Madison - Bret Bielema secured his fourth in-state commitment Thursday. Travis Frederick, a 6-foot-5, 310-pound offensive lineman from Walworth Big Foot, has given the University of Wisconsin football program an oral commitment, Big Foot coach Rodney Wedig said. "He made up his mind this morning," Wedig said. "He was offered on Tuesday, then we went up there yesterday and met the staff and everybody and got the whole tour. We talked with the academic advisors and we were pretty impressed with it." The Badgers have four known in-state commitments. All of them are linemen: Middleton's Ryan Groy plays offense and Homestead's Shelby Harris and Waupun's Jordan Kohout play defense. Wedig said the Badgers project Frederick as an interior lineman. For Big Foot, he played at every spot on the line last season and earned first-team all-state recognition from the state coaches association - he was also honorable mention as a defensive lineman. Big Foot went 10-1 last season and reached the second round of the Division 4 playoffs. "When Coach Bielema and (offensive line) coach (Bob) Bostad were talking to him yesterday they were straightforward and said he's the type of Wisconsin lineman they're looking for - he's strong, a great run blocker. "He probably wouldn't have fit well with a spread-type offense where you're a little more in space so they plan to use him on the interior." Frederick, who carries a 4.1 grade-point average and ranks se ...

Madison - Montee Ball, a 5-foot-11, 205-pound tailback from Timberland High School in Wentzville, Mo. committed to the the University of Wisconsin football team Sunday night. According to Craig Collins, Timberland's high school coach, Ball chose Wisconsin over Missouri and Kansas although he had offers from nine schools in all. That list included Stanford, Iowa State, Northwestern and Indiana. What sold Ball on the Badgers was their offense, which is the same one run by Timberland, a school located in the St. Louis area. He has thrived in that attack, rushing for about 1,800 yards as a sophomore and 3,077 more as a junior. Ball averaged 29 carries per game last season "He's very durable," Collins said. "He just wears on you for four quarters." Ball combines his punishing style with 4.4 speed in the 40-yard dash. In Collins' estimation that speed is what made Ball more productive as a junior. "He improved his hamstring strength and dedicated his spring to working one on one with a personal trainer and doing a lot of work to lengthen his stride," Collins said. "He was always fast but gained a step that turned him from a good running back to elite prosect." Collins said that Ball carries a 3.5 grade-point average and though quiet by nature is a leader by example. "He's a very good student. Grades are important to him," Collins said. "He comes from a supportive family. He's a very driven individual. He's been a leader on the team sin ...

Madison - The Wisconsin Badgers got their latest known recruit from right under the noses of the Minnesota Gophers. Casey Dehn, a 6-foot-6, 266-pound offensive lineman from Owatonna, Minn, recently gave the Badgers an oral commitment, Owatonna coach Jeff Williams said. "He had gone up to the Minnesota camp the week before and was offered by Minnesota and basically told them that he wanted to go to the Wisconsin camp the following week and see what his options were," Williams said. "And so he chose not to commit with the Gophers and I think was very pleased with the situation at Wisconsin and very pleased with the staff and facilities." Owatonna is about 60 miles south of Minneapolis, but Dehn's (pronounced dean) ties to Wisconsin are strong. His father lives in the state and his brother and sister are track athletes for the Badgers. Robert, who was a freshman this past season, and Samantha, who was a redshirt sophomore, each competed in the throws. As an offensive lineman, Dehn is light compared to the linemen the Badgers usually recruit, though he is still growing into his body. He was listed as 243 pounds on Owatonna's roster last season, 23 pounds lighter than his current weight. Dehn, who also plays on the defensive line, comes with impressive credentials. As a wrestler, he reached the quarterfinals of the Minnesota state tournament as a heavyweight. In track, he won the state's shot put title with a toss of 62 feet 5½ inches ...

It seems there won't be a cull of Badgers in England - despite farmers being worried they spread TB to cattle . Is that the right decision? Hi 5live In 2003 i lost 106 of my pedigree cows with TB! Just prior to me loosing my cows, i found NUMEROUS dead&dying Badgers on my farm! I have so much evidence that the sick Badgers were passing on this disease to my cows! Also from an animal loving person,it is distressing watching how hard a death a badger has, when its infected. We MUST cull Badgers in TB 'Hotspots'! Both to save MY cows, &to protect the healthy badger population! Andy near Belfast The decision on the badger cull blows Gordon's boast about taking tough decisions out of the water. New Labour, No Guts! Roy(BEDS). Badgers - A small, strident lobby has triumphed and the whole country is the loser. There are twenty new cases of bovine TB a day. The Government has been badgered and cowed. Mike, Devon Evidence does not support that cattle catch TB from Badgers, but that Badgers may catch TB from cattle. A badger cull makes no sense. Steve, Sheffield Re badger culling decision : yet another example of the vociferous minority winning thru, how sad bet no cull is cheaper too! Neil on Hogs Back ...

Maybe the GOP can rebook its convention for Cleveland. Quinnipiac is out with a series of polls in four swing states: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Colorado. Obama holds the lead in each one. In Minnesota, that lead is 17 points; in Wisconsin, 13 points; in Michigan, 6 points, and in Colorado 5. Obviously, these are not the numbers that John McCain wants to see. But there's bad news and there's not-so-bad news for him here. The bad news in Wisconsin and particularly Minnesota, where Obama has shown a double-digit lead in multiple recent polls. Wisconsin has been extremely competitive in the past couple cycles, as has Minnesota to a lesser degree. But Barack Obama might not be the right Democrat against whom to put those states into play. For one thing, he's from the region, and for another, he tends to do well with white voters of mainline Protestant stock like the Lutherans found commonly in the Upper Midwest. As Sean pointed out last week , the Republicans have somewhat frequently held their convention in non-competitive states -- New York City in 2004 being the most obvious example -- but Minnesota was clearly intended to be symbolic of an expanded red map, and one now has to wonder whether John McCain will waste resources there to make a good show when his opportunities lie elsewhere. The not-so-bad news is in Colorado and Michigan. Yes, McCain trails there, but by the same 5-6 point margin that Obama leads in national ...
