WASHINGTON - The U.S. Senate has unanimously passed a bill declaring the Soviet occupation of the Baltic states “illegal.” The bill also calls on Russiato acknowledge the occupation, something the state has been unwilling to do since the fall of the Soviet Union. Russiamaintains that it ‘liberated’ the Baltics from the Nazi regime. “The Soviet Union imposed the communist political system on Latvia,Estonia and Lithuaniaand thus oppressed opposing views, free expression of political will and violated basic human rights,” the document said. “The Congress appeals to the U.S. President and the U.S. State Secretary to urge the government of the... ...

For long-term security, the Baltic states must approach the problem not just at the military but at the grand strategic level. What that means is that, like all small countries bordering Great Powers, they must accommodate the Great Power's interests. - William S. Lind Defending the Baltics William S. Lind Antiwar.com USA September 9, 2008 I recently returned from Estonia and the Baltic Defense College, where the Russian counterattack on Georgia had left a residual case of nerves. They have little to fear in the short run, unless they duplicate Georgia's folly and attack Russia. But the question of how the Baltics might be defended is worth considering, both in itself and in terms of what it means for defending other small countries. The worst option, which Georgia took, is to create a toy army. A handful of modern jet fighters, a battalion or two of tanks, and a frigate for the navy all add up to nothing. Against a Great Power, a toy army goes down to defeat in days if not hours. More, even a few modern jet fighters or tanks cost so much there is no money left for a real defense. Unless the Baltic states want to fight each other, they should leave military toys to children. Second, the Baltics could try to ally with other nearby Powers strong enough to balance Russia. But this option exists only in theory. Germany could fill the role but has lost all Great Power ambitions, while Sweden has been out of the game for two centuries. T ...

"The worst option, which Georgia took, is to create a toy army. A handful of modern jet fighters, a battalion or two of tanks, a frigate for the navy, all add up to nothing. Against a Great Power, a toy army goes down to defeat in days if not hours." Bill Lind Situation: The Russian invasion of Georgia has sent shock waves through the Baltics. Are they next? Question: How can the Baltics defend themselves against Russia? Answer: Make it prohibitively expensive for Gazprom. Expanded Answer: Small teams that can make deep strikes on Gazprom's pipelines -- from Russia to Ukraine to Central Asia. Small teams of hackers (Estonia has many) that can break Gazprom systems (from electricity to pipelines to corporate records to executive data). Objectives: Drive down Gazprom's stock price. Anger Gazprom's customers. GENERAL NOTE: A key objective for any global insurgency (or micropower defensive operations) will be to target corporations, since they are within the target scale for most global guerrilla groups (or micropowers) and damage to them creates extensive network effects. Operations should be focused on specific corporations, in turn -- with the intent of damaging that specific company's business network, hierarchy, supply chain, etc. as quickly as possible. ...
