays from Iain Gately ( Drink: A Cultural History of Alcohol ), William Stolzenberg ( Where the Wild Things Were ), Brunonia Barry ( The Lace Reader ), and Monica Drake ( Clown Girl ) will seem like a shimmering oasis, but this is one you can actually lap up — along with our INK Q&A from Shan Sa ( Alexander and Alestria ). Before you order your next round of drinks from your favorite restaurant, make sure you read the posts from guest blogger The Waiter ( Waiter Rant ) — then chase it with next week's guest, Jonathan Segura ( Occupational Hazards ). And make ours a double. ...
