Wyre proved a popular destination throughout the Bank Holiday weekend with visitor numbers up across the borough. Traders, attractions and the information centres reported a particularly busy three days compared with the same time last year. A number of planned events also helped to attract a high percentage of people to the area, several of whom had travelled from abroad. Fleetwood's half-marathon proved a huge crowd puller on Sunday with hundreds lining the promenade to support the runners, while spectator figures were in the thousands for the annual tractor pull at Great Eccleston, despite a downpour that threatened proceedings on Saturday. Wyre Estuary Country Park in Thornton welcomed 10 per cent more people to the countryside than last year and a similar picture was reported in Garstang where visitor figures on the Sunday were almost three times higher than in 2007. More than 600 people also passed through the doors of Fleetwood's award winning Tourist Information Centre during the three days. There was also good news for businesses in Cleveleys. Cleveleys Traders' Association Chairman Martin Hunns said: "It was a very positive weekend for the town overall with visitor figures up roughly 20 per cent on the same period last year. Sunday and the Bank Holiday Monday were the best days for us, with Victoria Road West packed with shoppers on both those days.
